He's cute. That's Ayla's first impression of the pale tiefling monk she's been traveling with for the better part of a year, and the young half elven woman still thinks as much even after she's seen him fight (cute and dangerous then), but she doesn't entertain the idea of anything romantic until much later when she's grown to trust him and count him as a friend.

He makes her feel safe, and that's a startling realization for Ayla, who can count on one hand the people she really trusts. Growing up in Calimport's high society, socializing with the company her mother kept was like tiptoeing through a pit of vipers, and she learned early to guard herself against fast friends who would slip a knife between your shoulder blades the second they stood to gain from it.

Perhaps part of the reason she's become so fond of her traveling companion is that he's the opposite of that. There's nothing ostentatious about her traveling companion, despite his striking looks, and she's never known him to be insincere. Maybe it's the result of fighting so many battles together. Ayla has lost count of how many times he's stepped in to save her or how often she's tended to his wounds in the aftermath. Or maybe she's just had one too many glasses of wine, but what begins as innocent flirtation (not out of character for her by any stretch of the imagination) turns into something more heated that night, and when she reads something like interest in Verity's blue eyes, it's only a matter of time before she has him where she wants him, alone, in her room, on her bed... albeit only sitting on the edge of it for now.

Ayla knows how the read a room, and she slows when she gets the impression that she's making Verity nervous, easing back to look him in the eye, which is frankly a lot easier with him sitting down. She'd be face to face with his chest if he was standing. The phrase 'climb him like a tree' comes to mind, and Ayla banishes it, taking both of his hands in hers.

"Am I making you uncomfortable? We can stop this here if you are. If I'm misreading things..."

Gods, she hopes she isn't. She could deal with the embarrassment, but he's too precious a friend to risk losing.

There isn't much about Verity that most would consider particularly inviting. He tends to be closed off, quiet. Rarely ever rude, but just not the sort of person that encouraged conversation.

But... Ayla is nice.

And maybe when she started flirting, he tried flirting back, even if he's never sure he's saying the right things. He must have said something right, though, because he finds himself sitting on the edge of a bed - Ayla's bed - with the half-elf looking at him rather intently. Verity glances down when she takes his hands.

"Oh... no, uhm." This was not a conversation he ever really anticipated having. A bit of heat creeps into Verity's face, and he knows his pale look makes it very obvious.

"No, you aren't misreading. But." It's never bothered him before, but now it feels somewhat embarrassing to admit. "I've... never really done this before."
