THE ALPHA/BETA/OMEGA MEME

In our world, sexual roles are commonly defined by genders -- male or female or other, by sexualities -- gay or straight, bi or asexual or in-between. But what if they were defined by something else entirely?

Alpha/Beta/Omegaverse is a fusion of fanfiction tropes and animalistic behavior. In this world, sexual roles are divided into three categories: the Alphas (the dominant, the protective and the aggressive), the Betas (ordinary humans) and the Omegas (submissive, fertile and able to carry children).

ROLES:
1 - The Alpha.
* Stereotypically type A personalities.
* Anatomically: Males have a penis; females may have a penis in addition to a vagina.
* Alphas knot their mates, meaning that the base of the penis swells and locks them inside their mate while they produce copious amounts of semen in an effort to breed.
* Strong sense of smell.
* Near an Omega in heat, they experience a compulsion to mate that is almost impossible to overcome.
* Alphas may go into rut, which is their equivalent of Omega heat, and drives them to mate.

2 - The Beta.
* Ordinary human being.
* Lack of altered genitalia.
* Can mate to anyone.
* Might be able to smell hormones of Omegas and Alphas, but will not be overwhelmingly affected by them.

3 - The Omega.
* Stereotypically submissive, quiet, intelligent and less physically able.
* Female anatomy is similar to Betas; males are self-lubricating and may have either an external or internal vaginal setup.
* Regularly go into heat, which involves being overcome by the urge to mate. They are unable to consent while in heat.
* May be made compliant by a bite to the neck. However, that may also induce a mating bond.
* Often regarded as second-class citizens or prizes to be won.

SITUATIONS:
1 - Bonding - Love at first sight. You've spotted your soulmate. You can smell them, you can feel them, you know that they'll be with you until the end of your days. Unless there's something between the two of you. It could be age - maybe one of you has to wait until the other has reached maturity. It could be that the bond is one-sided, and the other has yet to fall in love. It could be an unwanted bond, or society could have divided you into different places. Is your love strong enough to conquer?

2 - Heat/Rut - The need is coming on you strong. Everyone for a half-mile around can smell it. Better find someone to ride it out with, or hole yourself up in a room with a few bottles of water and a durable sex toy. And you'd better hope that there isn't someone out there who will take advantage of your pliable state. Best case scenario, there might be a Beta who can take care of you, or fend off anyone too predatory.

3 - Pregnancy - Whether through a heat or not, you're pregnant. Congratulations - or condolences. Is it time to start a family, or time to start panicking?

4 - Suppressants - You're using suppressants to keep yourself on an even hormone cycle, skipping heats, or maybe pretending to pass as a different class of society. After all, Omegas might want to be in the military, where they're not usually allowed - or an Alpha might want to take a job in a university or as a nurse. Shouldn't they be allowed to, if their hormones are suppressed? Just hope that you don't miss a dose.

5 - Mistaken Identity - That friend that you always thought was an Alpha, or an Omega, or a neutral Beta, turns out to be something entirely different, and your world is turned absolutely upside down. Does it challenge your preconceptions? Or does it just ruin the balance between you two?

6 - Unlikely Pairs - After all, there's no actual reason that Alphas have to mate with Omegas. Maybe two Omegas can satisfy each other. Or two Alphas. Or your intended mate could easily be a Beta. Maybe this is just about breaking out of your pre-established role and becoming something new.

7 - Manifestation - In some cases, an individual may not know they are Omega, Beta or Alpha until their first heat/rut/manifestation, usually happening in early teen years. It may take you by surprise; it may be a blessing, or may be a deep disappointment.

8 - Other - Adventures in getting jobs, making families, fighting bad guys, and anything else you can come up with!

"A key. A code. A copy of something. Or he could have another way in. Rooftop access. A vacant apartment's window or balcony." There were a myriad of ways to get into a building that housed multiple tenants. "He could be posing as delivery." With all the packages and delivery services nowadays, it was entirely likely.

She was noticing his scent, but all he could smell was hers, soaked into the fabric of her seat and in a few places in the car she touched frequently. Her apartment was going to drive him crazy. "Better find out sooner than later. Shall we?" He moved to open his door, stepping out and unfolding his cane. He turned as he closed it behind him, trying to listen to the sounds around them and pick anything out of place.

