THE ALPHA/BETA/OMEGA MEME


In our world, sexual roles are commonly defined by genders -- male or female or other, by sexualities -- gay or straight, bi or asexual or in-between. But what if they were defined by something else entirely?

Alpha/Beta/Omegaverse is a fusion of fanfiction tropes and animalistic behavior. In this world, sexual roles are divided into three categories: the Alphas (the dominant, the protective and the aggressive), the Betas (ordinary humans) and the Omegas (submissive, fertile and able to carry children).

ROLES:
1 - The Alpha.
* Stereotypically type A personalities.
* Anatomically: Males have a penis; females may have a penis in addition to a vagina.
* Alphas knot their mates, meaning that the base of the penis swells and locks them inside their mate while they produce copious amounts of semen in an effort to breed.
* Strong sense of smell.
* Near an Omega in heat, they experience a compulsion to mate that is almost impossible to overcome.
* Alphas may go into rut, which is their equivalent of Omega heat, and drives them to mate.

2 - The Beta.
* Ordinary human being.
* Lack of altered genitalia.
* Can mate to anyone.
* Might be able to smell hormones of Omegas and Alphas, but will not be overwhelmingly affected by them.

3 - The Omega.
* Stereotypically submissive, quiet, intelligent and less physically able.
* Female anatomy is similar to Betas; males are self-lubricating and may have either an external or internal vaginal setup.
* Regularly go into heat, which involves being overcome by the urge to mate. They are unable to consent while in heat.
* May be made compliant by a bite to the neck. However, that may also induce a mating bond.
* Often regarded as second-class citizens or prizes to be won.

SITUATIONS:
1 - Bonding - Love at first sight. You've spotted your soulmate. You can smell them, you can feel them, you know that they'll be with you until the end of your days. Unless there's something between the two of you. It could be age - maybe one of you has to wait until the other has reached maturity. It could be that the bond is one-sided, and the other has yet to fall in love. It could be an unwanted bond, or society could have divided you into different places. Is your love strong enough to conquer?

2 - Heat/Rut - The need is coming on you strong. Everyone for a half-mile around can smell it. Better find someone to ride it out with, or hole yourself up in a room with a few bottles of water and a durable sex toy. And you'd better hope that there isn't someone out there who will take advantage of your pliable state. Best case scenario, there might be a Beta who can take care of you, or fend off anyone too predatory.

3 - Pregnancy - Whether through a heat or not, you're pregnant. Congratulations - or condolences. Is it time to start a family, or time to start panicking?

4 - Suppressants - You're using suppressants to keep yourself on an even hormone cycle, skipping heats, or maybe pretending to pass as a different class of society. After all, Omegas might want to be in the military, where they're not usually allowed - or an Alpha might want to take a job in a university or as a nurse. Shouldn't they be allowed to, if their hormones are suppressed? Just hope that you don't miss a dose.

5 - Mistaken Identity - That friend that you always thought was an Alpha, or an Omega, or a neutral Beta, turns out to be something entirely different, and your world is turned absolutely upside down. Does it challenge your preconceptions? Or does it just ruin the balance between you two?

6 - Unlikely Pairs - After all, there's no actual reason that Alphas have to mate with Omegas. Maybe two Omegas can satisfy each other. Or two Alphas. Or your intended mate could easily be a Beta. Maybe this is just about breaking out of your pre-established role and becoming something new.

7 - Manifestation - In some cases, an individual may not know they are Omega, Beta or Alpha until their first heat/rut/manifestation, usually happening in early teen years. It may take you by surprise; it may be a blessing, or may be a deep disappointment.

8 - Other - Adventures in getting jobs, making families, fighting bad guys, and anything else you can come up with!

the years since barely graduating high school have been more or less peaceful with a couple hiccups here and there that were never anything worth speaking about. he moved in with min woojin and if he's honest, life has been good. it's not exactly how he would have wanted it — the constant use of suppressants to keep han siwon's omega body in check is both irritating and somewhat confusing (his mentality solidly remaining that of a beta) — but it's better than having actually died. this, he firmly believes.

so yeah, he doesn't mean to get in a fight, hasn't been in one in a long time actually. but the one he ends up in is of course in a club his friends insisted on going to, and of course it's three on one, and of course he's not cut out for this. but a couple steady years of swimming and other exercise at least leave him in a better place than the one he literally fell into the year han siwon died and yoon taemin lived, unbeknownst to almost everyone. two of them go down before he starts having a real problem, and even then he ends up on top only for the club's bouncers or whatever they are to come out and restrain him anyway -- like it's his fault!

he feels better at least seeing his friends get out, shaking his head vehemently at the one who hesitates to try and help as he mouths very clearly: go -- i am fine.

and he is, honestly, barring the bruises and scrapes he'll nurse on his own later since min woojin is away on business again for some time. it's probably for the best, as he'd rather him not see him like this. in their childhood he fought for them to survive and to be unafraid. in high school he fought partially because if he didn't he felt he'd lose what was left of himself and it felt justified. but now he's not sure, doesn't find anything particularly grounding in the iron in his mouth or the sting across his skin in various places.

he argues with the bouncers one-sidedly all the way to the back where there's a door that one of them knocks heavily twice against. in their hold, taemin struggles to no avail, though he does kick one pretty well so that the guy is pissed off enough that when they're given permission to enter, he returns the favor.

this is how one yoon taemin -- to everyone else, han siwon -- ends up a confusion of limbs and raised hackles on the floor of an office of a man he's met before. really he should've recognized the voice but through the door and in the midst of his scuffle with this one more ornery bouncer, well, he'd failed to do so.

now? not so much as he stares up from his place on the floor at a familiar pair of green eyes.

