Sometimes the hardest things to say are also the most important. It doesn't matter how much it scares you to do so, it's finally time to be honest.

03. I LOVE YOU, BUT... A bittersweet love confession. You know you love this person more than anything, but you're not sure you can give them what they need.

21. HOW COULD YOU You don't understand how they could treat you like they have, do what they have done when you've done nothing but be good to them.

18. That. Works?

[They let him go outside.

He's quiet. He keeps his head down. He stops taking the pills, palms them like she does and starts to feel his own thoughts in his head again. He learns what to say. They smile and bob their heads and take notes on his improvement.

And they start to let him go outside.

It's just the gardens at first. Just afternoons. Then, one day, it's out into the surrounding Town.

He finds a phone. He makes arrangements. His old boss will pay for his cab fare to arrive on her doorstep and start working again.

He catches Alice up against his chest and presses his lips against her temple to whisper.] Listen, okay?

( the protest had turned into a riot, in the same way that two moving objects crash into each other at velocity: violently, and with great force. someone had smashed a window, others had shouted angry words; whether they were truly angry or simply drunk was another question altogether. enjolras doesn't remember being in the thick of it, but he evidently was when the police decided to get involved. when the riot shields had come out, battering back the crowds with an unyielding and insurmountable sturdiness. the pain had been immediate - a blow to the back of the head, the source indiscernible. and when he had awoken hours later on a hospital bed, that image of violence and chaos was long gone, replaced only with sterile white sheets and a sort of fuzziness comparable to an unfocused camera lens.

you were lucky, they tell him, doctors with their kind words. it could have been much worse. and to that, enjolras has two replies:

1. what was I doing at a protest?
2. how much worse could it be, when I don't even remember my own name?

they have only vague assurances for him: memories can return. scent and situation can bring them back, they're holding out hope. they direct him to the best specialists. they tell him that his name is enjolras, that he's studying politics at university. that he's 22 years old and his parents are living in a villa somewhere in europe and couldn't be reached. but they can't tell him what he believes. they can't bring back interests and passions, or anything more than facts on a page. and who is enjolras, when his cause is gone? who is he, when the life he had built was so closely intertwined with those grand, sweeping ideals? tabula rasa. to build such things again is to build them out of sand. but they release him once the head wound is healed and because he requested it, with specific instructions to return every few weeks to consult with specialists.

tabula rasa. perhaps the old philosophers would have been amused.

it's been three weeks since he's set foot outside of a hospital, and when he steps out of the cab at what he's been told is his apartment, enjolras is startled to find somebody already waiting outside the door, like he's been there for hours already. a man, unkempt. around his own age. enjolras stands there on the sidewalk and scans him, but there's no flicker of remembrance there. had he remembered, he might have waved grantaire off, asked him what he wanted, told him that he had no time to waste on his cynicism.

14 - I Need Your Help

There was a point when she just had to give up. She was never giving up on trying to do good in the world, but she was giving up on finding her father, or at least finding him on her own. She always asked after him when she got to a particular planet and sometimes she even heard things. He was traveling with three people, with a little robot dog, with another Time Lord. He was wearing this unusual scarf, a piece of celery, he was carrying an umbrella. All of the stories seemed to have him coming from Gallifrey, although one person he talked to had claimed he was half-human. She didn't really feel half-human, although she didn't know what being human felt like.

She also had names. Nyssa, Tegan, Susan, Jamie, Sarah Jane, the Brigadier, Rose, Rory, Jack. She had so much information that it was almost too much. There were too many leads to follow, but one that she kept finding was that he tended to prefer England when he was on Earth and either London or Cardiff. One of the names she'd learned of, Jack, was based in Cardiff and she wondered if that was a coincidence. She'd found that coincidences like that didn't tend to occur regularly and so she decided that her next stop was Wales.

It wasn't hard to find where he was working once she got there. Cardiff didn't have that much alien technology, although it did have more than she might have thought. It also wasn't hard to get into the place, though she couldn't be sure she hadn't set off an alarm or two. Once she was in, she deliberately set off another few alarms just to get his attention. She had something to talk to him about.
