THE TRAIN TO THE AFTERLIFE

Congratulations! your character is dead — for whatever reason, whether it be canon, au, what have you. it'll be a bit of a journey to the afterlife, though, so your character might as well talk to the other people. death knows no place: most of them are strangers, even from faraway worlds. but death knows no time either, so who knows, some of them may be familiar people, whether recently deceased or long so. maybe your character know how they died, maybe they don't. perhaps the memory is fuzzy, or perhaps it's crystal clear. maybe it was simply their time or maybe they weren't at all ready to go, but none of it matters. your character knows they're dead and the train is taking them to an afterlife.

[Paul hangs awkwardly around the train, voice quiet when he talks as if he's trying not to draw attention to himself. There's dried blood on his shirt, as if from a recent wound. He is still in the Preacher clothes he was wearing when he was killed.]

[Danny looks much younger than any other time Paul's seen him -- clearly a teenager and not a young adult. Most of his body is covered in ugly burns, which probably explains the way that he winces when he takes a seat across from Paul in the train compartment.]

[There's a moment of quiet, where Danny studies Paul and the signs of his death. Then, just a quiet, simple] Hello.

[ Gwen after her death looks similar to the Gwen of when she was living, except there's blood at the back of her head from the impact her head made with the ground, to go along with the blood coming from her nose. Beyond that, she's immaculate in her black and purple top, purple skirt, tights, knee high boots and mint colored jacket. Somehow, she's able to sit on the train despite how her back also cracked due to the whiplash from the webline that had connected to her waist. She doesn't look scared, because she knew what was about to happen to her before it did. Gwen just hopes that her family, her friends, Peter will be alright now that she's left them. ]

[He looks quite serene for a young man with a bloodstained coat, looking outside the window and eating a bread roll he got from the food cart lady. From time to time, he glances at the aisle and the taken seats, hoping to spot a familiar face or two.]

[ Kirei lets out a small sigh as he walks down the aisle. His hands clasped behind his back; each step sounds purposeful and without hesitation, even if they are muffled slightly by the sound of the train itself.

He is not dressed as he usually was in life. There is something odd about seeing him walk around in a black tee-shirt and dress-pants, but not so much the combination of attire. It may be there is blood running down both arms and it appears that there is a sizable hole in his chest.

Pausing, he stops to look to the young man that appears rather serene as he sits in a bloodstained coat. Kirei drifts his eyes past him to look out the window, noting the scene passing them by, before saying: ]

It seems you also lost your battle.

[Maedhros is still leaving a trail of smoke behind him as he moves along the train. The memory of the fire he gave himself over to is still clear in his mind, as is what came before it. He is somewhat in a daze when he enters the compartment and colapses into one of the seats, hardly noticing the woman at all. This had not been where he'd expected to find himself after his death]

What is this place? This isn't the Everlasting Darkness... is it?

[He is muttering to himself, trying to make sense of the situation he's found himself in.]

Loki has been very quiet in his seat since he arrived on the train. About the only thing he's bothered to do is loosen the collar of his shirt--which he's done repeatedly--and frown at whatever's passing outside the window. Some people who can't accept that they're dead are loud about it--rage, rage against the dying of the light and all that. Others are sullen, or plotting an escape. Hard to tell if Loki is the latter or if he's just in shock.

At length, though, he takes note of the conductor in passing and maybe there's some feeling of distant kinship, some sort of parallel in providence, because he watches him for a moment before scrubbing some ash and dried blood off of his face and clearing his throat for attention.

"Beg pardon...I don't suppose you can tell me what sort of afterlife we're headed toward? Only my sister's in one of them and if I'm going to have to fight her I'd like to start preparing for it now." His voice is dryly cynical, but polite at least.

[Ari's terrified. It's not because she's dead. The feeling associated with that fact is anger, and it's one she'll have to process later. It's not fair, when she had so much potential, so much she hadn't done - but that's probability for you. You get to thinking it's never going to be you, even in the heat of battle, because it never has been before. The human mind is good at those kinds of tricks.

No, Ari's afraid because of this ridiculously archaic train, and what it means. She can't say she's in a coma, or that these are the last neurons firing as her life ebbs away, protecting her from whatever agony she'd otherwise be experiencing before she drifts into the black forever. No. Ari has never seen anything like this before. Doesn't that mean it can't be coming from her subconscious mind?

She doesn't sit still. The best thing to do when you're that afraid is to take action, and to focus on others. That's how you hold it all together. It's almost as if she's patrolling that train, back and forth, looking out for anyone who might be alone and need a kind word, a bit of the reassurance Ari herself is craving. She's still in uniform - actually, she's wearing that fancy coat she has for special occasions, and she wasn't wearing that when she died. There's no sign of her wounds, and that's for the best, or she'd be the very opposite of reassuring.

Maybe she'll be able to help someone. Or maybe the constant pacing will just annoy them.]

[Paul is different than the one Ari may have previously encountered. He's older, he has a beard, and there's a sense of exhaustion in him.

His eyesight has been restored, to his clear relief, but there's a bloody stain on his clothes that Ari will see. How exactly he died - a knife to the chest - is fairly obvious.

