[ Seduction hadn't been part of the plan, to say the least.

Not that Childe would call it that anyway. Cat and mouse is how he lives his life - and he's been both sides of that equation. If he teased Xingqiu when they first met, when the Traveler's little Guhua geek friend had turned up his nose at working with a dreaded Fatui agent, that was because that was just how Childe interacts with the world.

And if, upon seeing the way Xingqiu looked reluctant and then impressed afterwards, even grateful, to realize that this particular Fatui agent had kept his word and helped out on this secretive commission, Childe had pinched his cheek like he was teasing a younger sibling and told him 'looks like we get along pretty well then, bookworm', well. That was still just par for the course for him.

It's not his fault that he gradually picked up on the way Xingqiu's gaze would occasionally linger - not even anywhere obscene, just on his shoulders, his throat, his lips. It's surely not Childe's fault that his constant soft cajoling, teasing, flirtations all actually go somewhere in this kid's head, because it so rarely does. No one seriously pursues someone like Childe - flashy, dangerous, carved from ice and shipped out to go kill a god in a foreign land.

The sparring sessions, the fight lessons - those take a bit of a hit when, well. The whole Exuvia thing happens. Xingqiu's an upstanding citizen, he's got morals, little weights he ties to himself to get stronger in other ways that Childe's never really cared about - he isn't thrilled, to say the least. Lumine hardly says a word in his defense, although to his surprise, he finds out later that Rex Lapis (sorry, Zhongli) of all people puts in a good word for him with Xingqiu. And isn't that a funny thing, to think that the god Childe was sent to murder would encourage some seventeen year old aristocrat to keep taking sword-fighting lessons from one of the Fatui?

It doesn't even matter that Xingqiu refuses Childe's first and second invitations to a new lesson. In the end, that doesn't matter.

Because a pathway to the Abyss opens up in the rock out by the ocean, and all the Adventurer's Guild won't shut up about it, and Childe can't breathe when he's first told it's there - because he's excited, because he's terrified, because he's absolutely going to dive in.

He meets Xingqiu at the entrance, and fate takes care of the rest. After all:

'I can't just let you wander around in there on your own, before I've finished all your lessons, can I?'

They're back to back and Childe is at once impressed by Xingqiu - he tells him as much, laughing - and feeling himself fray at the edges with excitement. Down here, in the cold maw of the Abyss, his other form, his natural living weapon, feels closer than it ever does. How easy will it be to reach, down here? How much of Childe was already crawling with little Abyss particles, and how many will cling to him after they're done clearing as many layers as Xingqiu can manage to keep up during?

Xingqiu falls at one point - barely even his fault, with this kind of terrain - and Childe reaches out to catch him, instinctive as breathing. ] Careful, [ he says, and he means it, keeps his hands on Xingqiu even after he's righted himself. ] I don't want to walk out of here alone.

[ And if seeing Xingqiu like this - chest heaving, perfect hair finally out of place enough to stick to his temples and forehead in thin little strands - is another one of many times that Childe has looked at Xingqiu and felt a rushing, possessive heat low in his gut, well.

He won't say anything, just yet. He'll keep them fighting back to back, he'll figure out all sorts of excuses to initiate a supportive or encouraging grip, but...

Childe's first skill was being a fisherman, after all. He can sate his impatient bloodlust with the endless monsters the Abyss provides. With Xingqiu...maybe he can be a little patient. (He can try, anyway, with the way the black pit he swallowed years ago keeps bubbling up under his skin.)

Childe brushes one of those loose strands away, tucks it back along with its brethren with a touch that's too caring and measured to be from the hand that just dealt the final blow to the Abyss Lector they just finished off. ] Can you keep up?

( to ascend one's rank in the practice of Guhua to the tier of masters, a disciple must make a trek into the wilderness to seek 'counsel of clarity' — to be separated from the swaying scales that humanity rests its judgements upon and muse over what their core principles are amidst the neutral and chaotic reality of the wilds. influenced by no other mortal man's selfish heart, the disciple must face himself alone to decide what it is, to him, that constitutes right and wrong, good and evil. if it really were so clear-cut of a decision, such a ritual would not be carried out by each man or woman that seeks to attain mastery in Guhua; it would be a given, something one could teach to another, as if it were a simple answer.

the answer is not simple; the question itself has created wars, hardly a result that leads to a resolution that all walk away agreeing upon.

Xingqiu has always served the people around him, his cause dedicated to the community in which he shares...though he has internalized easily and early that men are not all good, and creatures are not all evil. still, his focus and dedication has been on the people, familiar faces, unknown ones — and he sets out on a musing trek through Liyue to reach the sacred grounds of Jueyun Karst. this path is equally as important as the destination; the true test is what he will encounter, and how he will resolve himself on this path to personal enlightenment.

dragon abodes are more elusive and sacred than lands ruled by adepti; many auspicious figures through the history and culture of Liyue are scarcely seen, and rarer than that is the knowledge of the grounds in which they call home. some don't even keep grounds at all — with the ability and fierce intelligence to engineer incredible things, some remain in hidden realms, and skyward places...

but there are rumors passed from historians to treasure hunters, and moreover, Xingqiu has noted over the years of reading various versions of myths and legends about their supreme overseers that...some things detailed seem to too frequently align together. like a poem rhymes, he has read curious things that all seemed to echo one another. points of interest, described in romantic verse that if dissected...don't sound quite so fictional.

he encountered an unexpected issue in Tianqiu Valley after beginning south in Lingju Pass; the detour forced Xingqiu through Nantianmen instead. he has a journal quickly filling with all of his musings as he treks through the land, the encounters he has been accruing, legible to hardly anyone in the world aside from his family, their business, and elite members of the Guhua clan.

he climbs Qingyun Peak in focused solitude for a patient stretch of some hours; Xingqiu thinks of how he will pick fresh Qingxin, if he can spot them on these high peaks. the sun is direct once he's ascended past the level layer of clouds, and the stone of the mountains begin to swirl as if carved by hand. crests of stone glow in sunset amber to the west, but Xingqiu's eyes stray east. adepti shrines are clustered here between the nearby mountains, but this finally overlaps with Jueyun, home of Taishan Mansion, 'the trial of earth.'

as he glides down into the direction of Jueyun Karst finally, Xingqiu spots a peak with a sprouting of Qingxin crowning its top. it's barely a diversion to make, and he descends to drop down onto the boulderous tower jutting up from the earth, careful not to crush it under his feet as he sticks his landing. reverent and relieved, he scoops down to pluck the plant off of the rock that it has taken root to, peeling it carefully from the stone.

there's a crackling sound that booms through the air, stampedes through the stone Xingqiu is knelt upon — thunder, or perhaps an earthquake? Xingqiu goes from knees onto his hands, grasping onto the peak as he feels the air press against him...or, more accurately, rush over him like a fervent wave.

the sunlight, beaming as it has been all day, is suddenly cut out; as wind and dirt brush against his face and through his hair, Xingqiu squints and blocks what he can with a hand while still looking up to the sky to see what has just appeared—

and he finds the silhouette of a great creature slicing though the sky, a long shape armored in scales with a great mane drifting gratuitously down its skull.

eyes round, Xingqiu rises up, to his knees and soon his feet. is it possible — has he just seen...?
