The Pacific Rim Meme



We always thought alien life would come from the stars. But it came from deep beneath the sea, a portal between dimensions in the Pacific Ocean. Something out there had discovered us. The first Kaiju made landfall in San Francisco. The second attack hit Manilla. Then the third one hit Cabo. Then we learned this was not going to stop. In order to fight monsters, we created monsters of our own. We needed a new weapon. The Jaeger Program was born. Two pilots, our minds, our memories, we were connected. Man and machine became one.

In the near future, giant monsters identified as "Kaiju" have begun attacking Earth's coastal cities, resulting in a war that takes millions of lives and quickly consumes humanity's resources. To combat the monsters, a special type of weapon is designed: massive robots, known as Jaegers. The Jaegers are controlled simultaneously by two pilots who are bound together in a process called Drifting, creating a neural link between their minds. The link lets them share the mental strain which would otherwise overwhelm a single pilot. The Jaegers are the last, best hope for humanity's survival.

Instructions:
1.Choose a role (or multiple roles!) and post with your character/fandom.
2. Others will post to you with a scenario.
3. All Jaeger names must made up of two words that have little to do with each other. This is mandatory.
4. Go big or go extinct. Or just have fun, that works too.

Roles:

1. Jaeger Pilot: The rock stars of the kaiju wars. You and your partner may be siblings, spouses, parent and child, or just two people who have the trust and compatability necessary for a successful Drift. Get out there and kick some ass.

2. Engineer: The war against the kaiju isn't just fought by the pilots. You're one of the countless support staff that design, repair, and enhance the Jaegers for maximum kaiju-smashing potential.

3. Scientist: Biologist, physicist, kaiju groupie. You study these horrific monsters so you can figure out how to destroy them...or you just really have a thing for alien anatomy.

4. Mission Control: Off the front lines but not out of the battle. You're watching the monitors, dealing out the orders, and generally making sure your Jaeger pilots don't do anything more stupid than normal.

5. Civilian: A black market dealer in kaiju organs, a reporter trying to get her big scoop, or just some poor schmuck trying not to get stepped on. You're one of the folks that the Jaegers are fighting for.

6. Other: Go wild.

Scenarios:

1. Preparations: Dealing with kaiju is a process, not a moment. Pilots need to physically and mentally hone their strength, engineers need to perfect the Jaeger weaponry and armor, scientists need to run their experiments, and black market dealers need to make their money.

2. First Neural Handshake: It's time to Drift with your partner. You'll experience each others' most painful secrets, joyous memories, and the time you got drunk and made out with the captain of the football team. Hang on, it'll be a bumpy ride.

3. Downtime: Chill out, have a beer, pretend the world isn't ending. You can explore the thriving towns that have grown up amongst the kaiju remains or just stay in the Shatterdome doing combat practice. However you relax, you've earned it.

4. Kaiju Detected: Battle stations, folks. Get to your cockpit, your command post, or your underground bunker. The monsters are coming, and they ain't gonna stop until someone does something about them.

5. Combat Mode: It's go time! You're in the heat of things, punching these otherworldly abominations in the face with your awesome. Remember to call your attacks; it makes them more powerful if you shout their names first.

5. Aftermath: Job well done, folks. Sit back, enjoy the celebrations, put another tick mark on your kill count...and if necessary, mourn the dead.

6. Other: Go further wild.

[Reginald Hargreeves was one of the originators of the Jaeger tech, but he didn't think that the PPDC was going far enough in testing and protecting the world.

Which led to him collecting seven children of approximately the same age who'd been orphaned by kaiju attacks and building his own shatterdome, of sorts, to train them. Klaus is one of those, or was. He can't pilot any more because he chases RABITS too easily, and never his own.]

The door to his lab is open again. It's almost something he's come to expect over the years of being here. He can almost set his watch by the invited guest. Victor's lost count of the number of times he's told literally everyone else that his laboratory is off limits only to find Klaus has let himself in anyway.

There are important experiments happening in there. He might always have been too unhealthy to pilot, physically too weak and his head always too full and loud for a neural handshake, but Victor had been given a place here none the less for his uncanny knack for learning whatever there was to learn from Kaiju remains.

As always there's some truly ethically questionable experimentation going on past that door. Things Reginald had known all about and not just allowed but utterly approved of. It was perhaps the only thing that man ever approved of with him.

While the other Hargreaves trained in their Jeagers, Victor had his hands deep in viscera. Even now, years later, Victor pushes the boundaries of scientific exploration and he doesn't need interruptions. Or at least that's what he tells himself. But honestly, he's glad that at least one of the shatterdome's residents can't seem to understand or care about things like giant "keep out" signs. It gets far too quiet when it's only himself and his thoughts and the machines and another Kaiju to vivisect.

Victor tries to look put out as he steps through that heavy steel door, slightly still ajar. He looks around his lab, at the machines (some he's made himself), and computers and at all the specimens. But eventually he has to acknowledge the addition to his private science sanctum.

"I'd ask what you're hiding from this time, but I can imagine it's nothing good if you're back in here again. Or did you hear that I had managed to restart a Kaiju heart?"

Victor barely flashes a crooked smile. "If you bring coffee, I won't kick you out this time."

[ They've done it a thousand times, drifting together in the sims and trials and combat - but it always leaves him feeling a little off kilter when they come out of it. Needy.

It's annoying, but they've always had a deeper bond than most people. It's why they're here together and not the thousands of other candidates.

At any rate, he's swatting at Raleigh who's awake, playing candy crush on his phone like a dumbass, and pushing him over on his tiny bed. ]

[gipsy danger is in pieces on the other side of a closed breach, and it tears her apart a little bit to know this; in the grand scheme of things, it isn't a big tear, not with sensei (and chuck) lost in the frontline of duty, not with the world turned upside down.

this shouldn't be the thing that scares her the most, but: raleigh beckett isn't breathing.

she is kneeling on top of his pod, grateful he ejected himself on time, and aware that this is it, the last person she has left in this world. she pulls the hood off, and manages a he's not breathing over the radio, unaware if tendo even is there to reply. no, her focus shifts to gently pulling him up against her, and pressing her face against his shoulder, and pleading.

it's her lucky day, here. he listens.
