1. Just in case you saw my obituary in the paper, I thought I should let you know that it was a false alarm.

2. I’m not saying I don’t believe you, I’m just saying that I doubt that if they exist that a ghost haunting your apartment would be able to get their hands on the currency to pay half the rent.

3. I warned you that your jacket was a crime against fashion, and now you want me to bail you out of jail?

4. Is it bad that the most regular social obligation I’ve managed to keep up with is with the cat that stops by on the fire-escape outside my apartment at night?

5. Woke up on a park bench with a squirrel sitting on my chest staring at me as though my existence offended it.

6. Missfire and/or text him!

(Assumed modern AU for texting purposes. All canon, cross canon and assumed CR welcome!)

k we both know this isn't about my jacket
and that i could bust this jail open if i wanted
consider me asking to be bailed out a favour
way less embarrassing than me kicking your boss's ass
gadaboutdetective: (15)

[personal profile] gadaboutdetective 2019-09-29 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
If not about your jacket then what?

That’s a fair point, though I don’t imagine beating up the Inspector will do much to keep the law off your case.

[Watts was already on his way to the station, but that didn’t mean he wasn’t still going to be Watts-like and ask more questions than necessary. So Jessica might as well get settled in for a bit.]
ocasion: (pic#11653770)

[personal profile] ocasion 2019-09-29 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
i might have busted into some rich guy's house
you canadians really need to learn to lock your doors
probably not but i've dealt with worse and station 4 hasn't dealt with me

[ okay his door wasn't unlocked but after she opened it's never locking again so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. ugh. but she'll take watts over anyone named murdock. they're all annoying. ]
gadaboutdetective: (100)

[personal profile] gadaboutdetective 2019-09-29 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
That was you? I heard about that from one of the officers that was on scene at the time.
And I’m pretty sure that forced entry isn’t required if someone left their doors unlocked.
That wasn’t really my point, but I suspect that you already know that.

[This would be so much easier if she’d been in the jurisdiction of Station 1. At least they were all idiots or corrupt over there.]

Did the aforementioned ‘rich guy’ at least do something to warrant your B&E attempt?
ocasion: (pic#11664197)

[personal profile] ocasion 2019-09-29 05:46 am (UTC)(link)
okay fine it wasn't unlocked but it's never going to lock again so same thing
he had information i needed and wasn't playing nice

[ she could make another quip about canadians but she does need his help so she'll leave it for now. ]

yeah, he's linked to a case from new york
but your friends won't listen to me without solid evidence
which is what i was trying to get
gadaboutdetective: (68)

[personal profile] gadaboutdetective 2019-09-29 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Is it really the same though?

[Well, he supposed he could understand that. Murdoch and Brackenreid were more stickler for protocol and making sure there was evidence before they started digging too deeply. Especially when it came to dealing with the rich or those in positions of power.

Watts was more like a bloodhound (or a bastard cat that was here to sit on your furniture and mess shit up) and tended to dive headlong into a case once he thought he was on to something. Justice never sleeps, or something to that effect.
]

Did you ever consider that I might listen?
I do have some influence, I might have been able to get them to come around to it.
ocasion: (pic#9769492)

[personal profile] ocasion 2019-09-30 05:36 am (UTC)(link)
seems the same to me.

[ the second part takes her a bit longer to respond too. she didn't think of it, because she does things alone. it's better for everyone that way.

also watts is obviously a good person and she doesn't know what to do with those. but he's also her best shot at getting out of here - legally. ]

no
gadaboutdetective: (68)

[personal profile] gadaboutdetective 2019-09-30 07:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I figured. If you could fill me in a little more on the situation that might help when I’m pleading your case with the Inspector and Detective Murdoch?

[They might be a bit prickly about it at first, but he was certain he could bring them around on what ever it was she was working on. He just needed to present it as something worth investigating, and hope he could make them see it his way. His track record for taking an interest in worthwhile cases stood for itself, occasional dramatic hiccups aside.]
ocasion: (pic#9769026)

just makes up a case lol

[personal profile] ocasion 2019-10-01 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
[ she hrmphs to herself. she's got no reason to trust him. but he's a safer bet than the other guys at the station and it's only a matter of time before they realize she still has her phone. ]

the guy i followed from ny is connected to several disappearances. kids. except he's to stupid to be the one planning all of this. the rich guy might be his boss.

