It's been a while since it happened. Jack still doesn't really understand the bombs, the fighting. He's not sure any of the Guardians really understood it. But he understands fear and death. And there's nothing they can do to stop it. The humans that survive go underground. If they still tell stories of the way things were, he's not even sure. There's not anyone easily accessible to see if they pass through him.

Everything is a wasteland, twisted, glowing in the dark sometimes. The animals are strange, too. Jack is a spirit; the nuclear fallout can't hurt him, but in some ways that's frustrating, too. Even North doesn't have answers. The Guardians are powerless when there is no belief, and it makes things strained between them. How can they protect anyone from anything if they can't even find whoever is left? Jack never imagined tragedy like this. There's no one above ground to have fun with, and it makes him wonder what the point is.

Today he's flying distractedly through the empty burned out streets of Burgess. It's what he knows, or what he knew before the disaster happened. The buildings are still mostly standing, but they're long since abandoned. Jack finally perches on a tree near the lake and stares down at the water. It's murky now where it used to be clear. Nothing makes sense! The cold seems to go on forever. Normally, he'd like that, but it's not good here, or anywhere.

He conjures a snowball and tosses it at the water. It splashes and melts. He does it a few more times before he realises he's not alone. It's been a minute since he's seen anyone, sensed anyone. The other Guardians have their own things to deal with. But this world of fear? Well, surely it's the perfect place for the Boogeyman, isn't it?

Jack jumps out of the tree and whirls around in one motion to face the shadows underneath the tree.

"I know you're there," he says, anger sparkling in his eyes.
