( escorting the queen ends up being some dull work, as far as anakin is concerned. not that her company is boring, but he has to admit there is a definite lack of immediate threats around for him to take the joy in unhanding. ( literally, of course. ) he imagined his bodyguard duties to be a bit more ripe with danger, dastardly plans to sweep the queen of her feet by being, in all senses of the word, her knight in jedi robes. instead, he takes up the grateful space behind her in an open market, biting back the urge to yawn.

the view's not bad. obviously. that's not the problem. the force gifted him with power tenfold, but it forgot to give him the ease and grace of easy conversation. if given the opportunity, he'll undoubtedly say something foolish. i hate sand comes to mind. if padmé wasn't quite so lovely, he thinks he'd maybe have an easier time with it. instead, anytime he thinks to say something, he sound of her laughter leaves him tongue tied, flustered.

he doesn't think he's ever been flustered before. it annoys him, boyishly. why does she have to be so pretty?

there rises an opportunity, however. keeping a low profile as they are, padmé wanders the market without her rich, naboo clothes, her hair flowing instead of in traditional brains. it means when a mon calamari seller surges up to her, sneaking a greasy hand around her waist and blubbered lips to her ear, he has no idea who he's really messing with.

there is a jedi way to deal with this. it involves decapitation with a lightsaber — generally, a favorable outcome to anakin. however, he clearly always likes to walk the road less traveled, and so there is an anakin solution as well, surging up behind padmé and pulling her small form back against the thick of his chest, away from the seller. possessively, he holds her, metal arm strong around her waist. )

Hands off my wife or you'll lose them, snake. ( bending down, he coyly presses a kiss to her temple. ) Darling, should I hurt him for you?

( there are so many degrees of wrong to this: wrong in the sense that it's a lie, wrong in the sense that it plays too closely to things that he thought, once, julian might want from him, an impossibility that he knew, from the moment they fell into bed together, with the sheets twisted up around them, and wrong in the sense that it shouldn't even be something they have to pretend at, in order to do this. in his mind, lucio should really be ejected from the palace, from vesuvia, from the whole realm, if he could make it happen; but there are people here who believe less in the virtue of well-meant grudges and more in the pesky perversion of forgiveness, and he's fought it every step of the way. both him and nadia are in agreement, but there are laws that they can't get around--laws they're working on trying to undermine, but it takes time, and at the very least, yes, asra has time. he has the limited patience, at least, to see this much through: but in the meantime, there's trouble to keep his eyes on, and part of that trouble is this stupid party.

so he's fidgeting at the entrance of the palace, fidgeting and adjusting the weight of the ring on his finger, twisting it anxiously between his other fingertips. it's hard to not rip it off entirely; marriage is terrifying, goes against all of his instincts, and means that he can't just--bolt, which sometimes is his only method of dealing with things at all. )
