Congratulations: You are dead.

 

Maybe you know how, maybe you don't. Perhaps the memory is fuzzy, or perhaps it's crystal clear down to the look in your comrades' eyes. Maybe it was your time; you've done all you wanted to. Or maybe you weren't at all ready to go, maybe you went out kicking and screaming - but none of it matters. You know you're dead, and the train is taking you to an afterlife. Perhaps an afterlife of your choice; you might've earned that heaven. Or perhaps you've earned something else entirely.

 

It'll be a bit of a journey, though, so you might as well take your time and talk to the other people in your coach. Death knows no place: most of them are strangers, even from faraway worlds. But death knows no time either, so who knows, some of them may be people you know, even if last you knew, they were alive - or long gone.

 

Oh look, here comes the snack cart.

 

All the usual:

 

• Post with your character's name and canon in the subject line.

• Said character is now dead for whatever reason - canon, AU, what have you. They are on a train with other dead people from many other times, places and worlds.

• Characters don't know for a fact where they're headed - just a general awareness that they're going to some kind of afterlife. Whatever they think it is is up to the player.

• This meme is built especially for cross-canon interaction, and potentially for threadjacking and group threading - if you're interested, may be a good idea to state as much in your subject line.

the moment abby catches sight of her, her chest tightens. she sucks in a breath through clenched teeth, reaches an arm across herself reflexively to touch her side. old wounds. scar tissue that bubbled up and never smoothed out, only ever joined the club. she still has nightmares about that knock down, drag-out fight on the beach and the feeling of ellie's hands scrabbling at her face, her throat, holding her underneath of the water. the fight was already well out of her then. she has no desire to reignite that now.

There was only one place that Rory was ever less than happy to see Amy. It was, of course, in the land of the dead. Even then it still made him less depressed and he couldn't help the smile. "Amy!" He paused then frowned, pulling out his mobile phone. "Which universe, which death, and are you on another return ticket?" It wasn't quite the same as River synchronising her diary with The Doctor; that wasn't needed as she wouldn't remember and he'd remember it more hazily than he did most of his time as The Last Centurion. He had after all had a little more practice dying than she did, and intended to keep it that way. But knowing which of them was where helped.

The Meme's Actual Point

"Well. This is a load of bollocks." Sam seems more... pouty, than upset about this predicament. Arms crossed, one leg twitching repeatedly. "This stupid thing is running late, I've got to a psychopomp to challenge to a duel so I can get out of here."

It won't really be that easy for him, or indeed, anyone. But he hasn't yet accepted things fully.

Something Different

It starts as a black horizontal line in the air, like a slice in space. But the line grows into a circle, filled with wavering colours and pulsing power with only a second vertical column of black down the centre still and colourless, giving it the look of a great serpent's eye. The slitted pupil at first seems to widen, but that's merely an optical illusion. It's growing closer, racing through he uncountable space between worlds, an extending tunnel which converts concepts into distance. The sound that accompanies it is words echoing in reverse, the reverb quiet and growing louder. Unclear words, until the speaker catches up to the sound.

"I've done it! The barrier between life and death, breached! But am I in time!?" With a soft sound, overpowered by his jangling jewellery a man emerges from the breach in reality. He lands cat-like with a hand bracing him on the floor of the train, spending a moment gathering his thoughts. They're less eloquent than his words. Shit, shit, shit, he chants in his head. Where are they? I need to get out of here quick!

Standing, he calls a name at the top of his lungs. Someone who is not yet meant to die!

[ The scenery outside the transparisteel window shifts and changes without any sort of respect for reality; one moment the maglev rail seems to be following the curving shore of the Silver Sea, then the urban sprawl of Coruscant, then the snowy, rocky ravines of Ilium.

The images cycle.

There’s no destination.

This does not confuse Ben, though perhaps it should. Just as he had calmly accepted his sudden, inexplicable arrival on the train, so too does he sit and idly watch the places of his memory filter past. It’s hard to tell how long he’s been waiting – time, like reality, has fallen away.

But he is waiting. It’s impossible to remember what for – until, finally, he turns away from the passing sand dunes to the seat in front of him and sees Rey. ]

Oh. [ A faint noise of surprise breaks the silence within the otherwise empty car. ] I’ve been waiting for you.

He wasn't supposed to die. Steve was supposed to be protecting the kids, and he couldn't do that anymore and who would look out for them from those things?? He's dealt with some pretty weird shit, almost all of it centering around Nancy's brother and his friends. There was so much he couldn't explain, but he'd known what he needed to do.

Man up, keep a bunch of kids as safe as he could.

Dying sucked about as much as it possibly could have. Being torn to pieces by literal monsters was about the worst way anyone could go, right? Hopefully, it bought Dustin and the others some time. The train he's on is a bit jarring, and it looks modern in a way that reminds him of something vaguely out of Star Wars. Futuristic, anyway.

Death's still jarring enough that he doesn't realize he's wandered into another train car that's occupied. ]

Sorry, uh. [ He drags a hand down his face, glancing at the empty seat across from a woman with dark makeup and fire-red hair. ] This seat taken?

[ Funny how he would really rather not be alone when he doesn't know where the hell he is. Stranger danger? More like life is danger. He slouches down into the seat, anyway. ]
