[ Snake works too. He's not picky so long as the name or title isn't painting him as some sort of hero, when he isn't. ]

I like Dave, it's a pretty name.

[ Meryl knows well his adversity to being called a hero, and it's okay anyway. She prefers Dave, the human being behind the title. Even when he can be a real piece of work sometimes. ]

not much, I think maybe that´s the problem. what about you? what are you gonna do?

[ Sorry for being such a stick in the mud. Despite that, though, he does keep returning her messages. If that's what she needs to get sleepy... ]

I'm still sorting it out, but at this point I've accepted that retirement isn't really in the cards for me.

[ So how does he manage his work on his own terms? That's the question. ]

[ She is also sure Snake has a mushy side, she heard all about his 'let's enjoy life' and 'caribous are beautiful' talks. She also notices that he is still texting her, so that's nice. ]

that's what I thought. I also want to work on my own terms, especially after seeing what my uncle put you through.

[ Snake doesn't question it. Family's complicated, and sometimes there's no way of untangling yourself from a blood relation. He learned that lesson just recently, in no uncertain terms. ]

There has to be a way. We're not just meant to be other people's pawns.

[ Meryl is glad to not be persuaded into making amends with Campbell. Their family situations are different but she welcomes the unspoken solidarity of having a shared difficult topic. ]

Exactly. I want to help people, I don't know, make some kind of difference out there. But the big fishes control everything in our field.

So we find ways to sneak around them.

[ It's always easier to think of and express these things when speaking to someone else, someone younger and more unsure, rather than doing it in his own head. ]

You think we can do that without it backfiring?

[ Glad to be of any help, and honestly, it's also helping her to be more clear of the path she wants to take. Dave can be a lot of things, not all good things, but he'll always be an inspiration for Meryl. ]

I wouldn't go so far as to say that. The second you think you're safe, that's when the rug gets pulled out from under you.

so then it's about taking risks? measuring what things are worth the risk?

I'd say so, yeah. But it's not like you should take my words as law. And all of this is easier said than done.

i'm not a rookie anymore, Dave. I know that, won't take any words as law, not anymore.

but it's good, to know I'm not the only one thinking these things.

Who knows, maybe someday we'll end up working together again.
