Maybe you remember how you died, maybe you don't. But you're in the afterlife, and as a reward for behaving virtuously on Earth, you've made it to The Good Place - otherwise known as heaven.

Anything's possible here in paradise: human flight, pet dragons, ice cream shops with 5000 flavors. The scenery is gorgeous, and you live in the house of your dreams - and you've even been given someone to share it with: your very own soulmate, chosen for you by an algorithm. The matchmaking system is flawless, which means your soulmate is perfect for you. They're everything you could want, and you're 100% compatible.

Unless there's been a huge mistake. Because this person can't really be your soulmate ... can they?
 

HOW TO PLAY:

• Post with your character and state your preferences.
• Whoever tags you is your character's soulmate in the afterlife. This means they share a house together, and they're expected to live like a couple. What else it means is up to you.
• There are still ways to play this meme if your character isn't virtuous enough to get into the Good Place. Maybe there was a mix-up and they got admitted under someone else's identity. Or maybe they were just told they made it to The Good Place, and they're actually stuck in hell - which might explain why their "soulmate" is someone they can't stand. Don't be afraid to get creative!

[ Adeline isn't sure how much time passed after she told Maria goodbye and walked away. Nor is sure how long she cried for before she blankly begin staring out at the nothingness beyond the window. She must have fallen asleep at some point, wishing that she and Maria could have simply held their silence instead of trying to speak.

She never wanted to walk away. She never wanted to say goodbye. Their lives were over and there wasn't even the possibility that they would see each other again after this, so why not just remember the good times? Why couldn't they have done that?

Adeline wakes up with a start, her eyes still wet with tears slowly opening to the sound of someone calling her name. There's light outside the window, as though dawn had just broken after an endless night. Before she can really get a good look, her name is called again and she turns her attention to the stewardess. She tells her that this is her stop if she's ready.

With nothing more left on this train (nothing more that she can salvage, that is), she nods and gets up, walking almost blindly down the aisle and barely offering the stewardess a smile before she steps off of the train. She hears her wish her well before the doors close behind her. There's a huff of steam further up and after another few moments, it takes off down the tracks.

She doesn't look back. Because what if she catches one last glimpse of Maria? She isn't sure that she could bear it. Instead, she takes in a shuddered breath and starts walking, slowly at first and then she breaks into a run. Whatever afterlife this is, she can't enjoy its beauty. She can't enjoy the sun on her face and the sounds of birds. She can't enjoy the flowers and trees and lack of walls and gates confining her.

Her foot finally catches on a hole on the ground and she falls forward, barely catching herself on her hands and knees, completely out of breath and sobbing all over again. She slowly gets up onto her knees and pulls off her gloves before wiping the tears from her face. Through her blurry vision, she spots the large flowers that tower over her, lightly shaking in the breeze.

There are a lot of them here, actually. An entirely field that stretches before her. They're reminiscent of the lumenflowers, but so much brighter. Sniffling softly, she rubs a few more tears from her eyes and scoots forward to one of the smaller flowers and takes it into her hands, her thumbs brushing over it's petals as she gazes into it's center.

Maria would have loved these. ]
