Word Association is a common word game involving an exchange of words that are associated together. [ there's a pause. they're more alike than aki likes to think, sometimes. ]

Yeah?

[ angel isn't deadset on winning so he shrugs and gives up the 1-word game rule, pulling his legs to his chest, chin nestled in the v of his knees. ]

I think so.

[chainletter]

[ aki figured the game would end sooner rather than later; as far as he's aware, angel has never been very competitive. ]

That makes sense. [ he pauses, reaching into his pocket for his half-empty pack of cigarettes. ] I suppose it's harder to fly in the city, with all the telephone wires and skyscrapers.

[subtracted]

Mmhmm.

And too many people.

Yeah. It's a bit too much, even for me.

[ spilling his personal feelings with a devil? that's a new one. ]

But it's harder to get ice cream in the countryside.

...I didn't think of that.

[ and angel who doesn't read too deeply into it, almost like he can't blinks as he stares at aki, head tilted. ]

You could leave.

[ aki isn't bound like the devils, but angel already knows the answer actually. part of the devil in him for saying at all maybe. ]

[chainletter]

[ leave. as if it's that easy. aki's brows furrow before he even realizes it, and he responds: ]

I can't. I have to find the Gun Devil.

[subtracted]

[ a long pause, stare. wings seem to twitch before going still again. ]

You can't do that without the bureau?

[chainletter]

I need access to the Gun Devil's flesh. Only the bureau can give me that.

[ if he could, he'd be doing this without the need for all the paperwork and red tape - but he's resigned himself to his current position. ]

Besides, it's easier to contract with powerful Devils like this.

[ at this, he gives angel a begrudging sort of smile. ]

[subtracted]

[ contractless himself, angel meets that smile with a perhaps unnerving stare, as if he is trying to read more out of aki. quite a bit more effort than he usually puts into things. ]

Even if you find it, what then? You think you're strong enough to deal with that kind of devil?

[chainletter]

[ it's unnerving, alright; if aki weren't - well - aki, he'd be cowering beneath that gaze. ]

No. I know I'm not.

[ he'd come to terms with that fact a long time ago. ]

But I don't have a choice. [ a pause; a correction: ] I can't allow myself to have a choice.

[subtracted]

Why?

[ the stare continues, but angel does not move closer, though the tip of his head sends his hair spilling over his shoulder, and the angle casts only half the light of his halo across his face. in a way, he's annoyed with himself. it shouldn't matter to him "why" aki does anything, believing he has a choice or otherwise.

but this sort of inevitable doom picks at angel the wrong way, at a memory he cannot touch. ]

[ it's an answer aki knows by heart, and he recites it almost emotionlessly, the way one would present mundane business information. ]

Because if I do, I won't be able to defeat him. It'd be too easy to back out.

[subtracted]

[ to this, angel looks away finally, hair spilling forward in a way that curtains off his profile. he guesses nothing he would say would change aki's mind and sort of knew that before starting this conversation line, but it still.... bothers him. he doesn't honestly want to look too closely at why. ]
