[ After finally defeating that lesser ranking (yet still powerful) demon and taking her head, Josuke rushes over to where he had last seen Tomioka. The man was a pillar, and extremely skillful to boot. It went without questioning that he had ability. However, ability alone was not always enough when it came to demons -- demons were practically immortal as long as you didn't take their heads, and humans go down after one fatal strike. Furthermore, Tomioka was up against one of the upper ranks. He definitely needed back-up, and even if he didn't, Josuke heads over to where he is anyway. It doesn't hurt to show up.

He's not at all surprised to see the bloody scene before him -- at this point they're pretty much desensitised to that now. There's a headless body with a head rolling off somewhere, and that body is disintegrating quickly. This means that Tomioka had won. ]

Guess you didn't need me after all. Defeating the Upper Rank 5 all on your own like that -- Tomioka-san, you're a really cool guy.

By all rights, Jacob shouldn't have been able to do it at all. His days as a Jedi were so far behind him that they were practically across the horizon, and his connection to the Dark Side was strong - he'd grown used to directing the unfettered growth and uncontrolled destruction, the unlimited power, of the Force, and nowadays he seldom if ever touched the Light Side and its capacity for stability and preservation.

But if there was any being in the galaxy whose life ought to be preserved, it was Thrawn. Since Jacob had taken his posting aboard the Chimaera as a Senior Engineer - the role that occupied most of his time, as the Emperor had only occasional need of his highly specialized talents as an assassin and spy - he'd seen how the Grand Admiral operated, and it had led Jacob to the realization that the one true hope for the galaxy wasn't the Emperor or his apprentice or any of his Moffs, wasn't even the Empire itself, nor the Rebellion, despite its audacious claims for itself. It was Thrawn, because he had something that no one else possessed. Even back when Jacob had been a Jedi, he'd often struggled with the question of acting for the sake of the greater good, of how to tell that one's actions were truly right. Thrawn never seemed to have to ask; he always just seemed to know, more unerringly than any Jedi Master whom Jacob had ever met. Most importantly, his actions were guided by the fact that he valued not life, but lives.

To a former Jedi who had grown disillusioned with the Order even before its destruction, that distinction was everything. It was why the Grand Admiral commanded Jacob's absolute loyalty, and why, despite the very real possibility that the Emperor might take exception, Jacob had rebuilt enough of his connection to the Light Side to chip the rust off his Force Healing powers.

It was also part of why he was succeeding, though not the entire reason. From the most basal level, the body of every living organism had an idea of how all its pieces were supposed to fit together, where everything belonged, woven through it in the Force; Jacob wasn't sure why, but in Thrawn, something about that tapestry was more distinct, easier to pick up - easy to work with, just like he was in every other way.
