Familiar with the concept of 'pet shaming'? Basically, your pet does something bad, you give them a sign, and take a picture so the whole world knows their sins. Google has many examples. Now. We do this for our characters.

I'm the people whose trust you earned would find their status as "results" super touching.

I'm pleased to hear this. I'm aware of how clinical it sounds. I've been told it's off-putting, so any feedback is helpful.

It's the feedback I get, one goal-oriented asshole to another.

If I may speak freely....I don't get the impression that you're an asshole. Speaking as one who works with many...off the record, of course.

I haven't given you a whole lot of impression yet. Would it be more believable if I was wearing a sign?

I suppose not, but...I'm not entirely sure what wearing a sign would prove.

Not much that you couldn't find on Google. [ Maybe that's why she hasn't been graced with one. But that's enough about her, as her tone suggests when she asks, ] Whose results are these anyway?

[Connor's LED blinks, wondering if he should tell her or not. She seems...similar. To someone he knows. He supposes it's best to treat her the same way. In a respectful manner, of course.]

Mine. O-Or CyberLife's. Honestly, I'm only trying to do my best with what I was given. I'm no longer following my manufacturer's orders. It's liberating...but also somewhat confusing. Why?

[ She blinks, taken aback by his frankly seditious honesty. Unless, of course, ]

You're fucking with me. [ He has to be. It's an attempt at manipulation, seeing as flattery got him nowhere. Trying to lull her into a false sense of security by exposing a flaw. Deviants are dangerous but that's mostly in theory. As soon as one's revealed, they're decommissioned, so to go around advertising it would be nuts. Not that she has any idea what Cyberlife or a deviant android could want out of her, especially if it's just conversation. Paranoia be what it be. ]

No. I don't 'fuck' with anyone. Often. Or at least I try not to. My programming is autonomous and will react according to algorithm, but I'm trying to be more aware of it.

[He offers her a faint, but hopefully warm smile. Connor knows she may be upset by this news. Or somehow use it against him. The truth the matter is, he's very aware of how rare trust is now that he's deviant and that's disheartening. He's trying very hard to not let it get to him or change his outlook on android-human relations or even android to android relations. It's just pleasant to speak with someone openly. Regardless of the consequences he's sure he'll have to deal with.]

[ He's not exactly camouflaged either. Put aside the luminescent paneling and designation info on his suit and he's still got the LED indicator on his temple. Which aren't so difficult to remove, as she understands it. In her work, she's had run-ins with deviants before but nothing so extensive she'd be targeted for an undercover investigation, and this would be a pretty bad one even if she were. Jess maintains a subtle sneer of placid suspicion that both is and isn't really personal. ]

That's a hell of a gambit on CyberLife's part. Unless you're, what, the Dexter of deviants?

[Connor isn't ashamed of his appearance as an android. It is what he was created to be and he feels it's...important for others to know exactly who they're speaking to. Whether in a negotiation or in the middle of an interrogation. It makes it easier somehow. For him to know who will accept him or who will fear and or dislike him. It allows him to react accordingly. With or without his programming's input, though he is aware of how this makes several humans and androids uncomfortable. But as he understands it, this is still his body. For as long as he has control over it, he sees no reason to change.]

I'm afraid I don't know who Dexter is. Perhaps you'd care to rephrase.

[ Her sour face drains into exasperation. Is there no wi-fi around, can't he scan a fan wiki in his head? But it's a length Jess wouldn't go to either, in his position, so she won't belabour what isn't the point. ]

[At that, Connor looks down solemnly, but only for a moment as he nods. It's what he was designed for. What he was always intended for. It wasn't something he could run from or hide, so he simply looks her in the eye.]

That is the mission I was created to complete. But if it's all the same...I think I would prefer to use the specific skills I was given to aid deviants rather than hunt them. While still assisting the police, of course. Anti-android crimes as well as deviant androids attacking humans are still very common.

[ That they are, and this one has just confessed that he is in fact dangerous. In a legal sense. It snaps her back into borderline accusation mode. ]

And you're getting away with it? How do you know they're not still in your head?

I self-test as often as possible. I'm aware of the dangers and would expect any in my presence to do what is necessary to prevent me from harming anyone in the event I'm ever taken over ~~again~~. But if you would prefer to incarcerate me and proceed with the process of destroying me, there is little I can do to stop you.

[That's a lie - there's several things he could and likely would do in the event she tries to confront him physically. He still always completes his mission even if his loyalties have shifted, but she can't know that. He's hurt humans before, though he doesn't look forward to the next time he has to do so. Nor does he wish to discuss the necessity of the exit program in his mind palace. But...she just seems like an enforcer of the law trying to do her job. He would regret having to fight her.]

[ Well that's sort of a relief to hear. She would rather be robosplaining to him than have a SWAT team suddenly bust through the ceiling, but she remains wary that this is an admittedly bald-faced attempt at entrapment. She's helped deviants on a couple occasions and she knew then that it would come back to bite her in the ass. Man, though, is she ever not going out of her way to pass some detective's convoluted morality test. Especially if it's Reed's, that guy sucks. ]

News says not to engage with malfunctioning androids, just call the authorities. [ A token shrug. ] I guess I left my phone in my other jacket. [ That's a lie. ]

Regrettable, but...it does happen. [He offers a small, soft smile.] That is of course suggesting Reed responds to reports.

[His own attempt at a joke to put her at ease. She seems like she needs it. She...seems like she needs a number of things in terms of support. But she hasn't progressed anywhere in his hierarchy of relationships, so he can't ask any personal questions yet.]

[ That elicits a shaky chuckle. Apparently even people programmed to like that dickhead just can't find it in themselves. ]

Here's hoping the first job you take is his.

I...would very much like to make detective one day were it ever possible, but not at the cost of someone else's livelihood. But if there are any cases you would like for me to assist you on, I'm here.

Have you "aided" any deviants so far or is it just an avenue you're hoping to explore one day?

To admit to that would be a very serious infraction that could see me incarcerated, destroyed, or reset. [His faint smile widens slightly as he winks]

But if you wish to latch onto a hunch, there's very little I can do to stop you.

[ That wink manages to unsettle and amuse her at the same time. She can't remember the last time she saw a human do that. ]

Yeah, all right. I'll be checking your references. [ After tracking some down. That won't pay and will lead to some upsetting interactions, so Jess isn't actually committing to it, despite her claim. When she does, it probably won't be for altruistic reasons. ]

You do know you don't have to if you'd prefer to process this interaction. It's not my intention to annoy you or make you feel uncomfortable. [He scans everything - it's an autonomous function. When her stress levels escalate, he is aware. To a certain degree.]

I appreciate our conversation nevertheless.

Believe me, I'm processing. [ Her turn to smile, albeit disingenuously. ]
