"Great," he replies, even before she's finished with the question. Not taking his eyes from the road, he gives her a smile. It's pretty nervous-looking. He's nervous.

"Really great."

Okay. Yeah. Nervousness detected and that smile does nothing to mask it. Don't say that she has to be the level-headed one here when this is something completely new to her.

Oh. Wait. She hasn't mentioned that part either, has she?

Oh.

"If you don't want me to stay, I don't have to," she says, peering at him. Way to act weird.

It's a good thing there isn't anyone else on this road.

Because that comment makes Dale slam on the brakes.

"Of course I want you to stay!" he counters, putting the car in park and switching on the hazards. "What would make you think otherwise?"

"Because you're acting so strange!" she comments, eyes widening as she tries to recover from the impact of the whole slamming-on-brakes thing. Almost being thrown through a windshield definitely wasn't in the plans for tonight, but hey.

And then she takes a breath (because she didn't mean to snap at him), and says, "Are you going to tell me what's wrong?"

And this is why, kids, you should always wear your seat belt. Just like Cooper and Belle have done. You never know.

There are so many things he wants to say, different explanations he wants to give. He can talk about Caroline. Caroline Caroline Caroline. But no - it's too soon for that. But then again - isn't it too soon for this? What they're planning on doing?

Leave it to him to be conflicted.

"It's been a while." He'll just leave it at that. And then he's shutting down momentarily to center himself and get back in the right mindset to start operating a motor vehicle again.

Belle just sits there, not frowning, necessarily, but trying to read him. She doesn't interrupt his silence, but she's staring at him, head tilted, until she sits back in her seat and just - shrugs.

"Okay," she says. Simply. There's not any underlying tones or interpretations or, oh, is that all? that could be construed as belittling him. If anything, it's a better answer than most alternatives.

There's an awkward beat before she closes her eyes and tries not to grimace before she tells him - because it's a little bit necessary: "I've. Um. I never have, so I don't think there's much you need to worry about."

"You sound like you're ashamed?" he says, the statement sounding more like a question. He frowns over at her. How could she ever think of feeling ashamed of something like that?

"Belle, no. Don't be."

"I'm not," she says, frowning at him in return before, "And you shouldn't be, either."

But it quickly changes to a little laugh as she shakes her head and shrugs. Lack of finesse and nerves and all of that are probably taking tolls on her words that she didn't intend. Got it. Wow, complications that she wasn't expecting. "You just - you should know, after all."

"Well - thank you. For sharing that with me. Every bit of information helps, right?"

He finds her hand and gives it a brief squeeze. Also - a reassuring smile.

"You still okay with this? I could just bring you back to your place, say goodnight..."

Oh, thanks for that. She's just gonna casually take this opportunity to not let go, despite the fact that he needs to - you know - drive. Have fun with that while she's lacing their fingers together.

"I'm the one who asked you and you want to know if I'm alright," she says, laughing and shaking her head. "Yes. I'm fine. Go."

Hey. As long as she's okay with it.

Forgive him for reclaiming his hand. He needs both of them on the wheel in order to drive in a completely safe fashion.

He might speed, though. Just a bit. To get to his place in a timely manner. But he won't tell if you don't tell.

I mean, it's not like an answer like it's been a while is really going to make her question her motives for the entire night - especially when she doesn't have much of a reason to believe that that's not the whole story. Just saying.

Speeding isn't really necessary either, even if it is a pretty nice addition. But - you know what? If she has to lose contact with him for the time being, at least she's getting some lessons in motor safety from it. Plus side to everything. Besides, the quicker he goes, the less time they actually spend in the car. Look at that: multiple plus sides. Wow.

And when they actually do arrive, she manages to play it totally cool, somehow taking her time with leaving the car, and glancing around. Gotta take in the surroundings, after all.
