The Train to the Afterlife Meme

Congratulations: You are dead.

Maybe you know how, maybe you don't. Perhaps the memory is fuzzy, or perhaps it's crystal clear down to the look in your comrades' eyes. Maybe it was your time; you've done all you wanted to. Or maybe you weren't at all ready to go, maybe you went out kicking and screaming - but none of it matters. You know you're dead, and the train is taking you to an afterlife. Perhaps an afterlife of your choice; you might've earned that heaven. Or perhaps you've earned something else entirely.

It'll be a bit of a journey, though, so you might as well take your time and talk to the other people in your coach. Death knows no place: most of them are strangers, even from faraway worlds. But death knows no time either, so who knows, some of them may be people you know, even if last you knew, they were alive - or long gone.

Oh look, here comes the snack cart.

All the usual:

• Post with your character's name and canon in the subject line.
• Said character is now dead for whatever reason - canon, AU, what have you. They are on a train with other dead people from many other times, places and worlds.
• Characters don't know for a fact where they're headed - just a general awareness that they're going to some kind of afterlife. Whatever they think it is is up to the player.

And yet, in spite of it, it's nice to see a familiar face given the circumstances. Kokichi even plops down in a seat just a few down from where he's sat, and Kokichi is all smiles. ]

[ It's almost embarrassing, how Kylo Ren dies. With no place in the order, he flees with the knowledge that would turn the tides of the war for the Resistance. Not out of loyalty to his mother, or the want to do good. Payback to his own for turning on him.

That's what he tells himself, anyways.

It's easier to tell himself than to admit that Rey had been right. About everything, and that everything that he'd told himself over the last six years, that there was no light left to him was a lie he'd been foolish and lost enough to believe...

Maybe he should've told them he was coming. Or waited till she was on base. He wouldn't have been shot out of the sky by an attack that not even his ace piloting skills could've saved him from. Several shots to the engines, there's no time to eject and his attempts to slow the trajectory are a moment too late.

The ground rushes up to meet him, as he clutches a small trinket in his pocket and then there's nothing...

... until now. Leaving Kylo sitting in a compartment that looked like the cockpit of a familiar ship, staring out at the landscape as it flies by. Did they find his body and parade it in mockery? The scourge to the galaxy dead at last, or did the First Order prevail with Hux at its head? What about his mother? About Rey? Were they the lone mourners in a sea of celebration? The door opens and he doesn't even look up so lost in thoughts.

Dying hasn't changed his temperament; Kylo's hands clench into a fist in his lap. ]

hades likes order, he likes things to be neat and tidy and organized. everyone on the train has a ticket - no need to purchase, it just happens - and he makes a point to go from compartment to compartment to check. the ticket has basic information: name, birthdate, and the time, place, and cause of death. he always copies it down into his ledger for later bookkeeping and judgement, and moves on.

it's a good system: partially automated so he doesn't do all of the work himself, but he still has the opportunity to personally ensure things are going to plan. nobody slips past him anymore, nobody escapes the census.

[It isn't ideal, but it's going to be fine.

If he'd been asked a few years before this exact moment, the idea of it ending this way wouldn't have been the faintest flicker in the back of his mind. If he'd been allowed to choose, there would have been quite a bit more pizzazz, a chance for proper goodbyes, and the sort of brilliant flash that people would go on about for years and years into the future.

Tonight, it isn't ideal, but James can't imagine anything in the world more worthy of dying for than giving Lily and Harry time.

It puts something oddly peaceful into his bones as the pain vanishes into a low, rocking sensation. A blink, and the blinding light of his death resolves into a train, unfamiliar but not unsettling. A breath, and he shifts back in his seat, hands lifting to push back his glasses and rub his the heels of his palms absently against his eyes.

More time would have been much better. More certainty that the brief distraction had helped would be slightly better. Still, as he pulls himself up to his feet (strange, to feel almost as if he doesn't have a body and simultaneously the need to stretch), James can cling to the infinitely calming truth that this had all been for something--for incredibly important someones.

It isn't ideal, but when his wife and son join him (years from now, a lifetime from now, Lily with stories to tide him over until he can properly meet the boy she'll have raised into a man), it will all have been infinitely worth the sacrifice. He's been learning to be properly patient.

He can wait.]

This was the last place he ever wanted to be. He had hung on for years in a desolate wasteland with his only hope being to save his siblings. To be so close, only to lose in end was the biggest blow. However nothing could really prepare him to see any of his siblings after failing them so spectacularly yet again. Especially now that he had run out of any chances to change things.

So the moment his eyes fell on Rey, he felt as though he had been punched in the gut. Funny how one could still feel like they are suffocating despite being dead already. Quietly he closed the distance between them as he slide into the seat across from hers. He hadn't seen the others yet, but it seemed fitting that Rey be the first one he bumped into on this strange ride.

"I'm so sorry, Rey..." He said, barely able to make eye contact with her.

(Castiel's only direction from Jack was that he was to be on this train on today's date but he looked rather shifty when Cas tried to question him as to why. Castiel wanted to send someone else as he had work to do but Jack had insisted.

Castiel never denied Jack anything, if it was within his power to do something about it. So Cas opened doors, as quietly as he could a gentle smile on his face. )

It will be fine, everything will be fine... just enjoy the ride.

The last thing Jin Guangyao remembered was being hoisted in the air by Nie Mingjue's corpse, pushing Lan Xichen out of the way before having his neck snapped. He saw the horror on their faces as he was lifted. He cursed at the corpse, and he died. But this death was his choice at least.

He didn't know what the big thing he was on now was, it was just some sort of moving transport. His chest was bleeding from his wound, his right hand missing. He pressed his face against the glass of the moving vehicle, looking numb.

He didn't even look up at the person next to him. "Do you know where we are headed?"