Her place is on the third floor and when she gets there and unlocks it, she breathes a sigh of relief that the scent of the other Alpha is very faint. It seems he had only been there earlier when the security company was there and hadn't stayed.

"Stay for a moment. I'm afraid he might have...it sounds weird but he might have taken a trophy or something if he was in here for a while. I want to check my bedroom."

It doesn't take long to go in and when she does, she can see that her bed isn't made and it smells terrible.

"Mr. Murdock? He was in my bed. I need to wash my sheets and put on fresh ones and I hardly want to touch them."

He followed her in, picking up a trace of the same scent that he'd picked up from the bag with the envelope. It had his hackles rising. He waited by the door, nodding at her as she stated she wanted to in to check things out. His body tensed when he picked up on the change in her heartrate, and his nose wrinkled when she mentioned the bed. "I'll do it. Why don't you go get new bedding out and I'll take off what's on there."

Those protective urges were creeping in, and he wanted to take that fear out of her voice.

"All right, I'll get the new sheets out," Sansa says. She actually has a set that are recently washed and folded away and when she checks her linen closet, they still smell faintly of detergent and her so they haven't been touched by him yet. Good.

She's really shaken by this, shaken enough that once she takes the sheets out, she leans against the door of the linen closet and just tries to calm her breathing so she doesn't get upset and upset Mr. Murdock by extension. He might be a professional but he was also an Alpha and didn't need her hormones upsetting him when he was working. Or not working. It was a bit murky at this point.

With any other Alpha, that might have worked, but he was too sensitive to scents, and he could tell how upset she was. But he was here to help, not hinder. He used his cane to tap over to where she'd disappeared into the bedroom, folding it up when he found it and then moving over to where the bed was. He started with the blankets and sheets, smelling the scent of another Alpha with a sour edge to it. He hadn't just lain on the bed, and that little gift made Matt want to find him and punch his teeth down his throat.

Of all the sins, Wrath was the one that settled most comfortably on his shoulders. Matthew was feeling very wrathful in that moment. "This shouldn't take long. Open a window and we can air it out more quickly."

Sansa gets herself together and opens the window to air out the room, taking comfort in the sounds of the streets below. The smells, too, are comforting but none are more comfortable than Mr. Murdock's so she knows she's going to be trailing behind her like a little bird until she gets her feet again.

"This isn't like me," she reminds him. "I don't usually get afraid like this. I've just never had this happen to me before and I don't have anyone to stay with that would protect me. My family died when I was in university. I was here in the States at the time and they had a car accident. I haven't gotten close to anyone since."

He bundled up the soiled sheets, holding them in his arms as he turned to her. "Why not? Any particular reason you kept to yourself? Or is that some weird P.I. thing, because it's really reminding me of someone else. Ah, where's your hamper?" He gestured with the pile in his arms, not wanting to dump them anywhere other than the trash, but they were her sheets, so...

"I want to throw them away but we should keep them as evidence. Come with me to the pantry to get a garbage bag," Sansa says, putting her hand on his forearm to guide him there. It isn't far, no, but he doesn't have the benefit of his cane with his hands full and she just wants to touch him.

"Should I be calling you something else? Mr. Murdock seems a bit formal when I want to re-scent my sheets with you and you have the benefit of knowing my name is Sansa already. I only know Mr. Murdock."

It was the casual way she just stated thing that got right through to the primal part of him that had him groaning out a laugh. "Matt. You can call me Matt." He let her lead him, figuring out where they were going halfway there, but not wanting to draw away, because he could feel the warmth of her fingers through the fabric of his shirt and suit jacket. "And you, Sansa, have quite the mouth on you."

"Do I? No one has ever told me that, Matt," she says, putting particular emphasis on his name. She gets the garbage bag and takes the sheets from him, stuffing them into the bag and tying it tight before closing it up in a closet.

"There. We'll have the evidence but I don't have to smell it any longer. Thank god he didn't get to my nesting things under the bed. I don't use them often but I would hate to have to lose them. I should take a shower or something. Even throwing those away was too much contact."

"Nesting things?" Well, that was one aspect of Omegas he'd been curious about but hadn't gotten the chance to really find out himself. It wasn't as if he could look through a catalog. "Yes, yeah. Go have a shower. I'll... make sure everything's locked up."

And maybe go stand in front of the window while taking his jacket off. And his tie. Maybe his shirt. He hadn't decided.

