THE ALPHA/BETA/OMEGA MEME


In our world, sexual roles are commonly defined by genders -- male or female or other, by sexualities -- gay or straight, bi or asexual or in-between. But what if they were defined by something else entirely?

Alpha/Beta/Omegaverse is a fusion of fanfiction tropes and animalistic behavior. In this world, sexual roles are divided into three categories: the Alphas (the dominant, the protective and the aggressive), the Betas (ordinary humans) and the Omegas (submissive, fertile and able to carry children).

ROLES:
1 - The Alpha.
* Stereotypically type A personalities.
* Anatomically: Males have a penis; females may have a penis in addition to a vagina.
* Alphas knot their mates, meaning that the base of the penis swells and locks them inside their mate while they produce copious amounts of semen in an effort to breed.
* Strong sense of smell.
* Near an Omega in heat, they experience a compulsion to mate that is almost impossible to overcome.
* Alphas may go into rut, which is their equivalent of Omega heat, and drives them to mate.

2 - The Beta.
* Ordinary human being.
* Lack of altered genitalia.
* Can mate to anyone.
* Might be able to smell hormones of Omegas and Alphas, but will not be overwhelmingly affected by them.

3 - The Omega.
* Stereotypically submissive, quiet, intelligent and less physically able.
* Female anatomy is similar to Betas; males are self-lubricating and may have either an external or internal vaginal setup.
* Regularly go into heat, which involves being overcome by the urge to mate. They are unable to consent while in heat.
* May be made compliant by a bite to the neck. However, that may also induce a mating bond.
* Often regarded as second-class citizens or prizes to be won.

SITUATIONS:
1 - Bonding - Love at first sight. You've spotted your soulmate. You can smell them, you can feel them, you know that they'll be with you until the end of your days. Unless there's something between the two of you. It could be age - maybe one of you has to wait until the other has reached maturity. It could be that the bond is one-sided, and the other has yet to fall in love. It could be an unwanted bond, or society could have divided you into different places. Is your love strong enough to conquer?

2 - Heat/Rut - The need is coming on you strong. Everyone for a half-mile around can smell it. Better find someone to ride it out with, or hole yourself up in a room with a few bottles of water and a durable sex toy. And you'd better hope that there isn't someone out there who will take advantage of your pliable state. Best case scenario, there might be a Beta who can take care of you, or fend off anyone too predatory.

3 - Pregnancy - Whether through a heat or not, you're pregnant. Congratulations - or condolences. Is it time to start a family, or time to start panicking?

4 - Suppressants - You're using suppressants to keep yourself on an even hormone cycle, skipping heats, or maybe pretending to pass as a different class of society. After all, Omegas might want to be in the military, where they're not usually allowed - or an Alpha might want to take a job in a university or as a nurse. Shouldn't they be allowed to, if their hormones are suppressed? Just hope that you don't miss a dose.

5 - Mistaken Identity - That friend that you always thought was an Alpha, or an Omega, or a neutral Beta, turns out to be something entirely different, and your world is turned absolutely upside down. Does it challenge your preconceptions? Or does it just ruin the balance between you two?

6 - Unlikely Pairs - After all, there's no actual reason that Alphas have to mate with Omegas. Maybe two Omegas can satisfy each other. Or two Alphas. Or your intended mate could easily be a Beta. Maybe this is just about breaking out of your pre-established role and becoming something new.

7 - Manifestation - In some cases, an individual may not know they are Omega, Beta or Alpha until their first heat/rut/manifestation, usually happening in early teen years. It may take you by surprise; it may be a blessing, or may be a deep disappointment.

8 - Other - Adventures in getting jobs, making families, fighting bad guys, and anything else you can come up with!

[ Call him desperate, call him intrigued--they're two sides of the same coin anyway, but hiring another PI was the last thing he thought he'd do to untangle himself from this mess of a family tragedy. The thought surfaces during a slow morning shower and sticks around his head the whole day. By dark, it's two in the morning, when he's waking up for no good reason, the thought is irresistible, and he texts the cell number he finds on the business card she handed to him at the bar.

She seemed dark, smart, seemed like a go-getter like him, willing to go to lengths to accomplish her goal. More importantly, the snark she'd delivered had convinced him she'd be able to handle the various characters she'll surely come across if she agreed to work for him.

