I don't know, to be honest. It was rather hard to play most of them while I was blind and now... [She lets her voice trail off with a slight shrug of a shoulder.] Now I'm usually too busy.

I used to fold paper cranes a lot when I was younger, though. Sayoko told us of the legend that when you fold a 1,000 of them, you get to make a wish.

Mhmm. Cranes are one of the holy or mystical animals to the Japanese, like dragons or tortoises. They are said to live for one thousand years, and that's why you fold that many, one for every year of the crane's life.

They're also believed to bring eternal good luck, a long life, or recovery from an injury or illness when folding one thousand of them.

[Nunnally laughs softly.]

That's good, that you got your wish and all. [She won't ask what it was, as it might backfire or something and she certainly didn't want to ruin Nunnally's wish.]

[She smiles, still not wanting to ask as if her asking would put a stop to whatever the wish was, but, knowing Nunnally, it was likely something along the lines of everyone being happy in their lives, or even something silly like world peace. She didn't seem like the kind of person that would use her wishes on herself, not as far as she's seen.]

Do you want to continue practicing some more kana until more people start to show up? [She was beginning to wonder where they all were, especially Lelouch. No doubt there would be some awkwardness between them if they made any sort of eye contact this evening.]

[Speaking of others, Lelouch has arrived, but he's lurking in the doorway like a creeper, watching the two girls talk. He's actually rather pleased to see Ryou interact with someone not himself or Suzaku. Seeing as how he had taken her into the palace after all, he wanted to see her get along with the others, not just forced-upon dress shopping with Milly.]

[Don't be a creeper, Lelouch. Do you know what happens to creepers in anime? She thought about it for a moment or two. She had already written down a few of the basic kanas for her to learn from, and she had already written down what all of their names would be in hiragana, katakana, and kanji. What else could there be?]

How about... some basic everyday vocabulary? Maybe we can make a simple sentence or two?

[She's silent for a long moment, running the sentence over in her mind.

Ah, it means 'princess'. You'll probably be hearing that a lot more than your actual name amongst officials, I think. Otherwise, it'd be Nunnally-san, or even Nunally-chan, in the case of close friends.

What I basically said was: 'Hello, I am Ryou Bakura. It's nice to meet you, Princess Nunnally.' See?

I've heard the other honorifics, but I never heard 'himesama' before.

[Although now she wonders what they would call Lelouch.]

I suppose it makes sense for official functions, but I think I would rather it be less formal otherwise.

We are a formal bunch, I'm afraid. There's even certain words that you would use in place of the regular, everyday casual words. But they're really only used in situations where you really want to show your respect for someone, or to modestly talk about your own actions.

Watakushi no Chichi wa koukogakusha degozaimasu. 'My father is an archaeologist.' It sounds a lot more formal than Watashi no chichi wa koukogakusha desu.

[She nodding, frowning to herself as she committed what Ryou was telling her to memory.]

So then I guess I'll be hearing that a lot.

[At least she thought so, considering her status as a Princess of Britannia and current first in line for the throne.

She tilted her head to look up at Ryou, curious.]

Was English hard to learn for you?

The extra modest expressions, yes. You'll likely be hearing a lot of that, especially in court proceedings, I think. [You always gotta respect your superiors, of course.]

[Though, she took a moment to think about her English learning experience. It wasn't easy, of course, especially having to learn to erase most accent traces of her native language from her English.]

Some parts were hard to learn, yes. Certain pronunciations were hard to remember, like the L and R sounds that I told you about. The grammatical structure is slightly different, with Japanese having the subject first and the verb usually last, whereas it feels it could be mixed any which way in English.

...There are even still times that I will slip in pronunciation on certain words, or even stumble a bit when reading a passage in English, but it doesn't happen very often anymore.

I'm sorry, Ryou. You probably had to learn under less then suitable circumstances.

[It saddened her, knowing what Britannia had put through those who's countries it conquered through. She had heard it first hand during the invasion, lived it even, but that didn't make her any less upset knowing what had been done to others.]

[No, she hadn't learned under favorable circumstances. It's doubtful that anyone had during and after that time. And she really can't say it's okay, that she understands, but it really wasn't okay. Years of forced learning, living a life of fear from two entirely different entities. It was a wonder she kept more than a sliver of sanity.]

Knowing two languages, no matter the circumstances on how I learned the second one, it at least helped to keep me and some others safe in trying times. Overhearing soldiers' plans and boasts, them thinking that I don't understand. Being a Japanese girl supposedly meant that I didn't understand English. And I will be lying if I said I didn't play up that angle... a little. [If only to pass on information to those that really didn't speak English. Sometimes it was better to play dumb than to reveal the truth.]

I sometimes did the same thing. After all, I was not only crippled, but blind as well. For some people, that means you're stupid as well. People would say things all the time and not realize that I could hear them.

You're definitely not stupid, Nunnally-san. Far from it. [Probably a lot smarter than her by a long shot.]

But, I guess, there are times when it is necessary to play dumb, to go along with the perceived image of you, for any number of reasons.

I know I'm not, Ryou, and I know that most didn't think that of me.

[She smiles.]

There are, yes. Certainly no one was going to think me a long dead Princess of the Empire. And it allowed Milly to keep an eye on the plus of Ashford. People gossip about all sorts of things if they think you're stupid and don't understand them.

[It did make her feel sad though, that people would gossip about Nunnally, a girl that was blind and wheelchair-bound. What would they even have to talk about.]

[Maybe Lelouch and Suzaku, she figured, they could gossip about, but not Nunnally.]

Gossip, whisper, boast. One soldier even directly said something to my face when he thought I didn't speak English. It... was a situation that ended rather poorly, I think. [She guesses it ended poorly, because she had blacked out at that point, and she knew what happens whenever she blacks out.]
