[Dean doesn't care. He doesn't care if it's unfair or that Sam is really old enough that he can probably handle a short walk. He doesn't care because there are horrors real and dangerous in this world that would just love to get revenge on the man who hunts them by torturing and killing his sons. Dean doesn't give much of a damn for himself, but he does for his baby brother.]

You don't get a vote, Sammy. [Bitchface or no, Dean just glares right back.] Next time you call! Now sit down and do your homework while I get us some dinner.

[Sam rolls his eyes, but it's not worth it. He was going to do homework anyway, before that whole display earlier. He knows Dean is worried about him, about getting into trouble with their dad too, but he still doesn't get what the big deal is about a short walk from school to their motel.] Whatever.

[Stepping around Dean, he puts his bag down and takes a seat at the table] What's for dinner anyway?

Pizza.

[It's not the healthiest of food but it beats the instant ramen packages they've been eating for the last week and a half. Dad is over a week late and the money ran out a few days before he was due. Dean finally snuck out last night when Sam was asleep and made a little money so they should be able to eat for a few more days at least.]

Pepperoni alright?

Sure, that's fine.

[He shifts a little in his chair and tries to get his focus back on his homework. A little hard with the scene he walked in on and then the argument with Dean, but... he was trying.]

Better than ramen or mac and cheese again.

[There are moments in the midst of all his teen angst that Dean is genuinely angry with his father for the life he has given them. Sure he wants to avenge their mother just as bad, but shouldn't giving Sammy a normal life be the priority? It's what mom would have wanted, and he's a smart kid. He deserves a chance at school and a future.

But things are hard enough without Dean admitting that, so he usually stays in a state of denial. Things are marginally easier when he doesn't admit it to himself.]

Yeah, well it's what we had.

Yeah, I know... [Sam might complain to Dean about a lot of things, but he doesn't really blame him for the food or anything. He knows they don't have a lot, that they make what they do have work however they can.

Doesn't mean he wouldn't kill for a more normal dinner once in awhile, like everyone else has.]

Have you heard from Dad?

[Dean is flipping through the phone book in their hotel room, looking for the pizza place with the cheapest menu and he doesn't look up at Sam's question. It's probably redundant, he would have said so if he had, but Sam is a kid and dad's been radio silent long enough to make Dean worry too.]

He's probably just busy, Sam.

Maybe... [It's been a long time, even by dad's standards. Sam can't help but worry. Pissed as he usually is at the man, it's still scary to think about him in trouble and alone.

Sam stays quiet for a few more minutes, idly scanning the pages laid out in front of him.]

What if he doesn't call soon?

[Dean wants to get frustrated, mad, because these are his own fears being parroted at him by someone who wants to be reassured everything is okay - by someone who ... well making sure everything's okay is his job. Sam's not making it easy. Still, he curbs the impulse to snap and sets aside the phone book. He glances over at his brother where he's seated with his homework.]

He'll call eventually and if he doesn't ... I'll take care of you, Sammy. Don't worry. If we don't hear from dad in a day or so we'll call Uncle Bobby, okay?

Yeah... alright, Dean. [He's not sure how his brother will take care of him or what they'd do if something really happened to dad, but he wants to believe Dean. Besides, thinking about it... it's not going to help, is it?]

Hopefully he'll call tomorrow.

[Dean already does more than Sam knows, more than he ever wants him to know. He may not be the best at taking care of himself, but he always tries to make sure Sam has everything he needs often to the detriment of himself.]

Just do your homework. Lemme call in this pizza.

[He moves across the room to the hotel phone then and dials the number before placing their order.]

[Sam nods and tries to get his attention back on his work and give Dean time enough to put in their order. Truth be told, he's getting hungry now and the idea of pizza is sounding even better.

Besides, it beats having to talk about what dad may or may not be up to, right?]

[Once the pizza is ordered, Dean flops on the couch and flicks through the channels on the tv. He's paid them through with the room for another few days, hopefully dad makes some signs of life before then or Dean's going to have to go out again. The thought makes a small worried frown pull at his features.]

How was your math test?

Aced it. [Sam couldn't help the pride in his voice at that. The question got a grin out of him too. Couldn't help it. At least Dean seemed to care about what he did in school, not just how well he did in hunting, or at least he feigned it well enough.]

What'd you do today?

[It makes Dean smile too, tears a stupid grin right across his face as soon as he hears it and before he can tuck it back where it belongs under a mask of disinterested older brother.

Dean however was not in school. It was the first year Sam went that Dean didn't have to which was weird and irritating in that he couldn't check on him periodically throughout the day. He knew this because he'd tried it and had been threatened with being escorted off the grounds. Dad had yelled at him that night and told him not to make waves.]

Eh, not a lot. I slept. Watched daytime television and then read part of your book about hobbits.

[Oh, Sam saw that grin and it just makes his own wider. For all their fights and how annoying Dean can be sometimes, part of Sam still wants Dean to be proud of him... still looks up to him.

And it was just weird, too. Not having Dean in school with him, not seeing him until he was done for the day. Some ways, it's easier not having Dean hanging around, and in others, it's just lame. Not that Sam would own up to it.

At the mention of the book, he lets out a chuckle.]

It's a good book, right?

Yeah it's cool. It's by the same guy who did those Lord of the Rings books right? Is this like a sequel? Cause I thought they got rid of that ring.

[He's not much of a reader, but Dean does pick up a book every now and then, usually something Sam's brought home from the library. He won't admit it but he likes having something to talk to his brother about that's 'normal'.]

It's a prequel, so it's set before all that. [Sam liked getting to talk about normal stuff with Dean too, like normal siblings.

Or as normal as they ever got anyway.]