Not to mention, he's tired of omega service personnel who bent at his every wish and heeled at his beck and call, waiting for him to come up with the plans and call the shots. Didn't he hire others for a reason? Besides, butting heads with another alpha is nothing new to him. It'll be a small annoyance to tolerate if she manages to dig up good information, as her reputation promises.

So they set a time to meet at his house and he spends the next few days forgetting all about it. Until the door bell sounds at three in the afternoon, when he's lounging about in nothing but boxers and a robe. He ignores it for a few beats as he puzzles over the sound. He lives on a private road, in a quiet, sprawling part outside town. He had friends who joked that it was a serial killer's house with its cold steel and glass and its cove in the woods. And they were right, ironically, but he'd chosen it for its privacy and how difficult it was to get to. So the door bell throws him off until his memory finally jolts at the early morning, sleep-addled texts he'd sent out, and he swears under his breath.

He doesn't like being caught off guard, especially not in situations like this. When he feels the heaviness just starting to settle in the pit of his stomach, warm and insistent, when the rut is just starting to cloud his thoughts, dividing everything into yes or no, into black or white, into fuckable, or not, with no room for nuances in between. But it's just starting and he doesn't think it's obvious yet, especially to another alpha. He'll just tell her off, tell her he'll call later or something, so he can enjoy the rest of the afternoon and find someone for later tonight.

The robe is left open as he opens the door with another insistent chime of the bell. He knows he looks decidedly good, knows he turns heads from all the ranks, and he uses it to his advantage, but it's really not his intention to do this with her. ]

The mission to meet with a rebel group on the farthest out of the way place as possible had been a trap. Thace had been prepared for everything to go sideways except for getting stuck here with no way back to the fleet. The rebels had gotten away safely after he'd managed a warning, and the one behind the trap dead to hide his involvement. But his fighter wasn't spaceworthy anymore, and he had no idea how else to go home.

So his only choice is to try to pass as a local while he searches for a way. Except for coloring, he looks enough like the ones called Tabaxi to get away with that, and an intentionally awkward 'magic' accident excuse tends to leave others not prying about his purple fur.

His skills let him explain his wanderings as being an adventurer (fighter/rogue is how others tend to parse his abilities) and he's ended up being a part of a group. Even if he feels like he's on a timer, he is actually enjoying himself for the most part.

Thace has gotten worried about Dorian since yesterday though. There's a change in scent and he can't place why. One instinct says to keep quiet, but the rest of him is worried about his new friend.

The latter wins. "Dorian... I don't mean to pry, but are you okay?"

[Generally OTA, pass on Situation #3. Ishtar is an Alpha personality summoned into an Omega body, but considering the circumstances (like say her original self overwrites the current body) I could write either role depending on what her partner ends up being.

I particularly enjoy the separate A/B/O categories being separated into castes and putting a focus on societal structures that could manifest around them as a backdrop for the thread. A few examples:

i. Elevated Normalcy: Betas are the top tier in class because they are above the basic urges and impulses that Alphas and Omegas fall to. Betas will sometimes take an Alpha or Omega companion depending on if they'd like a soft homemaker or a loyal guard. Because Alphas and Omegas are "lower" they are socialized much like pets and slotted into specific roles depending on what they are. Sometimes Betas will even sign their companion up for a part time job that suits their inclinations, or place them in breeding programs if they have good genes or are well-learned in obedience and mannerisms.

ii. Gentle Rulers: Omegas are a rare form of royalty class that are revered for their gentle and loving nature. In this structure Betas are common folk and Alphas are feared brutes — usually participating in gladiator style tournaments to be chosen as an Omega's guard and mate. It is up to you to decide if it is a monogamous ordeal, or if Omegas may have more than one lover due to the assumption about their needy nature.

iii. As Expected?: Outside of rut Alphas are known as gentle giants. Sturdy protectors and eager to provide safety and comfort. Some may be like lions who only assert themselves when one of their charges is threatened, others may be the type to make sure their always prepared to fill the needs of their companions (fanny pack of snacks, water bottle on hand for those that tire easily, distraction tools for anxious companions, etc). Yet still Betas are considered working class citizens and Omegas are commodities - bought, sold, or traded like items in a collection.
