( castmates and cross-canon welcome, mostly interested in a more gen scenario and building cr from there. given that he's a wandering traveler, he's likely to end up crashing with anyone that is willing to house him for a night. other traveling companions, other skilled fighters, or for a more juxtaposed scenario with someone who is neither of those things, I'm open to anything. if you would like a starter, simply ask. )

[ that the abyss herald was unexpected is an understatement; that two of them were unexpected is insufficient in explanation.

they defeat them even so.

the part they are least equipped for happens afterward when visiting one of the statues of seven reveals the cut deep through aether's back: unhealed. kazuha even cooks for them despite his exhaustion, despite aether's insistence that he doesn't need to, that what both of them could do well with is, frankly, rest. but they are both stubborn in their own ways perhaps and so the cooking is done and aether eats it with a soft thank-you before they both collapse into one of the beds at wangshu inn. aether has helped often enough with commissions and unofficial tasks, that verr goldet gives them a substantial room without question and after a worried look at both of them, kindly indicates to aether that he can consider this payment for the next time he helps them. aether, too grateful to argue it in case of there being an imbalance, just nods.

the bed is big enough for two but not so big that there is extra space.

aether dreams of his sister's sad expression and the fondness still apparent even in her distance and mystery and otherness. aether dreams too that they are on switched sides, but somehow the story is very different then; they are twins but they are very separate people, come to that. one protagonist is not, one might say, the same as the other even if they are equal. in any case, it keeps him deeper and underneath than he might otherwise have with the pain that does indeed eventually wake him. he makes the mistake of sitting too abruptly, feeling the bed wet and partially stuck against his back where the blood has mostly dried.

the sound he makes is soft, head lowered, hair freed from its usual braid and considerably messy, thick and all over the place and longer now that it's completely down. in their travels, it was always lumine who braided it for him, tucked a flower behind aether's ear or a crown on his head like a prince of the stars. those days seem a lifetime apart from where he is now; and it's strange. he tries to stay quiet, not wanting to wake kazuha if possible, unsticking his side of the sheet from his back and slowly shifting his legs off the side of the bed, but he does not try to stand just yet. one hand goes to his head, dizzy, sick feeling. but that might be from waking up too fast; he knows. better not to assume the worst even with how this injury already sort of suggests it in and of itself.

the room being rather large, the bed is in one space, and a folding screen with dancing peonies divides this portion from an area where a bath sits somehow magicked or engineered to produce quite hot water at the press of a lever. there is a small wooden stool at its side, a wash bucket, soap, and aught else one might need for bathing. on a separate vanity made of red cedar, as if verr goldet knew they might descend on the establishment last night: an array of balms and medicines and painkillers curated from baizhu himself. too generous. aether will insist on paying her later once he realizes all of this is here.

for now, not realizing, still groggy and honestly strange feeling, he uses his focus on simply staying sitting a bit hunched over on his side of the bed, the sheet he'd peeled off of himself clutched in his other hand, the blood darkened to that rustier color. he feels bad, doesn't want to worry kazuha who keeps so much to himself -- a thing aether respects and does not seek to demand he change -- that the least aether can do is not add to anything that worries or weighs on him. each individual has his or her or their own story to carry, and maybe it is their own lot: that each wants to help or finds oneself drawn to someone else, as if to say "this story should not only be mine", but where the line is drawn becomes increasingly hard to tell. what is help and what is too much? in their brief travels together so-far, aether finds he likes kazuha's subtle polarity, his softness as well as his directness. paimon once said that that's like aether too, but he's never really thought of himself that way.

kazuha feels very far away and quietly close all at once; the wind, fingering through one's hair and yet the other side of it could be world's apart.

it feels almost familiar and aether doesn't know why. ]

(one golden eye cracks open to an unfamiliar room. geeze, it must've been a wild night given ryoko can't exactly recall where she is or how she got here but there are a few things immediately obvious: one, she's naked and two: there's the weight of a muscular arm draped over her middle. she can feel the steady breathe on her neck---he must still be asleep. there's a few flashes of memories, and good ones. so much so that rather than wiggling out from his arm and making herself scarce, she shifts to jog her memory with a look at his face. ooo, handsome. rugged. she picked a good one, apparently.)
