maybe you know how, maybe you don't. perhaps the memory is fuzzy, or perhaps it's crystal clear down to the look in your comrades' eyes. maybe it was your time; you've done all you wanted to. or maybe you weren't at all ready to go, maybe you went out kicking and screaming -- but none of it matters. you know you're dead, and the train is taking you to an afterlife. perhaps an afterlife of your choice; you might've earned that heaven. or perhaps you've earned something else entirely. it'll be a bit of a journey, though, so you might as well take your time and talk to the other people in your coach. death knows no place: most of them are strangers, even from faraway worlds. but death knows no time either, so who knows, some of them may be people you know, even if last you knew, they were alive -- or long gone. oh look, here comes the snack cart.

A seemingly innocuous detail in any other circumstance, but on this train it's another in a long list of things that are just ever so slightly off. It's getting under his skin. He doesn't remember how he got here. Or maybe it's more like... He has a horrible, sinking idea of how he got here and he's denying it with every ounce of his being.

Then he turns and nearly kicks himself to the floor because there's a man sitting on the seat across from him. Had he been there this whole time? Surely not. This compartment was empty before. What the hell?]

[ Lost in the joy of experiencing her vision, Adeline barely realized that what was left of her body was failing her until she slipped away. Far away. Far from the research hall, far away from the lonely room that smelled of blood and chemicals, far from the cries and screams of the other patients. The thick, sticky sounds in her mind slowly begin to subside and her eyes open to the sound of… something quite unfamiliar. A train?

Her eyes. The physical ones, having gone unused and unneeded for so long, but ahh… Everything is so very clear. For the first time in years, she can see. Her gaze moves to the light spilling onto the cobblestone from the train car that stops in front of her. There’s a release of steam that pierces the air and the door opens wide, beckoning her.

She looks around, seeing no one else and hesitantly steps aboard.

Hours pass as she becomes acquainted with the other passengers and the conductor. She never would have guessed that the afterlife would begin with a train. The prospect of being dead may have been distressing had she not fulfilled her purpose. Her life’s wish. There's a peace that has settled over her; she can accept this. There is but one more person she would like to see before she crosses over. Just one more time.

Surely, she could wish for that much.

So, she sits in one of the surprisingly soft seats, ready to wait for as long as it takes. To her surprise, it doesn’t take very long at all. The train stops a while later, its doors opening once again. She catches sight of her out the window before she even steps aboard.
