[ She isn't on her own for very long, however.

About fifteen minutes pass, and then there are hesitant footsteps. The two girls from the inn, one carrying a lantern aloft to see in the dying light, are making their way down to the lake's edge. One of them has a blanket and pillow under her arm. ]

[sheriffing]

[She lifts an eyebrow to the sound and slides her hand down reach for a weapon, but the sight of the two women causes her to settle some. No, she didn't want to see them again, but it's better than Jefferson.

So he sent them, so what? She stands and dusts herself off.]

Hey.

[hattergonnahat]

[ One glances at the other, then both stare at her like they're trying to figure her out. Then one smiles in almost a resigned fashion, offering up the bedding. The nights get cold, she explains, and Jefferson wanted to make certain that she didn't grow too cold.

The other girl blurts out an apology, and both of them look extremely awkward about the whole thing. They didn't know she was his lover, how foolish they must have appeared. The smiling girl appears to be doing a better job of masking her disappointment, but neither girl appears terribly heartbroken. ]

[sheriffing]

[And why would they be, if they were running around with Jefferson?

The smartass response comes to her first, and she's tempted to comment that she won't be his anything if he keeps this up. Instead she takes the blanket and nods, forcing a smile of her own.]

It was a misunderstanding, I get it. Thanks...for this.

[So he explained. Is it wrong that she's a little annoyed at how quickly she's going to have to forgive him?

She says good night to the girls and starts to unfold the blanket so that she can settle in for the night. She didn't need it, but it's useful. He's trying.

Good enough for her.]

[ He doesn't venture down until about halfway through the night. He could have stayed in the inn, sure, and Molly would have let him. For old time's sake.

But he doesn't need the old times, as nice as they can be to remember at times. He's got a new life, a fresh start. He just has to make sure he doesn't screw it up and lose it all all over again.

He doesn't want them any further apart than they have to be.

So when Emma wakes, she's going to find him some distance away, leaning against a tree and dozing. ]

[sheriffing]

[Damn him for ruining her plans of staying angry.

She doesn't fall into nearly as restful a sleep without him; something else she would like to blame him for, but she is still asleep when he returns. It's nearly sunrise when Emma wakes, gets up to stretch, and finds her hatter nearby.

What the hell is she going to do with him?

She finds herself deciding to give it a little more time before starting the day , and sits on the ground beside him, eventually leaning close. Then it's her head on his shoulder and she sighs and closes her eyes again. It's a lot better like this, even if she was trying to make a point.

No one should be able to do this except her.]

[ There's a subtle upwards twitch of his lips, and maybe he's not completely asleep after all. But she doesn't need to know that.

He's content to sit here like this a while longer and know he's made his point, forsaking the comfort of the inn to come be with her after making things perfectly clear with his little fanclub back there. They both come with their pasts and their fair share of baggage, but he wouldn't trade the life he had for this one. Not for a second.

The birds grow louder as the sun starts to rise further into the sky, until even he can pretend no longer to be getting any kind of sleep. One eye cracks open to peer down at Emma, before he turns his head to kiss the crown of hers. ]

[sheriffing]

[So what if she knew he wasn't entirely asleep, she couldn't drift back either. When she feels his lips warm the top of her head she smirks, because it doesn't make sense for either one of them to be mad anymore. Emma isn't bothered by his past, but seeing it nudge into what they have now wasn't exactly a great moment for her. It took her twenty-eight years to find a family of her own, and she holds tight to anything that's meant to be hers.

She always has, honestly. Just look at her baby blanket and the few pieces of jewelry she owns. And of course it's worse when it's someone instead of something. She can't help herself.]

Next time there'll be bruises.

[It's an empty threat, and she reaches for his hand to brush her fingertips against his knuckles. She should move, they should head out of town.

If they never see this place again, that'll be fine with her.]

[hattergonnahat]

Next time I better have earned it.

[ He snorts quietly, attention caught by the trace of her fingers. It's easy for him to loose focus or become a little too twitchy, but there's a certain calm being with her brings. Grace seems to have the same effect. Maybe it's family, or being well removed from his collection of hats, which honestly speaking having been doing him many favors. ]

...that's not who I am. Not anymore.

[ His free hand lifts to comb her hair back over her shoulder, an excuse to let his touch linger on her, too. They're both bad about letting go...likely owing to a life of needing to. She's right in thinking that if their roles had been reversed he'd have been just as unhappy, and likely a good deal less reasonable.

Luckily, the mood seems to have passed. ]

[sheriffing]

That's what I said.

[Maybe not in those exact words, but his friend the bartender was having none of it. Not many people know him like he does, it's not really their fault.]

You know, at first.

[Until her insecurities got the better of her. Oh well, she's only human.]

Have a little faith. I'm a weak creature, but I'm not stupid.

[ All evidence to the contrary. He chuckles quietly, nosing against the soft gathering of blond hair atop her head, pleased to have things back to some semblance of order again. ]

I know when I've got a good thing.

[sheriffing]

It's the castle, isn't it? And the title.

[It's neither of those things and they both know it. She gives his hand a little squeeze, threading their fingers together.]

Put some time in to turn a lost princess into a ruling one and reap the benefits later on. You're the Dimitri to my Anastasia.

If that makes Regina Rasputin, I am entirely in favor of this comparison.

[ Turns out that peripheral knowledge of common pop culture references comes in handy, sometimes. His nose wrinkles faintly as he tips his head back, watching sunlight streak across the sky. ]

But right now missing princes are all the rage. We better get moving, if you've got some kind of lead from last night.

[ Hopefully that's the only part of last night they'll be taking along with them. ]

[sheriffing]

I do, and none of it is good. I think he needs to find Maleficent.

[Which means they need to find him before he gets himself killed. she slips out of his grasp and reluctantly pushes herself to her feet with a little grumble, stretching her arms out above her head.]

So finding his ass has now been upgraded to saving his ass.

[Nothing they can't handle, right?]

Last chance to head home and leave me to it.

[hattergonnahat]

[ His grin stretches wide and toothy, eyebrows arched. ]

And let you have all the fun?

[ There's a certain level of him that wants to, but he's trying to work past that. Grace is safer than she's ever been, and while she'll never admit to needing help for anything it doesn't hurt for him to be nearby, just in case.

Unless of course he gets beset by girls at the next village they stop at. In which case it'll probably hurt a lot, owing to whatever Emma decides to thrown at him. ]

[sheriffing]

Fine, I'm keeping you.

[She means that, possibly beyond this little adventure of theirs. It's not always easy, but neither of them would choose the route that was. They both have a tendency to do things the hard way, and if there's any way to explain Jefferson not telling her about the women in advance, it's with that. Giving her warning would have been too much to ask.

She dusts herself off before collecting her things, looking at the path ahead with a touch of longing in her eyes. He has to want to go back, she does, too. He'll get some credit for sticking around to see it through.

...She'll just never tell him about it.]
