[ More reasons for Emma to want to hit Jefferson? Is it Christmas already? ]

[Well it's not like she has an ex he has to face all of the time or anything.]

I'm not sure we really want to try in there.

[ He doesn't mind this sleuthing business, he really doesn't. It makes absolute sense in fact. Both he and Emma are skilled at tracking down objects of value...where hers tended to be people and his tended to be magical objects, but the point remained. They were a natural pair when it came to tracking down a missing prince for a friend of the kingdom, and when she asked he'd been more than happy to assist in following the trail with her.

But Jefferson recognized this village, a little too well. Memories of his indiscretions as a young man came flooding back and oh, this had the potential to get very awkward very quickly. Particularly when they were currently sizing up the town pub, gathering place of all the sort of people he would have been formerly acquainted with. As a result, he looks mildly disconcerted, fingers twitching before he stuffs them into his pockets. ]

No telling how reliable the drinking crowd's going to be at this point in the evening, you know?

[ It's a weak effort at best. Who knows? Maybe he's been forgotten around this part of the realm. A guy can hope, right? ]

[She just never knows with him.

After a day of searching, traveling, and generally exhausting themselves to find their missing prince, Emma had expected Jefferson to be all for getting a drink while they questioned some of the villagers. She knows this isn't an ideal situation; being away from Henry and Grace makes them both irritable, but given some of the places they've been to lately, this isn't so bad. It's as good a place as any to spend a night and collect information.

So what the hell is with the hesitation?]

Oh come on. You know as well as I do that people are a little more honest with a few drinks in them.

[Unreliable? It's the people here he thinks are unreliable, and not her suddenly uncertain partner? She rests her hands on her hips and taps her foot against the ground, giving him all of five seconds to come up with a more legit reason for them to move on. Better ideas, she can work with. He knows the area better than she does, there's no denying that.

The thing is, they aren't learning anything by keeping to themselves.]

Unless you have some other reason to not want to go in there.

[Not a question, not an accusation, just an idea that she's throwing out there. But now his time is up, and she cocks her head in the direction of the entrance before starting for it.]

No, I just...

[ But Emma's already headed for the door, in one of her more headstrong moods. Jefferson had all but reached to stop her, and now he's left staring after her empty-handed, balling up his fists and biting the inside of his cheek. Well, maybe it won't be so bad. Maybe they'll get lucky.

For the first time in the history of ever. Right. Taking a deep breath, he follows after her. Letting her lead is actually probably the smartest move he could make.

The inside of the tavern is a cozy affair, wooden walls and floors and a roaring fire in the hearth, with a lush selection of the village folk piled up inside helping themselves to ale, mead, and beer. The bartender eyeballs them just as soon as they walk through the door, shrewd eyes taking in Emma first. The woman doesn't appear unfriendly, but she's certainly sizing her up.

Jefferson, for his part, remains just behind Emma, turning about to get a look at the patrons. Mostly he's hoping the bartender doesn't look too closely in his direction. ]

[Letting her lead? Emma takes charge all on her own, giving him plenty of time to turn and run if he's going to back down now. His reasons don't matter to her, although she's sure he has them. Jefferson doesn't have to like anyone here as long as he can get them to answer a few questions anyway.

Or she'll do it, since he's trailing.

His hesitation has her picking up the pace, meeting the bartender's gaze with a nod to the woman before she starts to move through the crowd. She could use the drink, sure, though she could also use some rest. The sooner they check this place out, the sooner they can finish up for the night.

It's not that bad, is it?

She's used to being stared at, so maybe that's why it doesn't register right away. She's the daughter of Snow White and Prince Charming, and that tends to mean something now. She hasn't even come close to settling into those responsibilities, but she understands the curiosity.

Her life is strange, even for this world.

Then she approaches the woman, and finally realizes she's staring at Jefferson, not her.

What the hell?]

[ Oh, he's trying to avoid that stare. It doesn't last long, especially when she calls him out by name. There's a flittering gaze before he manages a sheepish grin, eyebrows perking. ]

Molly. It's...been a while, hasn't it?

[ He quickly tucks his hands into his pockets, shoulders slouched. It's the posture of a man caught, and the bartender just shakes her head at him. Thought he'd never have the nerve to show his face in this village again, she says, but not unfondly. The hatter's grin crooks a little higher at that. ]

On a mission for the royal family. Important business.

[ There's a bark of laughter as Molly's eyes graze over Emma. So, she says with an almost pitying look. Still content to leave a trail of broken hearts behind? Jefferson looks distinctly uncomfortable. ]

It's not like that.

[So they know each other. Emma knows she shouldn't be surprised, and she wouldn't be - if he had warned her before they walked in instead of making up some bullshit excuse about the pub crowd. It's with that in mind that she shoots a dagger in his direction, and she knows he misses it because his eyes don't leave the bartender's.

