Most believed the Soldier was created during the waning days of the Republic. Some thought the origins went back further, given some of the rumors that had become tied to him over the decades. The truth would likely never truly be known, given the Soldier himself didn't know.

Yet another secret weapon for the Empire. A ghost traversing the galaxy, eliminating threats often before they were even aware they were being targeted. As the war stretched further and further it seemed inevitable that those leading the rebels would find themselves needing to prepare for a threat that seemingly couldn't be stopped. But, just like a ghost, the Soldier suddenly disappeared from the playing field. It was unclear why or to where. A few rumors pondered whether perhaps the programming and conditioning had begun to fragment and he was put on ice before free will could make him a threat to his handlers. Years passed and rumor gave way to myth, to forgetting and gathering dust, another relic lost to time.

Until a certain princess made an unlikely discovery.

Few things were known for certain about the Soldier. He appeared mostly human but his genetic code had been altered in a way that left doctors scratching their heads. His impressive cybernetic limb couldn't be tracked to any currently existing manufacturer of such tech and it was superior to virtually anything else on the market. He could operate most any ship, vehicle, or weapon he laid hands upon. His knowledge and comprehension of languages exceeded two dozen, stretching to all corners of the known galaxy.

And, like many damaged and abused creatures, he showed loyalty to the one who made an effort to give him a life with choice — even if the reasons might not have been entirely altruistic. In this case, that surprising loyalty extended to other family members. One, in particular, that he had been entreated to protect. Because who better to protect one Force user potentially from another than someone who was shown to have resistance to the Force? (New rumors were already starting, that that was the reason the Empire iced him and tried to make his existence disappear.)

The base on D'Qar was a mess of activity as the attack on Starkiller Base was launched, but there was one ship being prepared that wasn't heading into the fray, although it was just as important to get in the air.

"Hurry it up, Solo."

The slightly gruff voice came from inside the ship a moment or two before the Soldier — Bucky, his name was Bucky, although he still couldn't remember who gave it to him or why, but it had felt right when Leia uttered it back when he was thawed out — stepped out to grab the last couple boxes of supplies. With the knowledge that the First Order was bound to lock on to the base's location in short order, the order had been given to evacuate the General's son. Even if hope was being placed in the Falcon and all the fighters, no chances could be taken. Not when if those efforts failed and the base was destroyed, potentially with much of the Resistance, then one Jacen Solo would not only be one of the last known Jedi but also inherit leadership of the Resistance.

Hope was fine and good, but Bucky had seen the specifications of the First Order's massive base and weapon. They needed to be gone yesterday. Each minute dragged out on the ground was one less they had to get ahead of the Order's bloodhounds.

Doesn't have to be a good person, because Michael's not really the nicest guy himself sometimes, just has to be someone who's mortal enough to die and need a guardian angel following them around, whether they like it or not.

"As you know I couldn't run this place if I didn't have an investor who was connected, and who was smart enough not to interfere. Originally it was Bart Bass, but after he faked his death his son Chuck took over and refused to give anything back when Bart turned up from the dead four years later. Apparently he hadn't even told Chuck it was a fake, and Chuck had learned fast in those four years. The story is he shot Chuck's fiancee so Chuck killed him slowly and personally and seized his Iron City assets."

She shrugged. "That all might as well be ancient history to you. But he likes to inspect his businesses personally and he's more New York but we know he's on the way to Iron City. Which means there are good odds he'll be here in three quarters of an hour." She smiled. "And you're close to his type. Trim, brunette, smart, detail focused, and able to move in high society while looking like but not too like his dead fiancee. Which means you've a chance at the most eligible bachelor in the Mafia on the East Coast." And she'd remember who helped her out when she was down went without saying.

"Now, you've half an hour to get ready. Class and corsetry both work. Don't ask him for money and if you seduce him he'll give you jewelry. And don't be afraid to tell him your relationship with the mayor. He trusts people a lot more when he knows their agendas. And convince him you enjoy being hurt in the bedroom." The Madam neither knew nor cared whether Bella did but knew she could fake it well enough. "Now go." Apparently the drink offer wasn't that serious a one.

Thirty nine minutes later a young man in a dark suit turned up at the front door. On his own he just looked like money with a bodyguard, but all the old hands were being very deferential.