Paul gives her a sad little smile and passes her a bag of potato chips. This whole scene is surreal for him, too, but he's going to try and appreciate this trip before his spirit goes wherever it's meant to or he fades away. He doesn't know what's going to happen, and that's a strange kind of relief for him rather than fear. He can rest now and that's what matters. There's a flicker of recognition, and he shakes his head.

He feels he deserves what he got. Ari doesn't, and he's sorry to see her here. There's nothing either of them can do now.]

Ari? I'm sorry to see you here.

[This is ...definitely not what he expected. The fact that he doesn't have a mark on him now is something that he knows should be reassuring, but is actually a little distressing, no proof that it worked even though he knows it did, it had to.]

Chrissy doesn't know how long she's been here. She just knows what the staff have told her: sit down, enjoy the food, maybe get to know other folks.

She's coming from the restroom and making her way back to the quarters assigned to her when— ]

[ Xue Yang is likely minding his own business when another passenger quietly approaches from behind. The figure in white takes the seat next to Xue Yang, looking pristine. Exactly the way he did on his final morning, before all of the emotion and bloodshed ruined the rest of the day.

Xiao Xingchen remains wordless after he sits, unsure of how to start the conversation that they surely need to have. His hands are clasped together in his lap tightly, exposing his nervous state. ]

There is no sound when Orym arrives on the train. He is incapable of being anything but quiet and now that he's dead it seems like he's gotten even quieter. He should be looking for Will....for years that's all he thought about. But then the Crown Keepers and Bells Hells had wormed their way into his life and stayed.

So here he was settling himself next to Dorian still looking a bit battered and tired. "Hey," he says preparing himself for the genasi's emotional reaction to him.

[As a goddess, Artemis has a particular relationship with death, in that she actually knows several people down there and heads down on occasion to meet with them - not often, but occasionally - and passes to and fro through the afterlife and back again. Eventually, she'll join them. She knows that everything dies, herself included. And when she does, it'll either be incredibly boring (once again traveling to see her relatives with no escape in sight) or a journey into mystery because her gods are dead and something new has come to replace them.

But that is far later.

For now, here she is, sitting across from a small boy.]

It's really not so bad once you get there. [She normally keeps away from people in general, but for this one she's going to make an exception.] A bit boring after a while, at least if you'd ask me, but there's at least some interesting parts to it.

[The Doctor hadn't expected to survive blowing up floor 507 of the Mondosian ship. But that's not to say he's not surprised to be here. During all his regenerations he remembered the feeling of dying and the horrible pain that was all his cells turning themselves inside out and renewing themselves at the same time. This? Is somewhat pleasant by comparison. Except he's not entirely sure what to do with it. He's never really been at peace in any of his lives.]

[ She knew it was time when she began to forget. The return to Gallifrey wasn't nearly so bitter or terrifying as she thought it might be; she strides in with her head held high and a smile on her face, in true control of her fate.

When she's back there, facing the raven, she remembers fear. Suddenly her heart is beating again, suddenly adrenaline courses like lightning through her veins, suddenly for the first time - in decades, or centuries - she can feel the Doctor's helpless, anguished stare at her back.

"Let me be brave," she whispers to herself, and the raven takes her, and she screams.

Then she wakes up on a train, which is...well, not the most absurd thing that's ever happened to her, frankly. She's just about got her bearings when she sees him, battered and dazed, wild curls and frayed sleeves.

What else can she do but smile for him, one last time? ]

[The tall elf that paces the corridors of the train is still leaving a trail of smoke in his wake looking like he's in a daze.]

[She finds him on accident, a frightened wisp of a girl aimlessly wandering the train like a ghost. Others here have tried to explain things to her. They've tried to make her feel at peace. But the trauma carried over from the way she died hangs heavy over her, doesn't allow her to stop and simply enjoy the train ride for what it is.

The looks of the people who know what happen to people who can't accept the finality of this train ride make her skin crawl. They tell her to calm herself, to sit and talk with them. That the conductor will eject her and she'll be lost to the darkness if she can't find contentment in knowing she's on her way to the afterlife. This only frightens her more, and Chrissy pulls away to do what she wasn't able to do in her final moments.

She runs, hurrying her way through the never ending train cars. Part of her hopes to find the end, a way to escape. It seems like a bad idea, but something about just sitting around here also unsettles her too.

Then she's barging her way through a car where there's just one person inside. She bumps into him as she brushes past, so lost to her own terror that she isn't paying attention. There's a familiarity in the way he feels when she bumps into him though, and it's enough to snap her out of things. Her eyes are wide as her head tips to look up at him, and her lip is already trembling as she knows exactly who this is.]

Eddie? [There's no question it's him.] How did you get here?

He had moped waited in a compartment for a while, until he was steady enough, and restless enough, to make a lap of the car, not quite brave enough to try slipping through the rattling passageway to the next car, not yet, but he knew he'd get restless enough to try that eventually.

Except that on the way back to the seat he'd just left, he caught a familiar flash of green and white, brow furrowing even as he hesitated before knocking lightly on the half-closed door, peering around it curiously, to find that yeah, that was exactly who he'd expected, and he wasn't really sure if finding her there should be a relief or not, and there were so many things that he wanted to say, but all he managed was a quiet: "Hi."
