Some are gentle and uplifting while others can be discouraging or even harmful, so one should always be mindful of the unspoken messages they intend to convey to those around them.

There's a kind of detente that the faculty has with the students over holidays. It's unspoken that the boys are largely left to their own devices, so long as they break nothing, hurt no one, and make it to meals on time. After all, the limited staff remaining on campus during the break wants a little vacation too. As it turns out, there's plenty that can go under the radar under those parameters. Smoking, drinking, any amount of gossip, even fighting if no one involved is willing to narc. Of course, there's studying and sleeping in, besides. The fifteen or twenty boys remaining on campus make a robust world for each other, silly at times, at others cruel, horrific, peaceful, lonesome, or magical. 

For Bruce's part, he kept to himself before Harvey came in sophomore year. Now, he keeps to himself, but just at the edge of wherever Harvey is. He's amenable to the occasional joke, sounds off on the occasional argument, drinks their contraband booze only a little slower than average. Then, when he's had enough, he takes his leave to smoke a cigarette. That's usually his queue to head back to his room and turn in for the night. 

Tonight is special, though. It's Thanksgiving night, and it just so happens to be Julian's birthday. To celebrate the day and to mourn being far from home, they break into the dean's lounge a few hours after dinner to apprise themselves of the comfortable seating, the worn pool table, the fireplace, and the stereo that's about five years out of date but plays from their MP3 players just fine. Plundering the liquor cabinet is risky, but they've accumulated their own stash over the years--enough to have over a dozen teenagers tipsy. 

It's a good atmosphere. Bitching about classes. Handing out advice freely to younger students. Warren's brought a care package his stepmother sent, once again full of allergen-laden snacks that he can't have and  jerky that he won't eat as a staunch vegetarian. This holiday's been a wash for him, but he takes it well enough when he's cheered for carting the package in. Arjun is heckling Harvey over his pool-shooting technique. Tom and Julian are in a spirited debate about politicians in some place overseas. Bruce happily nurses a vodka cranberry in a water bottle, an experiment with the leftover cranberry from Thanksgiving dinner. It's too tart and leaves a too-clean taste in his mouth, but he's had enough of it that his head is pleasantly cloudy, fingertips a little numb at the ends, just like the tips of his nose and ears, the ridge of his lips. Everything feels right with the world for almost two hours. 

That's when the inevitable talk of parents comes in. Missing families. Various traditions. Hopes for Christmas and New Years. Bruce is buzzing enough that it doesn't sting immediately, but he knows full well that this line of discussion is only going to leave him melancholy if he listens too long. It's out for a smoke he goes, out to the patio. He sits against the wall rather than on one of the stone benches or out near the still fountain. Doesn't want to draw attention by being immediately visible, doesn't want to look surly. It's nippy out here, just short of frosty, and things will certainly get colder into the night. Back against the cold wall, Bruce pinches his bottle of cocktail between his knees to fumble with his lighter and a cigarette in his mouth. 

He only distantly registers that someone is coming out over the snap of the flame. Doesn't bother to look up. If it's anyone else, they'll go, and if it's Harvey...if it's Harvey he'll do what he's doing. Coming straight to Bruce once he spots him, dropping down at his left side. Harvey sits close enough that their knees brush if Bruce lets his legs sway, so that the molecules of their shoulders catch and dodge each other teasingly. Bruce hums around his cigarette and takes a long drag. That's hello in Wayne. As he exhales, he leans his head to Harvey's shoulder and passes the cigarette, watching the smoke dissipate into the clear sky.

Harley, however, is completely incapable of reading the room, so while most people can subconsciously pick up Layla's "do not touch" vibes and keep their damn hands to their damn selves ... Well. Harley barges through the world without a second thought, and sometimes people get caught in her wake. ]

What's that? Can we get that? Oooh! Wait, what's over there? Oh, look at those colors!

[ Harley has managed to grab Layla's hand and pulls her whichever direction catches her eye, turning and zigzagging through the shops. She's completely off-mission now. She might not even remember what the mission objective even is anymore. ]

[ This is a really bad idea. But when he saw Jason and his cronies walk into the Navy Surplus Store he knew he had to go and warn the others. He grabbed an army jacket from the back of the RV and shrugged off his leather jacket to sling it on. He grabbed a hat and pulled it tight over his head, turning up the collar on the jacket to hide as much of his face and hair as he could. He ducked into the store, grabbing Max and telling her that Jason was there. She went to tell the others, leaving Eddie to grab Steve who had moved towards the bathroom. Eddie had seen the way he'd moved uncomfortably, the hint of red under the make shift bandage they'd tied around him. He'd put his money on the fact that Harrington was trying to clean things up. He moves quickly, grabbing a camping first aid kit and tucking it under his jacket as he moves to the men's room door. It's locked and he knocks quickly, turning his head away from the store. ] Harrington. Open up.

[ being mortal is strange. it's also a little annoying.

andy can't sleep sometimes and the extremes she used to go to while immortal aren't really an option anymore. she tries to hide her exhaustion but that's not so easy anymore either. at some point she gave up trying to protect everyone from the realities of her mortality.

she sits quietly in the small the living room, sleep being illusive once more. she's been dreaming again, violent dreams filled with blood and heartache. books help keep the worst of the guilt at bay and usually she can fall asleep before the sun rises.

tonight she's not nearly as lucky, but she does feel her lids start to sting and get heavy. she contemplates getting a tea for a moment, but realizes the chair she's in is far too comfortable. ]
