That one provoked an outright laugh.

"Oh, oh I can, and it would start with the drama dialed up to eleven."

She waved a french fry between her fingers as she talked with her hands.

"So Suzie found out with her super-hearing that Victor is going to ask someone else to the dance, oh noes! And Jeremy's fire powers are just, like, out of control around Steven and he's so embarrassed."

Kitty laughed herself. "You sure you've never been to the institute? Because that's pretty much our everyday lives."

That one provoked an even bigger laugh.

"Oh no, that bad?"

She snickered. "It definitely can be. It gets pretty hectic around the mansion."

She shook her head.

"People are the same everywhere, I guess - you'd probably have a good number of future novels out of it, if you were a writer."

"Oh I wish. Creative writing isn't really my forte, but man if it was, I'd definitely have stories."

"So is that a 'and I'll totally dish about them to drama and romance-starved Barbara', or....?'

She said it with a grin.

She snickered. "Naturally. But let's do it once we get back to your place, otherwise we'd be here for hours."

A laugh at that.

"A point extremely well made. I don't want to leave a me-shaped impression on this leather."

"Plus, I doubt the people working here want us around for so long. At least if we're not ordering anything."

She grinned, taking a bite of what little remained of her food.

"I mean, they're not paying us to provide ambiance to the place - do you know I had a friend who actually got paid for that? Granted, she looked like Marilyn Monroe's prettier sister, so they just paid her to sit around their club. Paid her way through med school that way."

She sighed, theatrically.

"I mean, it's better than my vision of nightlife. Nobody pays me a cent. Not even a tip."

"Oh wow...and who says people can't get paid to sit around?"

Sounded pretty nice, honestly.

"Ugh, I know, right? You'd think people would want to at least donate a little bit."

She laughed.

"That's it, I'm clipping a tin can with a slot in it to my utility belt."

"Perfect. After you save someone, you can rattle the change around in the can to give people a nice little hint."

She smirks, tittering a laugh.

"Oh, gosh, I can even imagine the facial expression I'd use. This is why I can never, ever do this."

With a laugh of her own, Kitty finishes her meal. "That's probably why it's easier to do this kind of thing when you know people with a lot of money."

Though part of her still wonders where the professor gets his money.

"Good heavens, yes. I can't tell you how much easier...backing makes my work."

"Yeah..." She snickers. "Though a little raise in allowance probably wouldn't kill them."

That got a knowing nod.

"I hear you there. I'm good for batarangs, but if I see a nice coat I'm on my own."

"Ugh, I know, right? They expect us to be responsible and manage money or whatever, but how are we supposed to juggle school, saving the world, and a job?"

"They never explain that part, yeah, we just kinda figure it out. Or, you know, don't."

"I mean, if they at least gave us a stipend, you know? A couple bucks per mook or something. I'd be doing just fine if I got a per diem, too."

"Right? Or just something extra to help us out. Maybe doing something for them part time."

[batgirl_babs]

"Tax credit would be nice, too. Some of us remember the fixing-our-own costumes phase. Do you have someone for that? I feel you X-men in particular would have to."

"I mean, sort of? We had some help, but maintaining our own costumes was part of that 'learning personal responsibility' thing."

As if they didn't learn enough just keeping their powers under control.

"Well that's rough," she says, with a wince.

"As if tangling with, y'know, robots and stuff isn't enough on that particular scale."