Most people flip either Alpha or omega with puberty. Ish. Twelve is early, sixteen is late. Fourteen is right around the median.

Dani Powell turns twelve. Fourteen. Sixteen.

Nothing.

She takes the beta sex ed. and secretly she's relieved. No one really wants to flip omega these days, despite the many strides made by the omega lib movement. There are still obstacles not faced by betas or Alphas. Bureaucracy. Prejudice. Enough hardship that her high school keeps a grief counselor on staff for when students flip omega. All the while claiming, of course, that it's not something to grieve over. Really, it's a gift.

Be a little more convincing, Dani thinks, coming from a not-grief counselor. But what does she know? She's just a beta.

Ruby, Dani's best friend in middle school, flips omega and Dani hears enough about heats and how to get through them that she spends a significant portion of time sitting between her grandmother and her aunt at church on Sunday's praying to God he never makes her flip anything.

Gloria, Dani's best friend in high school, flips Alpha at sixteen. Her parents throw her a party that stretches on well beyond midnight. Everyone on their block shows up. It's a great party.

But in school, formerly even tempered Gloria suddenly starts getting into fight with the other school Alphas. She's distracted in biology from the scent of Ruby sitting two rows in front of her.

Privately, Dani thinks that flipping Alpha is a big a tragedy as flipping omega. Neither kind seem to have any control of themselves. The lack is just packaged different for Alphas. It's being forceful. Dominant. The fighting just a natural consequence of needing to establish hierarchy.

It's bullshit.

Dani's seventeenth birthday comes and goes and she really thinks she's in the clear. If she hasn't flipped by then, she never will.

The universe, as it turns out, has a warped sense of humor. It waits for her to be completely confident before she flips.

She's nineteen. Away at college.

The school nurse -- a sweet omega -- is the one to break it to her. He can smell it on her, you see.

As it turns out, being an Alpha opens more doors than she thought possible. Her grades bump up, she's given a second scholarship, it's what gets her accepted to the Police Academy. She never feels privileged. Just like she's been given an unfair advantage.

The Academy is rough. Too many Alphas in one place. Tempers run high. Betas become the go betweens -- you can't have two Alphas on the same team.

It's exhausting.

Dani is twenty-one when she discovers suppressants. It's like being a beta again. The relief is indescribable. It's the balance she lost at nineteen, suddenly regained.

It sees her through the Academy. Through Vice. Through Major Crimes. (The only time she goes off them is between Vice and Major Crimes; she goes through more than one kind of withdrawal in Gil's spare bedroom.)

It's why she's so out of sorts now, stalking through the doors of their latest crime scene.

Upper West Side Manhattan, an apartment the monthly rent of which must be close to what she makes in a year. There's an itch under her skin, a warm flush to it, that nothing will ease. Her nose prickles with new and sharp scents. (The smell of the blood nearly overwhelming. How does Gil stand it?)

Dani stops shoulder to shoulder with Gil (ignoring the sharp glance he shoots her), and looks at the dead body lying crumpled in a pool of blood.

"Pharmacy was out of my brand," she tells him under her breath. "I'll go to another one after this shift."

And hopefully, by then, she'll have gotten through to her doctor's office and cleared up the little misunderstanding about the prescription. She's supposed to still have another three month refill. She's very meticulous about these things. She's never once miscalculated.

[ For Sephiroth not to be in tune with them would be impossible. He doesn't need to be there to have one finger on the pulse of each of his pack, his family, at all times. But curbing their impulse to breed with anyone else is what drives him to interfere when casual lust becomes something much more needy and intense. Whether they want him or not doesn't matter. By rights, they're his, and he isn't about to let anyone have them when the time comes.

Which it has, for Yazoo. The slow escalation of his desire, the chaotic edges of his behaviour driving Sephiroth to show his hand with increasing frequency. That Yazoo may have been doing it on purpose doesn't escape him: few things his remnants ever do can, but the illusion of autonomy goes a long way. Sephiroth is not shy about using this leverage to his advantage when the situation calls for it. Some measure of unpredictability is always bound to happen when a heart and soul are involved — but the reality is that none could deny him forever. Not his remnants, not even Cloud, the most willful of them all.

The need in Yazoo hooks Sephiroth somewhere in his gut, turns all of his senses up and demands his focus. Rarely, if ever, does his presence warrant a warning, but Sephiroth in all his mercy offers one anyway. Yazoo has learned better than to ignore his phone, no matter what he might be getting up to in his personal time, and the fact is Sephiroth prefers to witness his willing capitulation. ]

Get rid of him, or I will. You have five minutes.
