Some more bleeding hearts would feel sorry for the latter, but make no mistake, they're little more than lab rats. They are not to be pitied. Emotion shouldn't even be wasted on them. Especially not an emotion as messy and useless in and of itself as romantic love. Why, you wouldn't want to jeopardize the breakthrough of the ages on account of some fairy tale, would you? Besides, it would be the most unfulfilling of relationships, for you could never be with your beloved test subject. Unless. Unless you broke them out. Such an action would be highly illogical and, more importantly, met with severe punishment. Are they worth all that? How to Play - Your character is either some sort of test subject/creature/weapon/misunderstood and otherwise tortured prisoner of science OR an outside party (scientist, doctor, janitor, visitor, journalist, sky's the limit). They meet their opposite. They fall in love. Bad Shit happens. Nobody's happy. - Comment with your character, preferences, role, info, all the good stuff. - Reply to others. - Be tragic and miserable together.

[Phoenix is probably the pride and joy of the institute. A merman who, when dry, can walk on land like any other man, but then develops a brilliant blue fishtail, the kind of blue that no one has quite been able to replicate with paint or pigment. They know he can talk because he told them his name when they first brought him in, but as he refused to answer questions about the whereabouts of others like him, the torture started and he stopped talking entirely.

Now Phoenix sits at the bottom of a tank that's clearly too small for him with water that is clearly not the quality he needs. The scales that haven't been torn off his tail for testing purposes are growing ashy and peeling, his face gray and ashen. Even as a merman, he looks human enough to see that he's utterly miserable, but the scientists don't seem to care as they continue to poke and prod him and try to get him to talk again.

The only person he seems to have a soft spot for is the new security guard, and the scientists theorize it's just because he's interested in new faces. His eyes brighten when the man comes into the room, his finned ears twitching when he speaks, but he doesn't talk. At least, he doesn't talk when anyone else is around.]

They call it an observation room.

It's true in as much as there's a glass partition along the back wall, beyond which is a row of old desks drudged up from a basement somewhere so that there would indeed be somewhere for people to sit and observe. They're clearly an afterthought, stacked into the room messily and in a hurry, the kind you'd find lining the polished floor of a school's gymnasium during a final's week. They're hardly fit for purpose considering what's being contained in the room into which they're now facing.

They call it an observation room but it could more accurately be called a cage. Aside from the long glass window, inches thick, the rest of the walls are a block of solid unpainted concrete. There's only a single exit, a heavy steel door that locks from the outside with a sliding hatch to allow for more faces to peer inside. The buzzing tube of a fluorescent bulb lies flush against the ceiling, the only source of light except for a modern LED ring light that stands at the ready in a far corner, the breaks of its rolling wheels clipped into place. Against the furthest wall is a medical trolley, as sterile as the rest of the room, lined with a polished tray of small, exacting instruments. Finally, positioned in the center, able to be seen from all angles, is a narrow stretcher.

And there's something lying across it.

It isn't human. It can't be. No human could have survived whatever's happened to it and, even from behind the thick glass of the observation window, it's obvious that it is indeed breathing. Its chest expands and contracts in a steady rhythm, somehow emphasizing the unnatural concave of its stomach, the jutting of its hipbones through what appears to be raw, naked muscle. It looks as though it's been flayed alive, like its skin has been peeled back to reveal every nerve and tendon underneath. But there doesn't seem to be any blood, nothing pooling onto the table its lying across, none flooding over the lip of it to drip onto the floor. Its whole body is a wound, scabbed over and scarred.

And, aside from the shallow rise and fall of its chest, it doesn't move. Above its head hangs a bag of clear liquid, leading down an IV line to the back of one of its hands, which are curled loosely at its sides, weighed down by heavyset chains and whatever drugs are in its system. Its ankles are similarly restrained, bolted to the legs of the stretcher and out of its reach if it were ever to rouse enough to attempt to free itself.

They call it an observation room but its more of a torture chamber.

[ doesn't need to be ship/i'd prefer it's more a platonic affection or concern that's spurring this jail break attempt, at least at first til it can evolve in-thread. permissions/info in journal but the gist is razor was literally raised by wolves and could easily be the experiment/monster, captured by hunters or social scientists, etc.

razor can also be the 'human' for something more inhuman than a boy raised by wolves (whether literally or figuratively) - he's helpful and kind and would likely pity and try to break out something that appeared dangerous but wasn't aggressive/was aggressive only bc they were injured, etc. would just really love to explore some different worlds bonding. ]

[ there'd been a point in time where keith did not think life could get much worse than a literal alien invasion. as it turns out, the universe is ready to prove to keith that there's always a lower place to fall. what had started as a simple reconnaissance and extraction mission had ended on a confusing note when the galra drones set to shoot on detection hadn't actually done as programmed. or rather, it shot at everything but keith.

whatever the reason for that might have been, it could've just stayed a mystery. instead, griffin had gone and reported it to the top brass in his mission debriefing. next thing keith knew, he was being hauled off to an isolation unit for some diagnostic tests. that'd been weeks ago already. weeks of interrogations, accusations about being a galra spy, forced blood draws, biopsies, restraints and involuntary sedation have driven keith over the edge, ready to lash out and just about everything and anything.

when the door to his slides open, keith bristles immediately. the garrison medics know by now not to leave him unrestrained when he's alone., but it doesn't stop from outright thrasing, oulling at eh straps keeping him pinned tight against the bed. ]
