Like so often happens, Sherlock's theories on this latest murder are at odds with the ones being pursued by Gregson and Bell. So they've convinced the main suspect to meet them in a fancy restaurant under the guise of a business deal. Sherlock is certain that with just enough verbal rope, he can persuade the man to hang himself.

It's about ten minutes past the time the suspect was supposed to arrive. Joan has already gone through a glass of water (they're ridiculously small), and the waiter has just brought her another. She checks her watch.

"I don't think he's coming."

She takes a drink of her water, and winces almost imperceptibly. There's a slight bitter undertaste.
