1 ♜ manipulation

01. Mind games. You're messing with this person's head, using whatever you know about them to your advantage. Words are barbs, and everyone has a weakness.
02. Stay close to me. You're not letting this person out of your sight. And you don't care what extreme measures you have to go to in order to do it.
03. Blackmail. You know something and you're not afraid to use it against them. Now they have to do what you want.
04. Love makes you do things. It's because you love them that you're making them do this. If they truly loved you, wouldn't they do as you say?
05. For your own good. It doesn't matter what the other person wants. You know what's best, and you're going to force it on them whether they like it or not.
06. Break you down. You're going to make the other person think they're worthless. Crush their self-esteem, break them until they're entirely helpless.
07. Betrayal. You made a promise, and you broke it. Or perhaps you betrayed this person's trust. It's all part of gaining the upper hand.
08. Lies, lies, lies. Fool the other person with words and you'll have them wrapped around your finger in no time.
09. Sob story. A little bit of emotional manipulation never hurt anyone, right? You're going to use this person's feelings for you against them. Make them feel sorry!
10. In your debt. Look, you saved them. The other person wouldn't be here without you. They should show some gratitude.

12. Turn up the charm. There's nothing like a bit of good old-fashioned flirting to get someone eating out of your hand.

[He shakes his head vehemently. This, she must understand.]

No. No. It is because of the time we have spent together that, against my wishes, I have found myself starting to care for you. My silence thus far has been a burden. It has grown heavier day by day ever since we met.

I can withhold the truth, have hidden my true face from you for too long, Katerina... But what I see in you - that is no lie.

[In this moment she is still so confused that she cannot understand. There are parts of what he is saying that she likes to hear, but every time she feels as though it is something she can cling onto and believe, the flash of his true face emerges and she is confused once more.]

The others do not know you are telling me this. [It is starting to click together for her.]

[The rest lies unspoken in his eyes: they cannot know. His hold on her has loosened; he glances up as though looking out for Klaus and the others. Klaus will return, that is certain.]

What am I to do? [She does not want to die, nor does she feel safe right now, but she is trying to come to terms with all of this. She has not looked at him, nor met his gaze since the last time she did and now she fears what she will see in his eyes.]

You must go on as you have. Pretend that you know nothing. Klaus is wary; he will sense any change in your behaviour.

[He is gazing directly at her, hoping that she will look back at him. His face is normal, no trace of his true nature visible in his eyes, except perhaps the age of many years more than a man's natural lifespan.]

I am unsure I will be able to pretend under such pretenses.

[She swallows thickly, the worry beginning to consume her. How could she pretend as though she does not know this grand of a secret? To know that she is there merely to be killed, it is something she had not considered at all.

She exhales a soft breath, glancing up at him finally. Her hand reaches for his cheek, a thumb brushing over where she had once seen the darkness of veins.]

How is it possible for you to have such a thing within you, when all I wish to see is this man before me?

[He becomes very still, simply watching her. He knows how difficult this will be for her. Slowly, he brings his hand up to rest atop hers.]

This is who I am.

[He says it with acceptance, not regret; he's long since got over being turned.]

[Her brow furrows with thought, watching his eyes for another moment before she speaks.]

Show me. [She does not move her hand from its position, simply a soft request made between the two of them.]

[It's easy to grant her wish. His gaze flicks to her throat, as he imagines tearing into her delicate neck, tasting her blood... Klaus has not allowed any of them to taste the doppelganger's blood, even if he had wanted to; she is too precious to risk.

When he looks at her again, the veins have spread around his eyes, dark with desire.]

[She watches with curiosity, sensing where his line of sight flickers to, feeling her heart clench slightly with fear, but trying to ease it as best she can. When he meets her gaze again, she tries not to look away, to meet him in this. Her thumb brushes over the darkened veins, feeling how they raise from the surface. She is unsure how it works, and is unsure if she even wishes to know. She sees the darkness in his eyes, the way they could indeed cause her to run from him if she was not still torn on her level of trust with him.]

Does it hurt?

[He holds still, but his body is tense; he's poised just on the edge of control.]

[The opposite, in fact; he was made to hurt others, to rip out throats and spill blood.]

[She watches him carefully for a moment longer before withdrawing her hands and taking a step away from him.]

When Niklaus returned, he claimed there had been a fight. But there had been no fight, the blood was not his own but it was that of someone he killed. [She glances up at him again.]

That is what they are doing now. Is it not?

[His face returns to normal once again as he quells the blood lust. It's easier to regard her matter-of-factly when she isn't quite so close. He nods.]

The hunt. That is what we are: predators. And people are our prey. We must drink blood to survive.

[She nods, but there is still denial trapped in her heart.]

I do not want to believe it to be true.

Believe your own eyes. I could rip your throat out without blinking.

[He knows it's harsh, but she needs to know the reality of the situation. He came here to tell her the truth.]

[Her hand reaches for her throat, an instinct to protect herself.]

Would you?

Never. I mean what I say. Even if you were not needed for the sacrifice, I wouldn't.

[Her hand drops and she takes that step back toward him, her hand reaches for his and she takes it gently.]

Then I trust you to keep me safe.

[Needless to say, this means an immense amount to him. Elijah squeezes her hand, his face solemn as he makes her a promise:]

You won't regret it.

And when my life has been saved? What will become of me?

I will take you wherever you wish. As far away from Klaus as possible.

And what of you? [Her worry now shifts onto him and what might become of him for disobeying his brother.]

[He smiles wryly.] I'll survive.

I am not sure I approve of this plan. [More worry.]

[He almost can't believe it.] Are you concerned for me?
