In the universe of the His Dark Materials trilogy (or the movie The Golden Compass), every person has a creature called a dæmon that accompanies them all their lives, and is emotionally and metaphysically a part of them. Dæmons are often described as sort of external souls (while the part of the personality in a human's body is the spirit).



Basic Dæmon Facts:

- They take the shape of animals
- They can talk, no matter what their shape
- Children's dæmons can change form at will; around puberty they 'settle' and become one animal permanently
- Neither the person or the dæmon chooses the final settled form, but it always reflects their personality (although not necessarily in obvious or simple ways)
- They are almost always the opposite sex as their human
- If a dæmon feels pain, so will their person, and vice versa
- Being physically apart from one's dæmon causes horrible emotional and physical pain
- Dæmons frequently talk to and touch each other, in ways that reflect or complement their persons' interactions, but dæmons talking to humans other than their own is considered strange, and touching humans not their own is extremely taboo; it generally occurs only between long-time lovers. Touching someone else's dæmon without permission is a terrible violation.

How it works:

Just design a dæmon for your muse and put as little or as much information as you like about them (shape, name, link to a picture or species wiki if you are so inclined) in a comment, with your muses's name and series in the subject. Check out other people's dæmons and let your dæmons interact too.

[He's enjoying it until she gets to his ribs and it tickles. He dodges away.] Ah, ah, not there.

Mmm, sorry. [Not really all that sorry. But she does skip his ribs, sliding her hands down his abdomen to start in on the drawstring of his sweatpants.]

No you're not. [And he's not sorry about leaning in to nibble on her neck and shoulder.] Mmmmm.

Not even a little. [Her head falls to the side to give him more room, a sigh escaping parted lips as she pushes on his pants to get them off his hips. He's distracting her.]

[He sees it as enjoying her because he is. He steps out of the sweats and kicks them away.]

[Her legs wrap around his waist again, pulling him in closer, and this time Phil takes the initiative and peels off her cami, leaving her in just her bra. It's fairly plain, all things considered, but it is a lovely shade of blue that makes her skin look even paler.]

You are pretty girl. [Steve licks his lips as he looks at her. How'd he get so lucky?]

[She kisses him again because he just... She has to. That's all.] Been a long time since anyone called me a girl.

Sorry, should I have said woman? [He's still catching up on what slang he can and can't say.]

I don't mind. [She combs her fingers through his hair, smiling at him to assuage his worries.] It's nice.

[He closes his eyes as he leans into her touch. He likes getting pet.] Mmm, that's nice.

[And she likes petting him. He always reacts so well.] You're nice.

Thank you. [He practically melts underneath her attention.]

[She leans in and presses light little kisses all over his face: the tip of his nose, the corner of his eye, the little place where he gets a dimple when he smiles, between his eyebrows, at his hairline.

She is so damn lucky.]

[He catches her lips for a real kiss. The peppering kisses are nice, but he loves a real kiss especially with her.]

[She sighs against his lips, settling in closer and tipping her head a little, submitting to his kiss.]

[He slides his hands to her hips and pulls her right to the edge of the sink, tight against him.]

[She presses herself right up against Steve's chest, humming a little as his hands grip her hips tightly. At this rate, they may never make it into the shower. Phil doesn't care.]

You have more clothes that me. [He brushes his thumb along the waistband of her jeans.]

[She arches her back a little and looks at him through her lashes.] Feel free to try and remedy that.

Yes ma'am. [He is talented enough to undo her fly while he's kissing her. Clever fingers.]

[They are so clever. Phil wiggles a little to help him peel her jeans off her hips, but then she realizes she has to let go of him to take them properly off. Disappointing.]

[oldschoolpatriot]

[Not disappointing because he's a legs man and she has very, very nice legs.] Damn.

[She slides those very nice legs around his waist again and pulls him in closer. She's not uncomfortable with him looking at her, but she always feels vaguely awkward when he just stares. Touching is better.] Flatterer.
