At 300 Fox Way, the tooth fairy and the Easter bunny were debunked early. It was no one's fault as such, but Blue was an inquisitive child, and Maura had an aversion to outright lying to her daughter. A perfect storm, perhaps.

But Blue traded her milk teeth for five dollar bills (a fair exchange rate, she argued, for losing out on the magic of under-the-pillow transactions), and helped her mother shop for her Easter Basket at the rundown Dollar Tree closest to the house.

So it should come as no surprise that when the concept of soulmates was introduced to her, she found it instantly suspicious. Blue is good at disbelief. You have to be, in a house full of psychics. Especially to spend a year convincing yourself that they're just charlatans (despite the clear evidence to the contrary).

Young Blue had a lot of questions. Like who's in charge of sticky note distribution? and what happens if you lose your sticky notes? Then later, when she's older, why should I let a yellow square of paper dictate my love life?

(And privately: if everyone has a soulmate then where's my dad, and why do I live with four women who don't appear to have any soulmates at all?)

At fourteen, Maura hands her a stack of post-it notes (ten, in total) and tells her to make them count. Blue bites down at the tip of her tongue to keep from asking did you?

The first note she ever writes, in thick, defiant sharpie is:

It's the one thing every psychic Blue has ever met agrees on. A fortune so loud it drowns out anything else that might be said about Blue Sargent's future. Tarot cards, tea leaves, crystal balls, scrying bowls, the palm of both her hands all agree: If Blue kisses her true love, he will die.

A dire fortune for anyone.

Blue deals with it much like the tooth fairy and the Easter bunny; she stops believing in love. Plenty of people (the most permanent denizens of 300 Fox Way an immediate example) live very fulfilling lives without having or being a love interest.

So, Blue sticks the remaining nine post-it notes in the back of a drawer in her desk and forgets about them entirely.

Until Gansey. Who infuriates her at first. Who she'd follow to the gates of hell (if hell was real and not just a social construct set in place by Christians to frighten their followers) later. Who smells of mint leaves and old books with the occasional whiff of engine oil.

Her True Love.

The second post-it note she writes is after her fortune comes true. Sitting crosslegged on the floor of her bedroom, the door open to Gansey -- alive again -- sitting on the floor of the hallway outside, back leaned against the wall.

With a blue ballpoint pen, she scrawls a single word across the entirety of the note.

The post-it note equivalent of a shout and Gansey doesn't see it.

They're not soulmates.

It doesn't matter.

Until it does.

Which all leads to this: A lonely back water road, a rundown gas station that looks like nothing as much as a set of a horror movie, and an obnoxiously orange '73 Camaro parked just at the edge of the flickering gas station lights warding off the encroaching darkness.

"Look," Blue tells the cashier inside, bracing both of her hands against the counter and tilting her head back to meet his eyes, "The air machine has eaten five dollars worth of quarters at this point."

The dreamed Camaro -- unlike its original counterpart -- does not break down. There's no engine to service, no gas tank to fill. It runs on dream energy and will until... well, the end of time, probably. But the one thing that's not immune to wear and tear apparently? Its tires.

(Maybe that should be four things. The one currently giving her grief is the front passenger one.)

"It's making the noise, but I don't think any air is actually making it from the hose. My tire's still flat. Actually, it's flatter since I started. I'm out of quarters." And ideas.

There's an air of expectation to her entire being, all five feet of it. Though she won't actually, out loud, ask for help.
