There aren't many things Bennet hates more than machines these days, but treachery is one of them. Bad enough that the entirety of North America is overrun with Sentinels hunting for anyone that isn't a baseline normal human, but apparently there are still fools who think it's a good idea for "others" to fight amongst themselves. And it's not as if mutants and werewolves even have the excuse of bad blood that some of the other peoples have. There was no excuse for the three cocky enforcers to attack him, except that he was alone and tired and they thought he'd be an easy kill.

Now wet gravel squelches under his feet as he marches back to the abandoned gas station where he'd stashed the boy the werewolves meant to take from him. Bennet has no idea who the boy is or what the wolves wanted with him, he just knows that an ambassador from their pack approached him and made a very pretty speech about an alliance between them and his camp if only he would capture a certain human for them. He'd vaguely wondered why an ordinary human would be out in one of the prohibited zones and not safely underground, but it hadn't mattered to him enough to ask questions. Attrition has whittled his camp's numbers and the alliance would have bolstered their fighting numbers considerably.

There's no door to bother with opening, but the heavy footfalls of boots on linoleum announce Bennet's return. He doesn't bother looking around; the old station's long since been stripped of anything that wasn't bolted down or too heavy to carry off. Certainly there's nothing to clean the blood off himself with. Damp and blood-splattered, he walks behind the bare counter where he last left the boy.

"We need to talk, you and I," he announces without preamble, squatting to cut the hogtie and unwrap the strip of rag gagging his captive. The lad's hands and feet are still bound, and Bennet hoists him up into a sitting position, settling into a squat so that the two of them are more or less eye to eye.

[ The Red Talons knew many things. One of them was the grim awareness that they were few, and when the end came they would all die fighting it. There were not enough of Griffin's children left to carry a hope of survival, only mutual destruction.

Night Hunter had something he needed to do. Five days ago, he said to give him five days. Beyond that, expect he would not return.

The most the others could get out of him was: 1) It was extremely important. 2) They would not be able to help him, and would make it worse. 3) If he told them what he was doing, they would try harder to involve themselves, and 4) They could not stop him, and would you please trust him and let him go.

Regardless of how it had gone, Hunter had gone.

It is nearly nightfall when the dark shape of the last Red Talon limps across the boundary of where they've been calling home since the end of the world. Hunter has traveled in Hispo, there are no secrets left to stop him and many dangers that make this wise. The reason for the limp is apparent: a nasty wound from a massive set of claws has rent him down one shoulder. That it hasn't healed itself yet speaks ill of their nature.

He pauses at the edge, briefly unreadable, then speaks: ]
