Do you want to get rid of your companion? Peace to the Vengeful — All you wanted to do was do a kind deed and help them achieve peace, not become eternally grateful. Remember — Both of you are bound and determined to find out who you were as a living mortal. The knowledge might tear you apart. Different Time, Different Place — This ghost is of a person who's a bit...antiquated compared to you. Careful, they may want to court you. It certainly makes things awkward when they see how you dress. Jealousy — Lights burst, glass cracks, and the whole place goes cold when someone with a pulse smiles at you. Protection — You'll risk your afterlife for the one you love. Confession — If you can communicate vocally, confessions are easy. If you can't talk, that's a whole other kettle of fish. The Challenge of Intimacy — Ghost makes it look so easy. You want to reach out and touch them, but you can't always do that. Manifestation — Your emotions have temporarily given you a physical form. Keeping You Here — The living's affection keeps the dead in the mortal coil. Decay — The longer they stay with you, the more of a violent wraith, disconnected from their past, they become. Passing — You have to let them go, even if they don't want to. Just Like Heaven — You'll work together to find a way to bring you back to life. ANYTHING ELSE?

Death isn't such a terrible thing. The fact that it's something rather than nothing had been a bit surprising, but at least death had a bland egalitarian wrap about it. Everyone was simply there, where they had always been, slowly fading toward nothingness as the impressions they had left on the world continued to lapse.

The worst part, to Enjolras's mind, is how painfully unproductive things had to be.

There were moments. The discovery had been entirely accidental, and the rules still were far from clear, but there were moments. Every now and then, his voice seemed to pierce the veil and ring properly in the ears of the people. Every once in a while, his fingers actually catch at the world and the living seem to have an impression of his face.

Enjolras doesn't know if this is one of those moments. His feet move him to stand behind a familiar slumped form all the same, the echo of his fingers drifting lightly over Grantaire's shoulders before he settles into a seat beside their little group's sole survivor.

They can't see her right away. That's one of the rules if they want to see her at all.

Lucy doesn't struggle terribly with having to wait. The years haven't changed her faith in Susan much at all, really, not at the core of things. Susan will be strong. Susan will find her way through the grief to keep forging ahead. The much more difficult thing comes when she stands for the first time on the edge of crossing over and learns that she isn't allowed to actually speak with her sister.

The first few times, she manages to hold herself back. It still helps, after all, to peer carefully through windows and follow a few paces behind. It's still good to just see Susan, spine still defiantly straight and chin still lifted against the weight of the world. The first few times, it's enough.

Then it simply starts to hurt.

She begs for permission out of fear she'll be disallowed from even this much again. She asks and she asks and she feels her heart in her throat every time the Lion blinks slowly at her in consideration.

The first time she's allowed to speak to her sister, Lucy can't be made to wait. She doesn't care that it's far too early in the morning for Susan to be awake. She doesn't care that her brothers have a jumble of half-formed objections to her going at all. She doesn't care that there's an outside chance she'll just be a strange chill against Susan's spine and a half-formed thought in the darkness.

She doesn't have to hold herself back at her sister's bedroom door. Lucy's heart flutters with the joy of that freedom as she pads silently across the floor, climbing weightlessly into the bed to nestle in against Susan's living form, exactly the way she used to when they were still children.

When they were still both alive.