It's an interesting story, obviously. She's just trying to decide if it's one she wants to hear.]

And we're looking for someone.

[She's not about to spill the details of their relationship to a stranger when most of the time she avoids discussing him with her own family. Her hand slips into her satchel and she unfolds a sketch of their missing prince to show it to the woman.]

He hasn't been in, has he?

[Whatever happened here, Emma's trying not to let it distract her from what they came in for. And yet she's already tense, and it only takes a quick look around to realize the woman they're talking to isn't the only one watching them. She also knows that there's no way the two of them are done catching up.

Turns out he hasn't been in; she's never seen the man before. Which is true, if Emma's ability is working tonight.

At least there's alcohol.]

[ Jefferson's already looking like he wants to do nothing more than end the conversation and bolt. But Molly turns to one of the serving girls with a smirk and jerks her head in his direction.

The girl's reaction is much different. Her eyes grow wide and she bounds closer with an excited grin, close to wiggling like an excited puppy. Jefferson grins wider, almost a grimace, and he shoots a panicked look to Emma. Can we go now? ]

Ah, it's...very nice to see you again, B--

[ He struggles for a minute, before she supplies her name eagerly. Bridget. Right. He knew that, he swears he did. She looks pleased regardless of the slip up, supplying that she just knew he'd be back one day.

It's then that she gets a look at Emma and pauses, obviously puzzled. Jefferson seizes the opportunity. ]

We'd stay, but we've got this. Um. Quest. For the kingdom, very urgent. We really should be going.

[ He damn near flinches when he hears another voice chime in from somewhere else in the tavern. God on high, deliver him. He's never going to hear the end of this, if the look on Emma's face is any indication. ]

[So that's one. The squeal in the corner, that's two. And she turns back to watch that woman make her way over when she notices another practically fall off of her stool in surprise. Three.

There's a right way to handle this and a wrong one. Emma knows he wants to leave. He looks more than a little uncomfortable at all of the attention he's getting here from the women who missed him.

Seems only fair that her reaction is to grab the first open seat and order herself a beer.]

I'll let you catch up.

[It's not jealousy, not exactly. She's amused as hell, that can't be denied. But if she's thinking about what a scared guy does when he has to make a run for it, she's guessing the people he asks for help aren't fellow men. Maybe she can talk to some of these women while the rest of them talk to Jefferson.

They seem to want an explanation out of him, while Emma bites down on her lower lip to keep from pointing out that at this point, an explanation really shouldn't be needed.

She feels for him, she does.

Just not enough to help.]

Emma.

[ But despite his desperate hiss, it looks like she's settling in, and he's on his own. Resigning himself to his fate he lets himself get carted off to a back table by the two girls, who seem very adamant that he tell them everything he's been up to since they last saw him.

Molly just shakes her head, pouring Emma her beer and sliding it in front of her. There's a look given to the blonde, too, because if she's traveling with Jefferson then the woman already has her suspicions as to why. She mentions off-hand that it's a good thing the other girls have already gone and gotten themselves married, or he might be dealing with a mob. ]

[She offers a quick thanks for the beer, which is followed by a long drink. He has more reasons to knock them back than she does, but she still chugs enough of it to come off as anything but a princess. They're pretty, those women, even if they aren't too quick on the uptake.]

How many - you know what, nevermind.

[It doesn't matter. She made her share of bad choices in the name of fun. Empty one-night stands aren't a big deal if both parties are having a good time. Although given the way they're talking over there...

Maybe she should amend that to all three parties.]

Jefferson's changed, they're not talking to the same guy.

[Although the more she watches, the more she starts to remember the teenager who stole a looking glass with her.]

The love 'em and leave 'em thing isn't who he is now.

[ Of course, Molly replies, in the most skeptical of tones. She has good reason for it, considering both girls are draping themselves over Jefferson as much as they can, one girl pressing a hand to his chest, and both apparently enraptured by whatever he happens to be telling them.

It's the one trick she knows best, working a job like this, she adds. The part of the wounded scoundrel in search of redemption. He promises adventure and maybe even a sliver of his soul to save, and just like that he's got them in the palm of his hand. Even had her feeding him a few free meals out of pity, though she can't bring herself to regret it now. He's not a bad man, she admits. Were she younger, she might have gone with him herself.

There's a careless shrug and she sets about wiping down the counter, while one of the girls nudges a tankard full of mead into the hatter's hands. He still looks a little uncomfortable, but he seems to have fallen into the rhythm of a story. He doesn't even seem to care that one girl is resting her head on his shoulder. ]

[Emma waits for him to push her off, expecting him to do so immediately, and turning away when it doesn't happen at all. He's not looking her way, so he won't notice the clenched fist or the way her eyes narrow as she sets her mind to taking care of what she came in for.

