[ it's almost absurd the things he doesn't know about the school he's been attending for a few years. like the fact there's a flower shop close to the bookstore. it's a shop he ducks into in an attempt to avoid the group of students heading directly for him since they'd recognize his face and try to lure him into a study session he doesn't particularly want to join. so, shaking off the revelation quickly, he keeps his head down and stares hard at the wall of plants in front of him until it's safe to escape.

but when vie turns around, he runs directly into one of the workers there. ]

I'm sorry. I was just — [ a blink, and vie's expression changes, somewhat surprised as he takes in the other's face. ] You were working at the cafe on campus last night.

[ not that he should know that as extensively as he does, but he hadn't been in the mood to sleep and had spent the late hours at one of the tables avoiding responsibility. that his eyes kept wandering to the figure behind the counter had absolutely nothing to do with anything. ]

How on earth had William Murdoch gotten so unlucky with the newest addition to the dorm-mate? It was already a little like living with one of those cryptids George went on about sometimes.

The young man was 1. Often found up and about at the most odd hours, but always sleeping past 10 in the morning (unless he had a class or work, in which case he was quiet and decidedly grumpy) 2. left a mess of papers, assorted supplies, and coffee mugs wherever he settled. And 3. Seemed to have something against sitting on chairs like any sensible person would. Really, it was absurd, and if one were a little more prone to making wild assumptions, they might almost wonder if a certain someone was right about him.

Today found him sitting on the coffee table, hunched over a book, humming lightly as he traced his fingers down a page with one hand while writing in a notebook with the other. A ring had formed around his coffee mug, but at least the ring was on a pile of notes instead of the table itself. Small blessings, right, Murdoch?

The space though. The space needed to be tidied. Maybe it was time someone... you know... pointed that out?

[ college hadn't been her idea. but everyone had insisted it would be good for her. they lamented that it was what cindy would have wanted. she hates how people use that over her now, it makes cindy's death just as raw as that horrible night. it was a wound that would never heal. no one had listened to her about sarah fier, chalking it up to trauma, to PTSD, to her brain making fake memories because that was the only way it could cope with what happened.

but ziggy knows what happened and she's never doubted it.

so she goes to college, the one that's right outside of fucking sunnyvale. because of course sunnyvale gets a college. even though all she wants is to hide in her dorm or even better go home. then she could hide, maybe get a dog and then maybe she won't be looking over her shoulder, living in constant fear (but she doubts it). sometimes she wishes she died along with cindy. it has to be easier than everything else. it's easier to keep her head down and keep to herself, just like how she finished high school. once the novelty of being the sole survivor of a massacre wears off people mostly leave you alone. which suits her just fine.

until it's time for a group project. and she's paired off with nick of all people.
