Then he puts his hand on Tony's arm, squeezing it gently.] Did something happen today?

Bad day.
[The kind of day he'd normally be itching to drink away, but this... goes deeper than that. He's sure that will come later, but for now he needs some familiar comforts and that means pizza and Steve.]
no subject
By now he's managed to learn most of Tony's habits for when a “bad day” occurs and knows that drinking would be one of his escapes for a day like this. Which is he's had JARVIS set up an alert for him if Tony started drinking.
For now he's going to distract the other, but he is first going to see what the other wants him to do.]
Is there anything I can do to help you feel better from it?
no subject
He tosses the last half of his pizza back in the box and turns towards Steve.]
I fucked up. When I decided to be Iron Man, it was about me. It was about what I wanted and I've never looked back.
no subject
Deciding he's not hungry and would rather listen to show his support, he places the napkin with his pizza next to the pizza box. There's no hesitation when he puts his hand on top of Tony's hand and squeezes it gently.
He's not sure what to say. But he's listening.]
no subject
[He shakes his head. Yeah, he's definitely going to need a drink to deal with this one. He let out a small huff and forced a smile as he looked back at Steve.] She tried to quit, but I wouldn't let her.
no subject
[He's not sure what he can say to that. What could he say that wouldn't sound superficial and cold. He knows for sure that he doesn't like the look of a forced smile on Tony's face, there's just something about that puts him off about it.
As far as security goes, he knows that JARVIS and Tony probably found the hole in it by now. He squeezes Tony's hand and forces a slight smile of his own.]
What can I do – to help you I mean?
no subject
[His smile looses a little bit of it's edge.] I mean, just be... you. And eat more of this pizza.
[Pause.] And when we're done. I might need you to take off all your clothes. [He raises his eyebrows.] You asked. That last one especially, always makes me feel better.
no subject
Ask and you shall receive.
[With that said he slowly takes off the thin sweater jacket and the shirt underneath that he had been wearing after running and working out in the gym. The pants he decides that it is better to leave on in case someone else walks in on them. At least until they are in the bedroom, then they'll come off.]
At the risk of someone walking in on us, pants stay on for now. Unless you want to move this to the bedroom that is.
no subject
Gee, Cap. I can feel my morale rising already.
[He does actually feel better, even if he doesn't really feel any less shitty about dragging Pepper into the line of fire. It isn't as if he hasn't thought since the incident earlier that day that it could've very easily been Steve. The only reason it probably wasn't is because they keep their personal lives locked down.
A flash of guilt moves through him and he looks away from Steve and towards the bedroom.]
You know it could happen again. It might be you next time.

Steve does know that he doesn't want to lose his best friend and partner either, but this is the life they had both chosen to follow. He felt that he himself had made that choice long before Bucky had chosen to sign up with the military and go to war. Long before he had met Dr. Erskine and signed up to be an experiment dummy for something that would either kill him or turn into a super soldier.
And Tony, according to his file, had found that calling under a different means. In a cave in Afghanistan, where he had also come up with the arc reactor to save his own life. He didn't quite know everything that he had endured even with the files SHIELD had on him, he knows that Tony has likely hacked his own file and taken out that information or kept it to himself.
He knows that either one of them could injured or killed on Avenger missions or even in the battlefield. As well as civilians like Pepper. He knows that Tony knows that better than anyone other than himself and the rest of their team.
So he nods with a smaller gentle smile even though he knows that Tony isn't looking in his direction.]
I know. But we chose to follow this path, Tony, you know that. That's part of life as Iron Man, Captain America, and being an Avenger. Pepper knows that you don't mean for her to be in the line of fire.

His mind is oversimplifying things. In one sense he knows that, but in another sense he refuses to accept that one day it will be Steve that's being used against him. To punish him. Or that someone might use him against Steve in that way. He's not so sure that Steve wouldn't let them succeed and that sends another wave of guilt through him.]
And you're okay with that?
[He wants to reach out and pull Steve in, crush his mouth against his and claim what's his. What he knows will someday bring him down to his knees one way or another. Instead he pushes himself off the couch and stalks towards the bar.]
no subject
[Steve's shirt is back on the second he sees Tony stalking towards the alcohol bar and he consciously is moving after his lover. The jacket is left back on the couch, since he doesn't really need to wear it inside. A drunk Tony is not someone Steve enjoys trying to have a conversation with, because once he's had a drink or more, Tony proceeds to become either an unhappy drunk, a worryingly silent drunk, or a strangely yet weirdly happy drunk.
In short there are number of reasons why he doesn't want to deal with.
Once he relatively close enough with reach of Tony, one of his larger hands snakes out quickly to grasp one of Tony's hands and he makes them both stop walking about halfway across on the path that would take Tony directly to the bar.
He stares down at their hands rather making himself stare at the back of his lover's head. He knows that Tony isn't happy about the entire situation, but Steve doesn't believe that he should resort to drinking because of it.]
Please don't.