[ she hesitates for a moment before sending the next bit. ]

the kids have abilities. but they're orphans. homeless. drug addicts. so getting people to care is kind of a bitch. they're kids who when they disappear no one notices. until someone did and hired me.

The curse of playing characters that investigate stuff for a living OTL

[personal profile] gadaboutdetective 2019-10-01 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
[Well if there were one way to ensure that Watts would stick up for a case, it was to tell him that children were involved. Even if the case might have sounded far-fetched to most, if there was even the smallest possibility that someone was victimizing children and taking advantage of the fact that they were just homeless or orphans then he couldn’t ignore it.

The bit about them having abilities was one of those points that probably had made the others skeptical about the case. But... regardless of if that part were true or not, surely the idea that kids were going missing was enough to at least consider looking into it. Watts wouldn’t have been too surprised to get there and find out that some preliminary investigating had already been done, even if it might not have gone any further than that; but he would see to it that a case for a full investigation be made.
]

I see absolutely no reason why that shouldn’t be taken seriously, lucky someone had the conscience to hire you in the first place. I’m sorry that our station didn’t offer more in the way of help towards the investigation.

[Hopefully her arrest hadn’t alerted the possible ringleader to the fact that someone was on to him. If he even had an inkling of it, then every moment wasted on Jessica being in jail was a moment that he had time to destroy or hide evidence.]

Give me a half an hour, I should be able to have something worked out in that time.

[Luck willing. And if for some strange reason they wouldn’t go for it, well it wouldn’t be the first time Watts had ignored an order to not investigate something.]
ocasion: (Default)

tis our cross to bear

[personal profile] ocasion 2019-10-01 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah well next time someone says all canadians are friendly i'll have to tell them otherwise.

[ the abilities thing was always going to be the hard part, especially in toronto not new york. and even if they did believe her what could they do? what could anyone really do? call the avengers? not likely. and it wasn't like the rest of the heroes cared about stuff like this.

she's not sure it was luck that someone came to her. another kid. a kid who couldn't pay. she hadn't taken the case at first and then another kid had gone missing. it was hard not to blame herself. ]

fine. any longer than that i'm getting out of here on my own.
also i think that crab guy is scared of me. he's staring it me like i have an extra head.

[ if she wasn't on a case/sober she might have found it funny. ]

[personal profile] gadaboutdetective 2019-10-02 07:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, stereotypes. Yes, I’ve found those are rarely a good way to get a proper read on what the society of a nation is actually like.

[People, regardless of where they lived, were still people. They could be terrible or kind, rude or polite; sometimes all contained within the same person depending on the circumstances in his experience.

At the mention of Crabtree, his brows quirked up at the phone screen.
]

George? He’s an excitable fellow, but a good egg at heart.

Actually... he might be useful in this. Although a bit prone to paranoia, he is one of the more open-minded members of the force; and he’s been around the station for a lot longer than I have. Try not to spook him too badly, he probably just wants to ask about the whole abilities aspect of your case.

[Sure, it would probably all end up as inspiration for his next writing endeavour but it can’t hurt to have another member of the force on your side.

True to his word, however, Watts was seen slouching into the holding area of station 4 with a set of keys dangling loosely from one hand about a half an hour later. He was squinting a bit at the cells as though pleasantly surprised they were still fully intact, before stopping in front of Jessica’s with a little nod of greeting.
]

Well Miss Jones, I’m pleased to say that you’re free to go. There are some mm, caveats though.

[He knows she isn’t going to like this bit, but he was getting her out. Unlocking and opening the cell with a little flourish, he continued,]

I did my best to convince them that you have things well in hand, but they’re still... not particularly pleased with your methods thus far. They expect you to keep us, myself specifically, in the loop. But that does mean you will have our support, and resources.

[ she doesn't bother responding to his last texts, instead she waits and counts down. she was being serious about getting out of here on her own if he wasn't here in that half an hour window. she wasn't particularly concerned about what the toronto police would do to her. what mattered now was getting to the person who was going after those kids.

crab guy - crabtree still stares, shes doesn't really care what type of egg watts thinks he is. it's annoying. but for now she ignores it. as much as she'll say she doesn't care she does know she needs to stay on their good side. even if all she wanted to do was bust the cell door down.

she's honestly surprised when watts appears. she hadn't been

caveats? of course there are. she makes a face. ]

Yeah well, I wouldn't get shit done if I worried about pleasing people. [ she sighs and gets to her feet and exits the cell. ]

Listen Watts, if this guy is after kids with abilities he's gonna be dangerous. He might even have them himself. How ready are you and this department for this type of thing? Does Canada even have ...heroes?

