The Criminal AU Meme

THE CRIMINAL AU MEME

Warning: This meme will contain violent content and possible triggers.

HOW TO PLAY:
1) Post a comment below, detailing your character and canon. For best results, DO NOT LEAVE THIS COMMENT BLANK; pick a role, or an AU, or write up a little on what you'd like to explore with your character.
2) Tag around and make magic happen.
3) If you get stuck, use RNG to select from the options below.

THE ROLE.
1) Criminal. (The one who committed the act.)
2) Law enforcement. (Cop, FBI, prison guard.)
3) Witness. (What did you see?)
4) Victim. (Probably not applicable in the case of murder. … Probably.)
5) Lawyer, judge, or paralegal. (Participant in the legal system.)
6) Private security. (Unaffiliated, but with an interest in keeping your client safe. Or in getting your target caught.)
7) Other. (Let your imagination go wild.)

THE CRIME.
1) ROBBERY. The crime of stealing via force or threat or fear.
You need the money. You're desperate. You have the gun, the convenience store is right there, and everything will be better once you've finished the job.

Or maybe you've been hired. Provide a little intimidation, and someone else will take care of all your problems.

Or it's a thrill. Rolling across the country, robbing banks as you go. A Bonnie & Clyde crime spree, and it can only end one way.

2) BURGLARY. Illegal entry into a building for the purposes of committing theft.
Non-violence, for you; you're just going to break in, take this one thing. Maybe a television, to sell for the cash. Maybe some jewelry, a computer.

Or maybe you're a master thief, dangling from a wire into a museum. Sliding through the air ducts of a skyscraper in search of a particular little item.

3) GRAND THEFT AUTO. The criminal act of stealing a motor vehicle.
You know your cars. And you can steal one in under 60 seconds. Better hope you don't get tripped up with one of those newfangled security systems.

4) MURDER. The act of killing another.
He had to die. He had to, and the guilt of knowing where you buried the body, of knowing that the police are coming after you -- it's starting to wear down your sanity.

5) SERIAL MURDER. A crime involving the killing of three or more people over a period of more than a month.
You have a drive to kill. Again, and again. Nothing satisfies it, nothing stops it. Maybe you hate yourself. Maybe you hate the human scum who only exist to go under your knife.

Or maybe you're a professional hit man. You've killed dozens, you know how it goes. It's just business.

6) CONSPIRACY. An agreement between two or more persons to break the law at some time in the future.
Mafia, Yakuza, crime families who keep their operations quiet under pain of death, dishonor, betrayal of the family. You're part of one of these operations, whether as a patriarch or a peon.

7) FRAUD. Intentional deception made for personal gain.
Blackmail. Cover-ups. Insider trading -- the marks of corporate crime. Perhaps you're a CEO who thinks they can do whatever they want. Perhaps your business is on the rocks and you just need a little time to make your golden parachute before you ditch it.

Or maybe you meant to destroy it. Maybe you're a professional con man, and you're stepping away from your latest conquest with plenty of cash in hand.

8) KIDNAPPING. The false imprisonment of another person against their will.
Do you do it for the ransom? For the money? For revenge?

Or is it a hostage situation, with dozens of prisoners, for some sort of political gain?

9) TERRORISM. The systematic use of terror, especially as a means of coercion.
For a religion, for a philosophy. But -- are you a terrorist, or are you a freedom fighter? It might just be a matter of point of view.

10) WILD CARD. For any crime not mentioned above.

[ Criminal or private security; assassination and espionage are both very valid options, as is terrorism. He works best as someone else (usually Bane)'s minion. He is also a professional, and will have a clear head on his shoulders when other people are doing ridiculous and bewildering things. ]

[Dale Cooper entered the building with a cassette tape.]

Diane, I am now making my way to Detective Victor Frankenstein. Shouldn't be too hard to remember. He's been working on the case for quite some time now. I'm expected to partner up with him. I don't foresee any possible problems, but I best keep my wits about me. Lunch was $17.86. That was a tuna sandwich, a bag of chips, and a cup of black coffee. Damn good food. You should really stop by there if you ever take a vacation here.

[Clicking off the tape, he makes his way to the desk. He holds out a hand to shake.]

You must be Detective Frankenstein. I'm Special Agent Dale Cooper.

[ To explain the situation, pure and simple: Barsad is surrounded by a whole bunch of crazy fucking morons.

This job started easy enough. It was, in fact, exactly what Barsad wants from jobs like this, which is to bore him. Boredom means life. And life is distinctly the opposite of what he has seen so many colleagues, friends, brothers-in-arms meet. Barsad is under no illusions: he might be really good at his job, but it's mostly luck that he's still alive and well today. Hence: boredom.

But very suddenly all of this has become very un-boring.

This member of, shall we say, the Russian mafia -- not that they would call themselves that -- has gone completely off-script. He has all but started to twirl his mustache like a Bond villain and begun intoning his various plans to rule the world. He has told Barsad to conduct kidnappings, and kills, and also to buy some excruciatingly expensive wine that costs about a third as much as Barsad's quarterly contract. All in all, Barsad considers these actions equally insane. He drew the attention of the FBI, and then probably the CIA, and given that they're planning to bring this particular man (whom Barsad has kidnapped) across international borders, no doubt INTERPOL, as well as the authorities of whichever country they land in, is going to be seriously pissed off at them.

This puts Barsad in something of a quandary. His contract is to do what he is told. This does include illegal actions. Otherwise, he would not cost so much. However, he is pretty sure that this rogue mafia agent is going to get everyone involved in this very thoroughly dead, possibly very soon, and he does definitely not want to be a part of that. Besides, it's his fault that the kidnappee is here, and if anyone in this situation deserves to not get killed in a horrible way, it's probably him.

Unfortunately, if he breaks the contract, it is possible that the mafia will take a poor view of his disloyalty, and that there will be insane fucking consequences. Which he does not want either.

They are in a plane, right now. A private plane, the fancy kind, rented out of some money Barsad thinks the mafia man is probably not supposed to spend, one with a bedroom and a real bed in the back with a flatscreen TV against the wall at the foot.

He has the hostage on the bed, right now. The pilots are doing some magic with flight plans and manifests. Barsad is on guard duty. He watches the hostage, who has been zip-tied and deprived of all sharp or useful implements.

This is all far above Barsad's pay grade. ]

[This wouldn't be the first time Edgeworth has found himself crossing paths with someone whose jurisdiction is greater than his in the course of a case, but that still doesn't make it an everyday or expected thing. Edgeworth raises an eyebrow -- and, inwardly, his hackles, as there's always the chance of being bullied out of seeking the truth for himself when this happens -- but keeps his cool.]

That would be me, yes. I hadn't been informed of this; might I ask what brings someone of your stature here?

(I'm left to wonder if perhaps some communication was lost in transit, as I don't recall making the error of dismissing someone attempting to hand me a report again...)

[Ryan is an interesting captive because he honestly doesn't care if he lives or dies. Barsad could shoot him in the head right now and Ryan would be fine with that. She considered herself the heir to that title, yes, though the truth behind what the Yatagarasu really was proved to be more complex than she presumed it to be. Furthermore, despite clear temptations to do otherwise, to my knowledge she's never stolen anything tangible.
