The Criminal AU Meme

THE CRIMINAL AU MEME

Warning: This meme will contain violent content and possible triggers.

HOW TO PLAY:
1) Post a comment below, detailing your character and canon. For best results, DO NOT LEAVE THIS COMMENT BLANK; pick a role, or an AU, or write up a little on what you'd like to explore with your character.
2) Tag around and make magic happen.
3) If you get stuck, use RNG to select from the options below.

THE ROLE.
1) Criminal. (The one who committed the act.)
2) Law enforcement. (Cop, FBI, prison guard.)
3) Witness. (What did you see?)
4) Victim. (Probably not applicable in the case of murder. … Probably.)
5) Lawyer, judge, or paralegal. (Participant in the legal system.)
6) Private security. (Unaffiliated, but with an interest in keeping your client safe. Or in getting your target caught.)
7) Other. (Let your imagination go wild.)

THE CRIME.
1) ROBBERY. The crime of stealing via force or threat or fear.
You need the money. You're desperate. You have the gun, the convenience store is right there, and everything will be better once you've finished the job.

Or maybe you've been hired. Provide a little intimidation, and someone else will take care of all your problems.

Or it's a thrill. Rolling across the country, robbing banks as you go. A Bonnie & Clyde crime spree, and it can only end one way.

2) BURGLARY. Illegal entry into a building for the purposes of committing theft.
Non-violence, for you; you're just going to break in, take this one thing. Maybe a television, to sell for the cash. Maybe some jewelry, a computer.

Or maybe you're a master thief, dangling from a wire into a museum. Sliding through the air ducts of a skyscraper in search of a particular little item.

3) GRAND THEFT AUTO. The criminal act of stealing a motor vehicle.
You know your cars. And you can steal one in under 60 seconds. Better hope you don't get tripped up with one of those newfangled security systems.

4) MURDER. The act of killing another.
He had to die. He had to, and the guilt of knowing where you buried the body, of knowing that the police are coming after you -- it's starting to wear down your sanity.

5) SERIAL MURDER. A crime involving the killing of three or more people over a period of more than a month.
You have a drive to kill. Again, and again. Nothing satisfies it, nothing stops it. Maybe you hate yourself. Maybe you hate the human scum who only exist to go under your knife.

Or maybe you're a professional hit man. You've killed dozens, you know how it goes. It's just business.

6) CONSPIRACY. An agreement between two or more persons to break the law at some time in the future.
Mafia, Yakuza, crime families who keep their operations quiet under pain of death, dishonor, betrayal of the family. You're part of one of these operations, whether as a patriarch or a peon.

7) FRAUD. Intentional deception made for personal gain.
Blackmail. Cover-ups. Insider trading -- the marks of corporate crime. Perhaps you're a CEO who thinks they can do whatever they want. Perhaps your business is on the rocks and you just need a little time to make your golden parachute before you ditch it.

Or maybe you meant to destroy it. Maybe you're a professional con man, and you're stepping away from your latest conquest with plenty of cash in hand.

8) KIDNAPPING. The false imprisonment of another person against their will.
Do you do it for the ransom? For the money? For revenge?

Or is it a hostage situation, with dozens of prisoners, for some sort of political gain?

9) TERRORISM. The systematic use of terror, especially as a means of coercion.
For a religion, for a philosophy. But -- are you a terrorist, or are you a freedom fighter? It might just be a matter of point of view.

10) WILD CARD. For any crime not mentioned above.

The scene in front of him; the girl handcuffed to the bed, would have turned his stomach only a few weeks ago. But he hadn't really really understood then that the evil he'd fought against was exactly what he should have embraced. That there was no meaning to his struggle, that he'd done nothing but indulge Ren's savior complex. The Diabolo had promised better. And what better sacrifice to his altar than her?

Rai wound a few of Sara's curls around his finger, drinking in her expression. For all her pretenses she'd never been what she appeared to be-- that made them a fitting pair, didn't it? Not that he really knew who she was, in the recesses of his brain, no matter how she protested. It wasn't Sara he saw, another girl's image was impressed in his head. Had been for ten years.

"You know why you're here."

The handcuffs made a metallic scraping sound against the headboard as Sara tried to roll away from him, an unpleasant, clinging shiver running through her when she felt the faint tug of a strand of hair being wound around his finger. She twisted her head away from him, trying to shrug him off.

Sara carefully measured each breath, not about to let them come too hard or too fast. She felt the tingle of adrenaline all through her, but she refused to give him the satisfaction of seeing her afraid of him. That was probably what he wanted, and she wasn't going to reward his sickness with the thing he craved the most. She stared directly up at him with a hard, angry glare.

"No," she answered. "I don't." Not for sure, anyway. She would be lying if she said she didn't have any theories, all of them stomach-turning.

Her hands in the handcuffs flexed experimentally, as she tried to figure out if she could pull them through or not.

"But you seem to want me to, don't you?" she asked. "There's something you want to tell me. You're aching for me to know. Isn't that true?" She felt a streak of sick satisfaction at the way she was able to keep her voice from shaking. She could only hope she was right. If she knew what he wanted, then maybe she could use that to escape.

She tried to make sense of the way he looked at her. It was almost as if she was familiar to him, but Sara was sure she had never seen this boy before in her life. There was almost something like fondness in his expression, but it was tinged with something much darker, something predatory, something Sara didn't understand and that she hoped she never would.

He tugged cruelly at the strands. Long and blonde, with the same waviness that she'd had. She was the right age, or around it, not that Rai really needed to convince himself of anything when he was already certain. Only her expression was different, defiant instead of submissive. There was a rebellious streak in her that didn't suit his memories, but perfectly matched the knowledge he'd gleaned from Nema, from the Devil.

"It's past time you stopped pretending." Rai's voice was soft, gentle almost, admonishing. "I spent ten years wondering what had happened to you. If we really had killed you that day the way everyone said. I didn't know how you really were, Mio. I didn't realize you'd planned it out from the start yourself."

His hand drifted to cup over her face, leaning in towards her, barely inches away. Something eager passed over his features for a brief second, cracked through the facade. "I can't imagine how he'd feel if he knew. It would crush him, wouldn't it? To see?"

Somehow, this was worse than Sara had first imagined, and it didn't seem like that should have been possible. His voice poured over her like honey, the feeling it gave her sticking and settling uncomfortable in every joint, while the acid in her stomach churned like it was trying to bore a hole through her belly. Forcing herself to keep her breathing even became even harder.

This guy wasn't just evil. He was insane. He spoke to her like he thought she was someone else, and he didn't seem to see her for herself when he saw her. No wonder he acted like she should know him.

"Crush who?" she asked, voice still even and more than slightly angry. His hand on her made her want to crawl out of her own skin. Getting through to him felt like a long shot; she had seen enough people as mad as he was, in her short life, to know that reasoning with them always failed. Maybe she could try anyway. What other options did she have? "I don't know who you're talking about. Don't you get it? I'm not who you think I am. I don't know what this 'Mio' planned, but if she's dead, then she's really dead! You can't bring her back by torturing me! If she's not dead, you still won't find her here!"

She took a deep breath. "So get your hand off me!" Then Sara spit in his face.