[ she hates that word, which is more than apparent by the look on her face as she says it. ]

Uh well... I know there are rumours that Amazon’s Canadian division employs a ninja delivery girl that can...

[A pause as he glances at Crabtree, as if to seek out confirmation that he had the facts straight.]

Travel through subspace?

[With a vague shake of his head, he furrows his brow and gives the answer to her question more thought. ‘Heroes’ weren’t something he had any experience in dealing with. His cases tended to involve figuring out who murdered who, or the occasional heist. But heroes tended to deal with large scale events, and the ‘big names’ usually ended up exporting themselves to America. It seemed like that was where everything happened, so he supposed that was unsurprising. That wasn’t to say they didn’t have any, but it wasn’t like he knew how to get in contact with them.]

I believe there’s a group... Mm like your Avengers? They call themselves Alpha Flight, if I’m not mistaken; though I’m not sure how one would get in touch with them. I’m afraid my casework doesn’t usually require the involvement of the super-powered community.

(OOC: Ok let’s pretend for five minutes that I’m not a bad Canadian and I have read more than Scott Pilgrim as far as Canadian comics go. >>; Google is my friend in figuring out if Marvel ever wrote Canadian based superheroes that work in Canada..)
ocasion: (pic#13495011)

[personal profile] ocasion 2019-10-04 08:33 am (UTC)(link)
[ she raises her eyebrows - amazon has a superhero? of course they do but somehow her packages always seem to take forever. why did canada get healthcare and super fast amazon?

she crosses her arms and shifts her weight to one side as she listens. honestly, she knows nothing about canada's superheroes - alpha flight? she barely knows anything about the avengers. and she doesn't really care. ]

Yeah, well in my experience it's not like they'll come when you call. And they'll just draw too much attention. [ which is why she should be doing this on her own, but she'll play nice... for now. ] We should go question the rich guy.

[ ooc: lol well they're not really well known and their reboot from a few years ago kind of sucked so maybe it's better off? they only seem to come up when they need a random team of heroes for someone to lead, lol. ]
gadaboutdetective: (15)

[personal profile] gadaboutdetective 2019-10-04 03:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree, the sooner we do the less time he’ll have to get his story in order if he is involved.

[There was however a concern that needed to be voiced before moving forward,]

Did he see you at all during your arrest? He might be less than... ah cooperative if he did and recognizes you as the person who broke into his home.

( ooc: Oh good, I don’t feel as bad then >>;;)
ocasion: (pic#13494983)

[personal profile] ocasion 2019-10-04 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
[ she shrugs. ] No idea. But I think you'll find I can be very persuasive. [ as in if he doesn't answer her questions she has no trouble using her fists - which watts probably wouldn't approve of but it would get the job done. ]

I'm gonna need my stuff back. My camera is in there.

[ also her flask. she notices that crabtree is still watching them. she sighs and takes a step towards him. ] Hey Crab-guy. [ she goes over to his desk and effortlessly lifts him up while he's sitting in his chair and sets it on his desk. ] That answer what you're too afraid to ask?

[ ooc: lol good don't. tbh i only found out about them when i started collecting comics and found a first edition of the original run. there are some pretty fun characters i'd love to see in comics more. i'd also love to see a reboot one day though. especially for the character that is somewhat based on inuit culture maybe this time it wouldn't be a blonde lady. ]
gadaboutdetective: (91)

[personal profile] gadaboutdetective 2019-10-04 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
[He raises an eyebrow at that, but who is he to question her? PI’s are generally known to be good at being persuasive when necessary, and maybe he’ll learn a thing or two by observing her methods!

... He won’t learn anything he can use in the future, sure, but he doesn’t need to know that yet.
]

Oh, yes. That can be arranged, just a moment-!

