In the universe of the His Dark Materials trilogy (or the movie The Golden Compass), every person has a creature called a dæmon that accompanies them all their lives, and is emotionally and metaphysically a part of them. Dæmons are often described as sort of external souls (while the part of the personality in a human's body is the spirit).



Basic Dæmon Facts:

- They take the shape of animals
- They can talk, no matter what their shape
- Children's dæmons can change form at will; around puberty they 'settle' and become one animal permanently
- Neither the person or the dæmon chooses the final settled form, but it always reflects their personality (although not necessarily in obvious or simple ways)
- They are almost always the opposite sex as their human
- If a dæmon feels pain, so will their person, and vice versa
- Being physically apart from one's dæmon causes horrible emotional and physical pain
- Dæmons frequently talk to and touch each other, in ways that reflect or complement their persons' interactions, but dæmons talking to humans other than their own is considered strange, and touching humans not their own is extremely taboo; it generally occurs only between long-time lovers. Touching someone else's dæmon without permission is a terrible violation.

How it works:

Just design a dæmon for your muse and put as little or as much information as you like about them (shape, name, link to a picture or species wiki if you are so inclined) in a comment, with your muses's name and series in the subject. Check out other people's dæmons and let your dæmons interact too.

The TARDIS was enjoying relaxing in the shade of a tree in Hyde Park. It had been a while since he'd been there, and Nebulae seemed equally delighted for the stop, flitting around his head in erratic circles, lighting now and again on his hair.

Angels don't have daemons; they have a Grace, instead. Sometimes Balthazar is envious; he has an immense weight of light on his mind, always pushing him in the same direction, but humans get a reassuring companion for life.

It doesn't seem fair, but at least he's been able to buy a few daemons. They stay with their humans, but he can call them, and today he has an elegant little dragonfly zipping ahead of him, scouting Dixie's house through the windows. He wants to make sure there's no holy oil waiting before he knocks on the front door. Whoever the dragonfly belongs to may be suffering its absence. Hopefully it will only be temporary.

[Cheshire hadn't settled before the fire tore her mind apart. Alice and her daemon spent the entire of puberty in drooling catatonia at Rutledge, her lying in bed and Cheshire curled up next to her. There were occasional twitches and vague signs of life, a moment's transformation to this or that, but a grey tom was the most common. It surprised no one that he settled as a cat...the horror was what kind of cat he came to be.

A scarred soul means a scarred daemon. Really, they should have known what to expect.

Cheshire is the size of a medium-range dog, with massive paws and a face contorted in a constant grin. His fur is mangy and his frame emaciated, but his voice is an educated drawl that makes him seem constantly amused at whatever is going on before him.]

It can never be said that Stiles is subtle or discreet. Mind you, he thinks if you go walking around with a dæmon like that, you should be used to exclamations of shock, because it's a pretty shocking looking creature there.

Tshilaba is inclined to agree, the daring mongoose racing down her human's body and straight up to the 'cat', darting around and probably too close in her curiousity.

"Of course, what I meant was 'Hello', that is a very unusual dæmon you have there," Stiles says after another long moment of staring.

And what better daemon for a Brooklyn Newsie than a wharf rat that had been named 'Fang' as long as he could remember. Alice's fingers twist in what mangy fur remains on his head, trying to make him keep quiet. He acts as if it's a mere caress and mockingly purrs at her.

[Hisoka had wondered what his dæmon would be like. He pictured a fierce wolf ready to tear out Muraki's throat, or a lion large enough to protect Tsuzuki. But no.

It was. a hedgehog. The universe was officially laughing at him. Hisoka still tried to keep an open mind, so he helped her up on the table so he could keep an eye on her while he read.]

The ragged-eared bobcat pads along beside Badd, her nose to the ground. Age hasn't dimmed her senses, just as Badd's reflexives remain strong as ever. In their decades on the force they've become keenly tuned to each others' actions. Today they're not technically on duty, but a local man had his car jacked and the trail is easily picked up. Idiot didn't go very far.

They pass by the pub and Suavis goes to give the door a good smelling. There's smoke and chip-grease everywhere, and it's hard to pick out the right scent. Badd waits with his hands in his pockets, eying the German Shepard outside.

[Malcolm is enjoying time on shore leave, away from the ship, fresh air, stretching his legs, Izzati trotting alertly by his side down the street, the Belgian Groenendael making sure to keep a sharp eye on anyone that passes by. She seems to be slightly less enjoying herself, but then again, it's always difficult to tell with those two.]

Today they're both dressed cozily in big knit sweaters as they walk through the Park, Phil warming her hands on a latte, looking for Steve and Lydia. They can usually be found around here at this time of day.]

Arthur was at another table in the cafe, busy trying to read a chapter in his new book while Agatha, having decided to lay on the table since they had it to themselves, was apparently playing a game of sorts with the rabbit demon at the other table. The fox daemon was sticking her tongue out every time she saw the other daemon peeking over at her, feeling more playful while Arthur was in a rather content mood.

Badd and Suavis are out doing their goshdarn jobs, because someone has to around here. The bobcat has as many scars as her partner, marked by cut ears and little patches of missing fur. Criminal daemons fight back just as hard as criminal humans.

If there's a corpse or a crime, both of them have their nose in it.

When he was younger, his dæmon fluttered between a whole host of forms. When she began to settle down, a he'd hoped she'd end up as something sedate, not too flashy and save for an embarrassing couple days as a lioness, his hopes looked as if they were going to be born out.

However, the war rolled on and on and Harry will be the first to admit that sort of thing can change a man. Now, Esteri has finally, properly settled and while he still loves her and always will, he's not looking forward to explaining this to the others.

The voice is coming from above, and should Harry look up, he'll see a lion's head staring down at him from a rooftop. She - she is a she, despite the full mane and her size - blinks at him without saying anything and then disappears when she pulls away.

She's replaced a second later by Wolfgang's considerably smaller but equally as impressively maned head. He looks sheepish. "Um, hi."

Why is he on the roof? Who knows. But his slightly embarrassed expression may suggest that he can't get back down.

Arthur was taking notes on their mark, it wasn't often that he had to do legwork like this, but this was supposed to be an easy job, and all he had to do was wait at the cafe and watch. His harris' hawk, Emmylou was perched on the back of his chair, her back to him so that she could watch his back, not that he really needed it.

Aja was humming to herself, standing on a stepladder, halfway into the engine compartment of her Sopwith camel. Pavel, a Moorish gecko clinging to the underside of the open compartment panel, just watching her work for the time being.

Carter's standing below the ladder, with his tiny dik-dik daemon in his arms. Peytah's halfway to a nap and so is Carter, but interesting things are happening now. He doesn't see a lot of lady pilots around.

So here is a tapir in a sweater. Doing paperwork, because it goes much faster when they do it together and telekinetically manipulated pencils make an adequate replacement for thumbs.

Clint was down at the range this morning, bright and early the same as he usually was. And Annie the fruit bat, was clinging to the back of his jacket as she usually did, yawning hugely now and again even though she was dozing.

Arthur, since he wasn't on call, was spending the morning in bed, sprawled out along the mattress long after Clint had left earlier that morning.

He was used to it by now: both he and Agatha eventually leaving the bedroom to either consume coffee while Clint cooked breakfast or, if they were up before he got back, they would attempt to cook (and most of the time, they got the eggs right - although the bacon tended to be an exercise in frustration).
