"Uh, kid? Girl?" How do you talk to other people anymore? Jone's pretty sure it's been nine months. Just long enough to have a real fucking lonely baby. (No risk of that, thank God.) "You wanna get outta here?"

The war ends, Jone dies, time goes on, and he stays the same. The world changes, and fades away. Maybe it's his Gods, or the Maker, or something else entirely. Who can tell? One moment you sleep, and the next you're somewhere else.

This world is ruined. There's no other way to describe it. A cataclysm tore though, leaving ruined buildings and fading signs, and a populace that runs from a gigantic armored man. That is, if they're alive. The dead don't run from anything. They clamber forward, mouths open, hungry.

The sun sets on a town that was shitty before everybody died off. Joan has stopped to scavenge for supplies, maybe a place to sleep, but the roar of her truck's engine announces her arrival better than a herald of trumpets. It'll attract the dead, is the thing. Standing on the roof of the truck with a gun and a bow, she waits for the dead to come crawling out. May as well thin the herd before she gets out to look around.

She issues forth a long, shrill whistle when the first of the dead emerge. She loads her gun, some pump action nonsense she found in a crumbling strip mall. "C'mon, you ugly bastards," she says, trying to attract more. "Smile for me."

She aims, and she fires.