[His other eyebrow joins the first one, Llewelyn supposed he should have seen that coming with how George was staring. But the man looked like a terrified Labrador retriever before she lost her patience with him, and now he was gaping like a fish. So, needless to say the little wordless nod she got from him would have to suffice for an answer. After they both left, it was likely that the man would be unable to shut up about the experience for the next few days, much to the annoyance of those trying to work on other things.]

Oh boy... Alright, um, we’ll just grab your gear on our way out the door!

George, I trust you can get yourself down? Mhm, excellent. With me then, Miss Jones!

[He snaps a finger and points in the direction they keep the personal belongings of the people who have been arrested, slouching off quickly in hopes of avoiding any further hiccups in their departure. Chances are that more people would be likely to stare after that little display, and he had a feeling Jessica wouldn’t hesitate to do something of the sort again.]

(ooc: A well done reboot would be fantastic, what I’ve read about some of the characters sounds really interesting if they’re done well!)
ocasion: (pic#13495048)

[personal profile] ocasion 2019-10-08 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
[ jessica smirks a little at crabtree's reaction - she can't help it. she turns away and heads in the direction watts' pointed. really the sooner they can get her things the sooner they can get out of here - the better. the time she's already wasted by being in jail probably hasn't helped this case.

she needs to find this guy. she needs to know why he's after those kids and stop him. and maybe - maybe, find them or at least some of them. she's learned not to hold out hope for a happy ending. because most fo the time happy endings didn't exist.

also she really needs a drink. ]

What type of cases do you normally get here?
gadaboutdetective: (77)

[personal profile] gadaboutdetective 2019-10-10 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
[Watts led her along to where her personal belongings were stored, unlocking the door to the locker that held everything with a quick turn of the key. He considered her question as he began pulling things out to hand over to her.]

I get a little bit of everything. I don’t generally like to limit the casework I take on. The greater bulk would be homicides, of course. Followed by but not limited to missing persons, organized crimes and the occasional robbery. As they say, no crime is too big or too small; if someone has been victimized then it’s my job to see that something is done about it.

[Peering into the locker to double check and make sure that it was empty, he closed it up with a nod.]

That should be everything?
ocasion: (pic#)

[personal profile] ocasion 2019-10-13 07:19 pm (UTC)(link)
[ there isn't much - it's really just her ratty messenger bag. but it's the contents that matter. her camera. her laptop. notes on the paper trail that led her to toronto. she takes her bag from him and goes through it, double-checking that everything was still in there. she's almost surprised her flask is still in there - definitely surprised there's still whisky in it.

without caring about the look she knows she's going to get she pulls out the flask and opens it to take a swig. she's just spent how long in a cell, she needs it (which is really just an excuse). ]

Yeah. [ she shoves the flask back in her bag then swings it over her shoulder. ] So is it true, you guys always catch your man?
gadaboutdetective: (108)

[personal profile] gadaboutdetective 2019-10-13 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
[He may have raised a questioning brow at the flask for a moment, but didn’t have much to say about it. Jessica wasn’t a member of the force and couldn’t exactly get in trouble for drinking on duty, plus Watts was used to seeing a certain inspector sneaking a glass of scotch in his office now and again.

Besides, he was guilty himself of getting at least two people inebriated during business hours. Though he argued that one was for educational purposes and the other was simply the matter of someone not being able to hold their wine. If she was as serious about this case as she seemed, he was sure she knew better than to actually go overboard with drink while investigating.

Her question garnered more attention, though. A little questioning hum escaped at the comment with a noticeable roll of his eyes. More stereotypes, and this one seemed more of a reach to him.
]

I’m not a Mountie, and that particular motto tends to be associate with them. I’m beginning to wonder, what do they teach you all in school about Canada these days?

[Once she was situated, he began leading her out of the station with a little awkward turn from one direction to another.]

Although... I do admit that I have a fairly high success rate as far as investigations go.
ocasion: (pic#13494979)

[personal profile] ocasion 2019-10-16 06:44 am (UTC)(link)
[ she takes another swig from her flask before she shoves it back in her bag. ] Nothing actually. [ she couldn't really remember much of what she learned in school, it was never really her thing to begin with. trish probably knew more about canada, she probably did a trish talk on their health care system or something.

she follows him out of the station. he's a bit odd, but watts also seems like one of the good ones. it's why she's willing to work with him - at least for now. back in new york she has detective costa, so she supposes it only makes sense she has someone here too. ]

Then let's hope we can add this case to that.
