[ this isn't the first time they've crammed into a both at denny's. it isn't like there is much else to do at shadyside. there are only so many times you can hang out at the mall before it starts getting boring so you go to denny's and then that get's boring, rinse, repeat. it's just the two of them right now. simon's at work and she's been losing track of deena these days. she's probably off being angry about something (something being sam). at least simon would actually show up once his shift ended.

it's late - really late. the only other people in the place are old or creepy or both. and it's also summer so it's hot and sticky. the cheap leather of the booth keeps sticking to kate's legs and it's driving her insane. too bad the mall closed early. kate bets sunnyvale's mall is open late, even if malls open late don't really make any sense but fuck it.

speaking of his work, it's splayed all across the table. if you dare to look there's files upon files of background checks on this person or that person and photos galore of pieces of evidence. look too closely and you'll find pictures of the crime scene - a grizzly homicide. the poor woman's met a gruesome end that would shake the average person to their core.

the detective isn't too tired, however, not to notice the prying eyes. he looks up and grunts. ]

[ it's serendipity that has them both in this denny's at god knows what hour.

it's a school night, technically, so he really shouldn't be out so late, but with the recent news of the flag smashers popping up all over social media, he found he couldn't exactly stay still long enough to rest. especially not when the news caught his senses, pinpricks of nerves and signals ringing brightly through his system. it felt wrong. like it was way more than what it was being sold as.

he's on his second cup of coffee in when he spots bucky seated in another booth. has to do a double take, tearing his eyes away from another news article on his phone before squinting in recognition.

while their exchanges may have been brief - he saw him at mister stark's funeral - peter knew exactly who it was. of course he did, remembered the really cool metal arm, remembered fighting beside him after the five year blip. it's convincing enough to make a straight bee-line for him, because if he's learned anything, is to listen to his gut instinct and you know what, maybe steve rogers' friend knew something about this. aaand maybe peter could help.
