[Suzaku was a good protector, as far as she could tell, especially towards Nunnally. He always seemed to be the one by her side whenever Lelouch wasn't able to be there.]

[Well, he could have been dancing or something. Not that she was one to talk, being a wallflower most of the evening, only speaking to people she knew, or those that approached her with a friendly, sober face. She steered clear of the early drinkers, especially the more... forward ones.]

S-so long as you don't... follow through with those ideas...

[Even in her inexperience, she could feel him slowing down. It made her feel embarrassed. Really, really should have learned how to dance before the party. She was dancing with the Emperor, after all. Even drunk, some courtiers could still dance better than her.]

[Suzaku was the perfect Knight. He would protect Nunnally and Lelouch trusted him to push him through if he should ever falter. That was the thing about him and Suzaku, they brought out the best and the worst in each other, but they complimented each other well.]

Of course not. I really don't need another international incident.

[He doesn't mind, he'd rather dance with someone he could have a conversation with then one of those women who would be trying to land the new Emperor of Britannia.]

[She took a brief moment to look over her shoulder again, seeing Suzaku and Nunnally, the two engaged in a light-hearted conversation, judging from their faces. It was sweet, to say the least.]

I-if you're sure.

[And, boy, were those ladies giving her the evil eye, especially seeing how... comfortable the two seemed to be with each other. And the fact that Lelouch had only danced with her and his younger sister that evening. This did not bode well with the white-haired girl, feeling those stares.]

C-can I ask you something?

[Lelouch dipped his head once in response.]

Of course, but I can't guarantee an answer.

An honest answer, at least then? [It's a bit of a personal question, one where she's sort of afraid of the answer.

[Lelouch raised an eyebrow. He knew he was a liar, his life had been built on them, starting with his mother's supposed death up until recently.

He didn't want to make a promise to her that he couldn't keep.]

[She is hesitant, since this was a personal question, and she was probably really shallow for even asking this kind of question. She immediately regrets even asking it once it's out of her mouth.]

[Well. That certainly wasn't the question that he had been expecting. And to be honest, he's not entirely sure of the answer to give her. Or what answer he wants to give her.

He was never one that truly understood girls, for the all the times C.C. liked to tease him about looking good in a dress.

And it hits him. He doesn't want to lie to her. The time for lies was over - there was no more Zero, there was no more rebellion. There was peace and a world that needed rebuilding. She was no longer a tool, a means to an end, neither was anyone else.

He had chosen to live, after all. And now he had to actually start doing that.]

You are a friend, certainly. Far more closer then most.

[Of course, all good things must come to an end and the dance was no different. It had been a little fast-paced for her, so being able to rest for a minute was a good thing to her.]

Y-yes, I would like that.

[He nods and as soon as the dance ends, he tucks her arm against his, leading her off the floor and away from prying eyes.

Not that there are many to pry, since most of the people in the room were at least slightly tipsy.]

Just some water should be fine. [Also hasn't tucked arms like this before. She has seen it in movies and a little bit at the ball that evening, where the gentlemen held their arm out and the lady slipped in her arm at the elbows. It was quite sweet, and now that Lelouch was doing the same with her...]

[Well, the dancing did leave her a little flushed. Perhaps she could get away with a blush if her face was already pink.]

[He leads her past the dancing couples and over near a few water bottles that he has stashed to the side. Lelouch knew better then to drink from the water that was set out, especially in case someone Milly tried to spike it.]

[He hands her the bottle after twisting the cap for her.]

[She raised an eyebrow, wondering if it was appropriate to be drinking from a water bottle, of all things, at a fancy gathering like this.]

[Then again, most of what was set out seemed to be alcoholic in nature, and some logic told her that open glasses were likely to be spiked. So having the sealed bottle was comforting, given that little control of much else in her life and alcohol wouldn't help with that at all. She takes the bottle into her hands.]

[At least this way, he could be sure that Milly hadn't gotten her hands on them. And neither had anyone else.

Lelouch had had, after all, his one customary glass of wine at the beginning of the party, to keep up with appearances. But he had never been one for being under the influence of something that would impair him (his rather lousy attempt at Refrain that didn't happen thanks to Kallen notwithstanding) and he didn't want to start now.

He waved off Ryou's question.]

I'm fine. Believe it or not, this is a physical activity I'm used to.

[Lelouch? Used to a physical activity and he's not the least bit winded or anything?]

[Well, color her surprised. She takes a sip of water while looking around at the rest of the room.]

When did you first learn to dance?

It was something all the Emperor's children were expected to learn growing up. After all, we couldn't be an embarrassment to him or the Empire.

[It's said easy enough, even though one who had been around him long enough could probably sense some bitterness there as well.]

Mother was a commoner by birth, a lot of his other wives didn't take to kindly to her or to us, to be honest. I applied myself to everything in our lessons in order to show them that just because we might not be of noble blood, did not make us any less deserving of the "Britannia" name.

Then, she was murdered and Nunnally was injured. Everything changed.

[She was quiet throughout his story, just listening to him talk. She sorry for him and Nunnally losing their mother so cruelly and having the two of them presumably forgotten about and abandoned.]

...I'm sorry to hear that. [She didn't really know what else to say.]

[It was over and done with, wasn't it? He had even confronted the lies that had surrounded his mother's death, his discovery that she was still alive and Geassed what amounted to God to reject their idea of a perfect world.

Something that he knows only C.C. and Suzaku knew and knowledge that he was sure they would both take to their graves.]

It was a long time ago, after all. And it lead to this, did it not?

[He gestures with a hand to the party, to... well, everything. If his father hadn't cast them aside that day, he and Nunnally would never had met Suzaku, and he would never had declared that he was going to destroy Britannia.]

[Yes, it lead to the beginnings of a changing world, where everything was thrown and switched around, it was hard to recognize it as it previously was. Then, Lelouch had met her and the Spirit, which more likely than not turned and changed fates more than either of them had expected.]

It lead to changes for the better, at least.
