Which is exactly when, of course, he actually recognizes the man as an Avenger. He freezes, looking for a moment like the human equivalent of buffering video, knowing that it would be painfully obvious that he'd had something to say if he tried to just abort mission and turn back to his own food now. He should definitely not be acting suspicious around a freaking Avenger, considering he's got a firearm he definitely can't legally own tucked into the back of his pants (not to mention a warrant for his arrest with Interpol) right now.

So in for a penny, in for a pound, right? He tries to smooth his initial reaction by pushing through it, because he'd turned around for a reason, damn it! Namely:] You got any syrup at your table? [The syrup bottle at his is completely empty, and while Marc doesn't usually have much of a sweet tooth, the idea of eating pancakes dry without anything on them is just too depressing, even for him.]

He is fast asleep, facedown in his open textbook.]

[ Locked in an observational hover, Finn stands beside the booth completely still aside from the flit of curious eyes moving over Kunimi. There isn't much to see above the table but the line of neck curving into shoulders, curled fingers beside an abandoned pen, and a spill of dark hair spreading across pages like the pooling of ink. It's not much at all. Even so, it's enough to make his heart trip up and then carry on with a new ache in its beat.

The feeling is telling. It hints at an impending effort, a struggle to move on from something that could never be. Of fucking course. He rolls his eyes, more at himself and his own insatiable heart than at the sleeping form whose only crime was being delightful. And beautiful.

Anyway...

With phone in hand, he opens up the conversation that ended at an invite sent to him just minutes ago. After thumbing in: I'm heeeere ❤, he slips into the opposite side of the booth with hopes that Kunimi's phone notification will be enough to wake him.

If it's not, the clinking of cutlery against a plate might do it as Finn helps himself to the neglected crepes. Berry vanilla— cheap and delicious. ]

that au idea we discussed?

[ It was already 1am when they'd met at the gas station this kid was attempting to rob. Did rob, actually. Will clocked what he was doing, checked — he didn't spot the implicit weight of any weapons — and then just carefully watched him do it. The kid had waited til the gas station attendant left, grabbed a small fistful of snacks from the counter, and booked it.

Will had debated it intensely and then followed him, a decision that has not gone smoothly since.

The kid had eaten the snickers on the way over, but maybe the promise of incoming non-pre-packaged food had him shove the rest in his bag on the way there.

(It hadn't been easy, convincing the wary teenager into his car. It had been slightly easier to offer him real food, in a well-lit and public secondary location. Will had watched the way the kid had practically been holding the passenger door handle the entire ride, clearly ready to bolt if Will started driving down a road that looked too abandoned.)

Apparently, this Denny's had passed the muster. Now they're both seated on opposite sides of a booth at just shy of two in the morning. The kid looks just as haggard and exhausted as Will feels. Will hadn't argued when he'd ordered himself a coffee, either — it felt like such a moot point and a useless thing to argue, and while the kid is the stretched-out proportions of an already-skinny child that's turned into a gangly teenager, his age is harder to guess even when Will tries looking for tells. How much experience is in the way the kid checked out the room when they entered? A lot. How are his social skills measuring up, when the waitress asked them for their food orders? They're non-existent.

He's anywhere between thirteen and seventeen, and Will's decided to stop looking any harder than that.

Both of them are silent. There's maybe three other patrons, and at least one is drunk. Will sips at coffee that's objectively terrible but reassuringly hot, and watches the kid watch him back, all with basically no real eye contact.

It's unbearably awkward, and Will's insides keep twisting uncomfortably.

He clears his throat while they wait for their food. ] So.

I told you my name. Did you want to tell me yours?

He's already annoyed the Denny's sole working staff into avoiding his table with excessive small talk, so he has resorted to turning to cheerfully greet anyone who is foolish enough to shuffle themselves into any adjacent table.]

Anything you'd suggest as far as food goes? My knowledge of Earth snacks is hardly very good, but I'm guessing you're a pancake fan at the very least. Haven't had any of those yet.