Sansa goes and takes a shower and when she comes back out she changes into shorts and a loose t-shirt. Far too casual for meeting her lawyer but Matt is something else at this point.

“Matt? I’m out. We can order something in for food, I don’t really have anything. I’d like to talk first, though.”

No one had come to the door, and he felt a little disappointed. He'd been hoping that the other jackass would make a rush for him, but he seemed to be biding his time. Matt was distracted by both the sounds of a body being washed in a shower, and in trying not to hear a body being washed in the shower. He'd been standing near the window, looking at nothing, eyes hidden behind the red glasses when she came out. "I'm not particularly hungry right now, but if you are, please get something."

He turned back, smelling soap and shampoo, lightly scented, and her. Feminine. Omega. Temptation. "What would you like to talk about?"

Sansa puts her hand on his forearm and steps close to him, close enough to smell his warm scent and comfort herself. It's probably a bad idea to do this but she's had worse ideas and she thinks this one will turn out all right.

"I've never been with an Alpha before. They've always seemed so dangerous to me, something I need to avoid. You make me feel safe. Safe enough to be with. Safe enough to re-scent my sheets with, if you need it to be clear."

There was clearly a blush now as the implications were written out clearly enough for even him to see. "That's a... very appealing offer. One I'm seriously considering. But," he said, gesturing to the window, "I'm not entirely sure right this moment is best. He's still out there. I wouldn't be taking care of you properly if I was caught naked with you in a compromising position."

"Fair point," Sansa says. "I just wanted to inform you that you don't have to take a hands off approach and, frankly, I want your scent on me. I don't want him to get to have that over me, knowing he did that in my bed. I don't want him to be the first Alpha to mark me. Does it make sense at all?"

"I might be blind, but I'm not completely senseless. Yes, Sansa, it makes sense. You've had your property, and your sense of safety, violated. Taking control back is a perfectly natural response. Finding someone to... erase the bad memory with makes sense." He turned to where he could hear her, reaching out to find and rub a hand against her shoulder. "I'm just trying to do the right thing by you, and that means keeping you safe."

"Could I convince you that cuddling does not put you in a compromising position as my legal counsel in this matter? I'm prepared to make a strong argument," Sansa says, reaching out to touch his face lightly.

"I am not like this. I have no one and I need no one. I just...it's different now. This is different."

She was close. Too close. He could almost taste her, her hand on his face like that, and he slid his hand up along her arm from her shoulder until he could touch her hand. Press it to his face. "You should, you know. Have someone. I don't know how you've managed not to."

"If you don't let anyone close, it doesn't hurt when they leave you behind," Sansa whispers. "Betas and Omegas can't bond me. It's less of a risk than an Alpha. They can't ever fully own me, you know? It's safe. You're not safe at all."

His head turned as he nosed against the inside of her wrist. She said that last bit and he felt something twist inside him. "No," he admitted, "I'm not safe." Just not in the way she was thinking. His lips brushed over that pulse point, his scent flaring as hers drew more instinctive responses from him.

His lips are so soft against her skin and Sansa makes a little noise of want that's barely audible. It seems like even the simplest of touches is erotic when Alpha and Omega dynamics are layering together.

"Maybe it's time I wasn't so safe anymore either."

Her heart is pumping faster, harder, and he can feel everything in him focus entirely on her. Her scent. The taste of her against his lips which is like honey and sex. Need pours through him and he can feel himself reacting in the most male, physical way- the kind that's uncontrollable. Even for him. "Sansa..." His voice was a deep husk, attention suddenly shifting away from her to the hallway. There were footsteps, followed by the scent that had his grip tightening on her wrist before he made himself more careful. "Get behind me. Keep me between you and him," he said, hearing the first bangs of a heavy fist on her door.

Sansa hadn't expected the Alpha to actually show up but he's been escalating rapidly since the first contact and now it's led to this, an encounter where he thinks he'll be getting his "mate" alone and will walk in on her and Matt.

"Matt, he'll hurt you!" she whispers harshly. "We need to hide and call the police!"

"Please, just do as I ask." It was the most polite he could be when his instincts were raging at him to storm across to the door, open it, and beat the everloving shit out of the interloper. This was his Omega and like hell was he going to stand here and smell the scent of her fear souring the mood.

He let go of her wrist and headed over for the door. "You brought me over for a reason, Sansa. Let me do what I'm here for."
