How to play

1 ♜ manipulation

01. Mind games. You're messing with this person's head, using whatever you know about them to your advantage. Words are barbs, and everyone has a weakness.
02. Stay close to me. You're not letting this person out of your sight. And you don't care what extreme measures you have to go to in order to do it.
03. Blackmail. You know something and you're not afraid to use it against them. Now they have to do what you want.
04. Love makes you do things. It's because you love them that you're making them do this. If they truly loved you, wouldn't they do as you say?
05. For your own good. It doesn't matter what the other person wants. You know what's best, and you're going to force it on them whether they like it or not.
06. Break you down. You're going to make the other person think they're worthless. Crush their self-esteem, break them until they're entirely helpless.
07. Betrayal. You made a promise, and you broke it. Or perhaps you betrayed this person's trust. It's all part of gaining the upper hand.
08. Lies, lies, lies. Fool the other person with words and you'll have them wrapped around your finger in no time.
09. Sob story. A little bit of emotional manipulation never hurt anyone, right? You're going to use this person's feelings for you against them. Make them feel sorry!
10. In your debt. Look, you saved them. The other person wouldn't be here without you. They should show some gratitude.
11. I need you. You're depending on the other person to do as you say. They're the only one who can help.
12. Turn up the charm. There's nothing like a bit of good old-fashioned flirting to get someone eating out of your hand.
13. Negotiating. There's a bargain to be struck, if only you can find the right words – and the right leverage.
14. For my sake. Why should they do as you say? Because you're the one asking.
15. The truth. It's the thing that hurts most of all.

01. Pretty little puppet. You can command this person at will. They're a plaything, to do with as you please.

06. Cornered. Finally, you've got them alone. This is the moment you've been waiting for – and perhaps the moment they've been dreading.
07. Turning the tables. They thought they'd won, but here's your chance! Maybe it's time to give them a taste of their own medicine, or maybe you have a new trick up your sleeve.
08. Punishment. The other person has done something wrong, or maybe just something you don't like. Now you're going to punish them.
09. Back and forth. I have a laser gun! Well, I have a lightsaber! Whatever it is, you're closely matched and trying to outdo each other.

11. Call my bluff. You're making claims you can't back up. Can you bluff your way out of this, or will the other person catch on?
12. Time to pay. The other person owes you, and it's time for them to pay up.
13. Show of dominance. You're not actually going to hurt this person. You're just going to show them that you could.
14. The most precious thing. Whatever is most important to the other person, you're going to take it away. Because you can.
15. Consequences. You warned them. They failed, and now they're going to pay the price.
16. Your choice. Combine any of the above scenarios or choose your own! It's up to you.

[He smiles wryly.] I'll survive.

I am not sure I approve of this plan. [More worry.]

[He almost can't believe it.] Are you concerned for me?

You speak as though you were the only one that harbored feelings for the other. My concern for you does not lessen with the truth. If anything, you would understand why it would become more.

[He nods, dropping his eyes before looking at her again.] My apologies. The risk you take is much greater than mine.

No greater a risk than the loss I might suffer if something should come of you.

I am a vampire. We are difficult to kill, and my family more so than any others.

[He sighs.] You won't lose me, Katerina. I will do all I can to ensure that the same is true of you.

[She frowns at the sigh.]

You mistake the nature of my concern.

What do you mean?

[How does one... explain not wishing to be with the brother that they are intended for?]

With your words, the truth you have given me I could have run from this place. Left before there was even a chance for anything to happen to me. Yet, I stay and I put my trust in you.

[She glances up at him.]

Do you not see why I would be willing to do that?

[He thinks he does. He pauses, letting go of her hand. He didn't want to care for her. Already he risks losing her; he cannot commit to anything more than that.]

Tell me what it is you want. If I have the power to give it to you, I will.

[Oh. That does not feel right at all.]

I believe I do not wish this discussion to continue.

[There's a moment when he looks vulnerable, hurt even, before his expression closes off. He hesitates. Takes a step forward towards her, to carefully lift his hand to graze her cheek.]

Katerina...

[There is a brief moment where she leans into the touch, her eyes closing before they open and she pulls from his hand.]

I can lose my life or lose you. It does not seem a fair choice.

...You do not have to lose me.

[He says it almost without thinking; it is the only possible response.]

[There is a flash of confusion on her features.]

Elijah... [She steps in closer to him, her hand resting to his chest.]

[He answers by pressing his mouth to hers. He has already declared that he will save her; there is no hiding his feelings. This is the truth.]

[The act alone sends a thrill down her, putting the hairs at the nape of her neck on end and pushing her pulse to race. It is never surprising to feel the impact the man before her has upon her. Katerina allows her hand to slide from his chest to rest at the back of his neck, returning the kiss with closed eyes and an open heart.]

[He catches her arm, holding her to him as he kisses her back, lost in the feeling of her lips on his, and the warm beat of her human heart.

When he pauses, he looks at her like she's the most breathtaking creature he's ever seen. She has only just learned of the terrible fate that she bears, and yet here she is so concerned for him.

He repeats his promise in the softest of voices:]

You do not have to lose me.

[Her free hand moves to touch fingertips to her bottom lip, a soft smirk affixing to her features as she can still feel the warmth from their kiss upon her mouth.

Of course, her happiness is short lived, because she realizes that this is not the best of times to be lingering in the memory of their kiss.]

I will continue as I have been. Klaus will not know of your confession to me, nor of your plans.

[He nods. This is what he has been hoping for.]

We will carry on as we have.

[Her eyes shut briefly, moving to lean against him once more. There is resolve in her exhale as she steps from him, from his side and nods.]

I shall trust you with my life, my Lord.

[He strokes her hair, briefly, before she steps away. Looking at her, he makes a promise to himself. He will not fail her.]

[And she'll just leave his side now, to go sob about how crappy her life has gotten.]