The possibility of him going back to living the life he had before, without being conscious of the suffering going on around him or his ability to help ease it is something that he wouldn't be able to live with. If he's not Iron Man, he's just Tony Stark and that's simply not enough. He's not sure it ever was.
Steve's grip is enough to stop him, but he pulls back his hand on instinct, stepping up so that he's face to face with Steve and staring him down.]
I'm not okay with it, Steve. I'm the opposite of okay with it. You, Pepper, Rhodey... you're the best things that ever happened to me. If anything ever happened to any of you... [He licks his lips and shrugs.] There aren't any words.
no subject
Steve doesn't want Tony to face that possibility alone. What he's managed to find about his lover's past without the help of JARVIS or anyone else, is sobering to say the least, especially the bits that he can find about Tony's time in Afghanistan.
Every bit of it is sobering and reminds him to be thankful for this side of Tony that's turned over a new leaf and tried - is still trying to make up for things that he had in the past. It reminds him that without Tony, he simply wouldn't have something important enough to anchor him down to the point of trying keep the future safe and free of the chaos that threatens it almost daily.
He'd be forever lost in a world that has moved on without him and would leave him chillingly alone trying to catch up with it. Steve almost wants to go put on the uniform and become Captain America so that he can hunt down the people who hurt Pepper and the employees of Tony's company. But Tony needs Steve, not Captain America on a rampage after evil, and Steve is who he stays because he knows that in some way, Tony needs him.
The expression on Steve's face closes.]
I know. I know, Tony. I'm not okay with it either. I don't know what I would do if I lost you.
[Sure there is the rest of the Avengers around. But they aren't Tony and Steve really isn't sure what he would do, especially everything else that he considered important to him is already gone with the past.]
no subject
He swallows, looking down and away from him. He knows it's not fair to take this out on Steve. No one made this decision for him. He can't help but think that Steve would handle losing him much better than Tony would handle losing Steve. Steve is... he's made of better stuff than Tony. Tony thinks without a doubt he's stronger than him in ways that have nothing to do with the super soldier serum.
Tony sighs, his shoulders lowering as he seems to deflate in front of Steve. He's tired. Tired of thinking of all the things he can't control and all of the things that might be coming down the road.
He takes a deep breath and looks Steve over.]
I think you'd manage.
[He's not saying it because he wants Steve to refute it. He's saying it because he knows it's true. Steve has faced so much loss already, Tony can't see himself as being anything registering on that scale. Still he steps in closer.]
But I won't let it happen if I can help it. [He gestures towards Steve, his fingers brushing his shirt in the process.] This is the part where you say the same.
I apologize for the slight feels and the slight tl;dr in this one
His mother. Bucky. Peggy. And now Tony too. They are the ones who all have taken places within his heart, more so than other person he had known back then. Peggy was the first woman back then to really show interest towards him that had more to do with how buff he had become and the tallness of his stature. She had seen something in him and there had been something growing between them before that final mission into the ice field with the plane. And then waking up years later to find that Peggy had moved on like the rest of the world, becoming older whereas he had physically remained looking the same as he had back then.
And then there's Tony Stark.
The son of one Howard Stark that he had been a little close to back then and a man whom unknowingly represented everything about a decade that he was unsure about, struggling to follow it all, and some of it were things that he hadn't liked. There had been a small mutual dislike between them both, mostly brought on by the scepter that they had taken from Loki. Some after the battle and they had all gone there separate ways, Steve had returned to New York, the team moving into the Tower by invitation from Tony and from there they had gotten to know each other leading to the relationship that they were in now. He doesn't deny that he loves and is in love with Tony, there so many things about the man that he both loves and dislikes about him, but he's learned how to live with those random pieces of Tony's personality when they decide to pop up of nowhere it seems like.
He knows that Tony will be able to spot, if he does actually look, the slight refute in his eyes and in the small sad smile that appear quickly and then are gone again as quickly as they had appeared. Tony's fingers brushing against the shirt is enough to parrot Tony's words back at him. His hand catches Tony's gesturing hand and squeezes it gently with a slight smile.]
That's something that I won't ever let happen if I can help it.
Don't apologize, it's beautiful.
He doesn't deserve that look. Not with the mistakes he's made and the mistakes he's bound to make. Once again Tony is reminded of just how outclassed he is here and just how out of his league he is.
Sometimes he wonders if Steve realizes this at all.
He pulls Steve closer, his fingers curling around Steve's as he pulls him down for a kiss. It's gentler than the normal ones they share. It's more of a Thank you than a I need you now, but there's unmistakable traces of the second in it as well.
When he pulls away, it's only about an inch or two.]
Why are you wearing a shirt? I thought we lost the shirt.