She pays for her beer and turns to the couple beside her, showing them the sketch, and then the friend who comes up to talk to them. She's a young girl, especially for this crowd, and looks hesitant to say much of anything.

It takes Emma a few minutes to get her to talk, and all the while she can't help but look back and forth, waiting for that moment when Jefferson realizes that there is already a woman who is practically in his lap and another who seems to want to be.

She takes down all of the information the girl has to offer and finds herself finishing her beer more quickly than expected.

Palm of his hand, huh? Bartender or not, can't this woman go away?]

He's going to kill me for this. He's not exactly enjoying himself.

[Not...exactly.]

[ Oh isn't he? she replies, and says no more about it.

To his credit, Jefferson does finally seem to be trying to pry himself free of the girls, who look sorely disappointed. He'll come back, won't he?

And he feels worse for him now than he necessarily might have before. Maybe because he knows what being left alone feels like, or maybe he's grown a conscience. It's not enough to have him doing anything but assuring them that he might swing back by, all the while edging towards the door.

He pauses just long enough to toss a look at Emma, eyebrows raised. If she's got what she needs, they should leave. Now. ]

[He isn't. Even if she doesn't look all that pleased when he finally remembers she's there. It's time to leave, so she nods to the woman and picks up her satchel, securing it shut before she starts for the door.

He should have warned her about this. It all could have been avoided, so it's his own fault. And what the hell was with all of the flirting? Because as far as she's concerned it didn't just get thrown at him, he was an active part of it.

She gets to him, alright, and promptly walks past him without a word, her hands shoved into her pockets.

Wounded scoundrel? From where she's standing he looks like a jackass.]

[ And here it comes. Gritting his teeth he picks up the pace to catch up to her, letting the door swing shut behind him. ]

Did you find anything useful?

[ Stick to the topic of what they were out here to do, because everything else at this point is dangerous territory. He can tell from the set of her shoulders and the acid she looks like to spit at any given moment.

But heaven knows he doesn't know better than to leave well enough alone. ]

Yes.

[That's all he gets, even if he was expecting a lead on the prince to save him from her anger. Emma hates feeling like this almost as much as she hates knowing that her feelings for him are what make the anger possible.

She had to go and fall in love with the son of a bitch, and this is what she gets for it.

The path in front of them looks more interesting than giving him any additional attention as she starts back the way they came, ready to call it a night and possibly put some space between them. She hasn't opted to spend a night without him in a long time, but tonight?

Tonight she's thinking space. And that's at least slightly better than those passing thoughts of violence.]

Emma, don't...

[ Space is the last thing on his mind, even if it's the best possible idea at the moment. Instead he leans in, a hand going to her arm with an exasperated sound. ]

I should have told you, alright? I know it.

[ But there's a part of him that's indignant. She went into the pub when she knew he didn't want to. She left him to those girls without any sort of help. Now she's decided to be cross with him about it? ]

[His hand doesn't stay there long, because she shoves him off, hard. If he doesn't give her space, he may end up with a black eye. She's in that kind of place right now.]

You should've done a lot of things.

[Like pointed out that he had someone he cared about, or asked them to keep their hands to themselves. Instead he took it all in, left her to question everyone else, and took a trip down memory lane.

Good for him.

Don't mind if she picks up the pace a little.]

And you know what you should do tomorrow? Head back for the palace. I've got this.

[ Apparently he hasn't gotten the hint, because he just picks up speed himself to keep up alongside her, his brow furrowing heavily. ]

Nobody knows the backroads of this part of the kingdom better than I do, and you know it.

And I don't care, Jefferson. Go home.

[Because chasing someone down alone is better than feeling like this. So she stops, and she glares and he might want to back away because she looks to be one wrong word away from something else.]

I don't need you here, and after that, I can't say I want you here, either.

Because of those girls, right?

[ She can glare all she likes. Former flames might give him pause, but he's done nothing wrong, other than not mention specifics. And why would he, if this is how she's going to react to it?

His jaw works tightly. ]

Because you didn't seem so concerned with them when they were dragging me off, I noticed.

And I was supposed to what, pull a weapon on them? You're an adult, you're supposed to be able to handle yourself.

[Wasn't it his job to say no if he didn't want to go with them? Or at the very least, to question them the same as she had spoken to people around her. Isn't he the one whose life has changed drastically since he last met those women?

And you'd never know it if you had watched him. He slipped right back into the old routine.]

You just let them handle you.

[Physically, which is what really has her blood boiling.

If she had ever pulled that with Neal, or Hook, she would have never heard the end of it.]

[ And he has the sense to cut himself off. 'Just girls' doesn't count as an excuse, not knowing the women he knows. A hand rises to pinch the bridge of his nose, his lips thinning. ]

I felt guilty, alright? The way I left this place the last time...I felt bad. I didn't want to just brush them off. Besides, I had to ask them if they'd seen our missing prince.

[ He gestured vaguely at the satchel. ]
