It'd sounded like a quick and easy job. A young family, a new home purchased, and something rattling the windows and scaring the kids and making all kinds of trouble. Wei Ying knew ghosts long before he became a cultivator, and at least on paper, this was a straightforward case of di fu ling, bound to the house and clearly displeased that its routine had been disrupted. It was, definitely, not the kind of thing the Cultivator's Association typically called him for - his specialty was the dirty work and solutions that were flagrantly unorthodox and sometimes unethical - and really, that should have been his first clue. Meeting the family at the scene and finding out that their five year old had all but stopped speaking since they requested the Association's help was the second.

Three days and a complex haunting and case of complete possession later, Wei Ying was strung out and tired. The possessions with kids were always the worst ones, and the spirit just hadn't wanted to let go. He was like her dead brother, she'd said. Wei Ying couldn't even convince her she was dead. In the end, he'd had to fight her, had to use her own yin energy to break her down. But she'd sank her her claws deep into the little boy's consciousness, and extricating her from him was delicate and dangerous work. And even then, he'd--

Well, it was over, and the kid was in stable condition. Wei Ying reminded himself of this as he wandered through the streets in the cold winter air, hardly aware of his surroundings. His back and shoulders were wound up tight and there was a constant buzz of static in the background of his thoughts. He should go home. He knew he should go home. But he found himself on the other side of town and in front of Lan Zhan's apartment complex as if pulled by an invisible thread. It was far from the first time, and he really, really needed to stop bothering the other man like this - there was nothing for Lan Zhan to gain from associating with someone like him, after all. But Wei Ying couldn't make himself stay away, and Lan Zhan had claimed to not mind.

At least for now, his traitorous mind supplied. Wei Ying shook the thought off and pulled out his phone, ran his thumb over the cracked screen. It was getting late, and he knew Lan Zhan usually went to bed early. Wei Ying should have gone home.

He sucked in a shaky breath.
