Don't fear the Reaper

Sometimes the dead don't know they're dead or that it's time to go. But death is not some cruel hand of fate. Death can be kind and there's nothing truly scary about it, now is there? It's not so bad... is it?

But you've been rather elusive, so even the kindest sometimes need to use... tricks, illusions, to get you to let go, to realize it's time to leave. So Death can take many forms, from the handsome and lovely to the monstrous, from animal to mythical. Whatever you need that would most convince you that it's time to take Death's hand.

[She was lost, she didn't remember how she even got outside in the hills near her home. She supposed she shouldn't even be outside, but it was so nice to be outside in the spring and among all the flowers after she had been stuck in bed for weeks with a fever.

She had felt better and just... went outside. She didn't remember telling anyone, she hadn't gone very far, after all. She just wanted some fresh air.

In her stroll outside, she had found a field of flowers and had plopped herself down to make a daisy crown. She'd bring it back for Dinah! Dinah had been asleep when she had left so she didn't want to wake her precious cat. She looked up when she heard a rustling noise though and turned to look at the young man.]

[They've kicked the bucket. Bitten the dust. Are no longer for this world. Taken their last bow... And so on and so forth. That's when he meets them.

Well, very strictly speaking, he meets them a bit earlier, he's usually around for the last minute or so of their life. But his clients can only perceive him once that minute has passed.

Probably not what they expected to see. He's heard that quite a lot. Death should be a skeleton, or at least dressed in a black robe - at the very least in drab colours. He's been scolded for that before, too, especially in worlds that have very specific ideas about the reaper man. But hey. He just likes to be fashionable. And fashionable means to him: Colourful. Who doesn't like some colour in their lives? It's not a funeral, after all, just death. Whole different emotional situation, quite often.

Point being is that whoever just died, they'll find a young man in colourful clothes flash them a grin. A sickle is fastened to his belt, but more likely than not he doesn't stand at the ready to cut the thread that connects the soul to their body. Instead, he has found a spot nearby and gotten comfortable - leaning, sitting, whatever is the most comfy. And looks over at them, not noticed by anyone else in the room.]

I gotta say, you could have made better fashion choices there. [A lazy gesture towards the deceased body, or whatever is left of it.]

Don't misunderstand-- no matter how many centuries he's been at this, it never gets any easier to see a life end before it even really begins. So many dreams never to be realized, all that potential gone to waste. But Masamune has always known, ever since his own childhood, that even in times of peace, the world has no shortage of cruelty and misery.

The least he can do is ease their suffering and guide them through the dark. Just as someone did for him all through his life, and came back one last time in death. Might as well pay it forward.

Besides, kids tend to love it when he takes the form of a dragon.

It's a perfectly human man who stands before her now, dressed in white and gold robes that are more than a little old fashioned. The world is pitch black, no sky, no ground, no light, no sound; but the two of them are perfectly visible, and thick white snowflakes dance endlessly in the space around them, spinning gently in a breeze that doesn't exist.

[ The village is quiet, quiet in a way that no village should be. Bodies lay in odd positions as the ground is stained red beneath them. All appears still. Carrion-eaters have yet to make their way in for a bountiful feast. Maybe they fear treading on this ground.

And yet, there is someone still clinging to life amidst all this death. The question is, for how much longer. The tiny form has had his body pierced through and sliced, and his heart has been thoroughly crushed by what he experienced. He wobbles with his eyes out of focus. The boy is not crying. His mind has shut down.

Would the reaper take pity on the boy? What would be considered pity in this case? Death or life? Is she even here for him or the many dead souls around him? ]
