He re-links arms with her once he's all set, though.

She's comfortable with the silence, but just as they reach his car, she stands up taller to give him a quick kiss on his cheek before he unlocks it.
no subject
His keys in his hands, he momentarily forgets about unlocking the car, and instead draws her into a proper kiss. On the mouth. Maybe something a bit more intimate?
And then he'll unlock the passenger door and open it for her, holding it open politely until she's inside and situated.

He's just gonna get himself settled on the driver's side and start this baby up. And then take her to his place. Because she seems totally interested. Even though he's internally screaming to abort mission.
no subject
And though she might be comfortable with the silence and she can't hear that internal screaming, the fact that he's gone so long without saying anything is starting to get disconcerting. Or maybe it's her own nerves. Either way, she peers at him from the passenger seat for a moment before asking, "Is everything alright?"
no subject
"Really great."
no subject
Oh. Wait. She hasn't mentioned that part either, has she?
Oh.
"If you don't want me to stay, I don't have to," she says, peering at him. Way to act weird.
no subject
Because that comment makes Dale slam on the brakes.
"Of course I want you to stay!" he counters, putting the car in park and switching on the hazards. "What would make you think otherwise?"
no subject
And then she takes a breath (because she didn't mean to snap at him), and says, "Are you going to tell me what's wrong?"

There are so many things he wants to say, different explanations he wants to give. He can talk about Caroline. Caroline Caroline Caroline. But no - it's too soon for that. But then again - isn't it too soon for this? What they're planning on doing?
Leave it to him to be conflicted.
"It's been a while." He'll just leave it at that. And then he's shutting down momentarily to center himself and get back in the right mindset to start operating a motor vehicle again.

"Okay," she says. Simply. There's not any underlying tones or interpretations or, oh, is that all? that could be construed as belittling him. If anything, it's a better answer than most alternatives.
There's an awkward beat before she closes her eyes and tries not to grimace before she tells him - because it's a little bit necessary: "I've. Um. I never have, so I don't think there's much you need to worry about."
no subject
"Belle, no. Don't be."
no subject
But it quickly changes to a little laugh as she shakes her head and shrugs. Lack of finesse and nerves and all of that are probably taking tolls on her words that she didn't intend. Got it. Wow, complications that she wasn't expecting. "You just - you should know, after all."
no subject
He finds her hand and gives it a brief squeeze. Also - a reassuring smile.
"You still okay with this? I could just bring you back to your place, say goodnight..."
no subject
"I'm the one who asked you and you want to know if I'm alright," she says, laughing and shaking her head. "Yes. I'm fine. Go."
no subject
Forgive him for reclaiming his hand. He needs both of them on the wheel in order to drive in a completely safe fashion.
He might speed, though. Just a bit. To get to his place in a timely manner. But he won't tell if you don't tell.
no subject
Speeding isn't really necessary either, even if it is a pretty nice addition. But - you know what? If she has to lose contact with him for the time being, at least she's getting some lessons in motor safety from it. Plus side to everything. Besides, the quicker he goes, the less time they actually spend in the car. Look at that: multiple plus sides. Wow.
And when they actually do arrive, she manages to play it totally cool, somehow taking her time with leaving the car, and glancing around. Gotta take in the surroundings, after all.
