THE ALPHA/BETA/OMEGA MEME

In our world, sexual roles are commonly defined by genders -- male or female or other, by sexualities -- gay or straight, bi or asexual or in-between. But what if they were defined by something else entirely?

Alpha/Beta/Omegaverse is a fusion of fanfiction tropes and animalistic behavior. In this world, sexual roles are divided into three categories: the Alphas (the dominant, the protective and the aggressive), the Betas (ordinary humans) and the Omegas (submissive, fertile and able to carry children).

ROLES:
1 - The Alpha.
* Stereotypically type A personalities.
* Anatomically: Males have a penis; females may have a penis in addition to a vagina.
* Alphas knot their mates, meaning that the base of the penis swells and locks them inside their mate while they produce copious amounts of semen in an effort to breed.
* Strong sense of smell.
* Near an Omega in heat, they experience a compulsion to mate that is almost impossible to overcome.
* Alphas may go into rut, which is their equivalent of Omega heat, and drives them to mate.

2 - The Beta.
* Ordinary human being.
* Males have penises; females have vaginas.
* Can mate to anyone.
* Might be able to smell hormones of Omegas and Alphas, but will not be overwhelmingly affected by them.

3 - The Omega.
* Stereotypically submissive, quiet, intelligent and less physically able.
* Female anatomy is similar to Betas; males are self-lubricating and may have either an external or internal vaginal setup.
* Regularly go into heat, which involves being overcome by the urge to mate. They are unable to consent while in heat.
* May be made compliant by a bite to the neck. However, that may also induce a mating bond.
* Often regarded as second-class citizens or prizes to be won.

SITUATIONS:
1 - Bonding - Love at first sight. You've spotted your soulmate. You can smell them, you can feel them, you know that they'll be with you until the end of your days. Unless there's something between the two of you. It could be age - maybe one of you has to wait until the other has reached maturity. It could be that the bond is one-sided, and the other has yet to fall in love. It could be an unwanted bond, or society could have divided you into different places. Is your love strong enough to conquer?

2 - Heat/Rut - The need is coming on you strong. Everyone for a half-mile around can smell it. Better find someone to ride it out with, or hole yourself up in a room with a few bottles of water and a durable sex toy. And you'd better hope that there isn't someone out there who will take advantage of your pliable state. Best case scenario, there might be a Beta who can take care of you, or fend off anyone too predatory.

3 - Pregnancy - Whether through a heat or not, you're pregnant. Congratulations - or condolences. Is it time to start a family, or time to start panicking?

4 - Suppressants - You're using suppressants to keep yourself on an even hormone cycle, skipping heats, or maybe pretending to pass as a different class of society. After all, Omegas might want to be in the military, where they're not usually allowed - or an Alpha might want to take a job in a university or as a nurse. Shouldn't they be allowed to, if their hormones are suppressed? Just hope that you don't miss a dose.

5 - Mistaken Identity - That friend that you always thought was an Alpha, or an Omega, or a neutral Beta, turns out to be something entirely different, and your world is turned absolutely upside down. Does it challenge your preconceptions? Or does it just ruin the balance between you two?

6 - Unlikely Pairs - After all, there's no actual reason that Alphas have to mate with Omegas. Maybe two Omegas can satisfy each other. Or two Alphas. Or your intended mate could easily be a Beta. Maybe this is just about breaking out of your pre-established role and becoming something new.

7 - Manifestation - In some cases, an individual may not know they are Omega, Beta or Alpha until their first heat/rut/manifestation, usually happening in early teen years. It may take you by surprise; it may be a blessing, or may be a deep disappointment.

8 - Other - Adventures in getting jobs, making families, fighting bad guys, and anything else you can come up with!

[Fudou was an omega since he gained his human form. It was omega and betas in tantous was pretty normal. There were a few tantous who broke that rule, however. In Fudou's 200 years of having a human form, Kirishima was his first human alpha. The emotional scars he had before made it impossible for him to bond before.

But he didn't drink to cope anymore and had received the closure he needed and recovered enough to be assigned to a ten year old Kirishima. It was amazing how many years have gone by. It seemed like Fudou had only blinked and now the small boy who always got tangled in his hair was now almost taller than him. Though, he still got tangled in his hair every now and then.

Fudou turned his head from his book to look at the forlorn Kirishima.]

Hm, I guess so? But usually 'mega' alphas isn't something that gets mistaken. It's very rare after all! [He reminds him, Fudou didn't want Kirishima to think that he was a beta only to run into his first manifestation of being an Alpha and harming someone by mistake.]

But being an alpha isn't so bad, you'll be respected by others, hired first for the best positions. It's a lot better than being an omega. [Omegas often struggled to lead normal lives because of their heat cycle. Some jobs wouldn't even look at an omega as a possible employee.]

Does being an Alpha bother you?

No! Not at all! I mean... Maybe? [Staring at Fudou because he can't just spring a question like that on him Kirishima raised his hands to start gesturing and promptly slid off his human armrest in the process. Rolling around on the floor so that he could look up and meet the other's eyes Kirishima groaned.]

It's not like I hate it or anything. It's just...

[Looking to the side he pulled a face and kicked his leg. He had been restless for a while now, the spells having come and gone the last two weeks where he would be left feeling twitching with energy that itched to get out somehow but also in an 'off' mood because nothing he did could actually help elevate the itch. It was like he wanted something except that Kirishima didn't know what he wanted and now he was stuck trying to figure it out by trying and growing dissatisfied within minutes with everything he could think of.

Still, Fudou brought up some very good points and Kirishima felt bad complaining about how everybody already looked at him as an alpha when others had to deal with way worse.]

...Sorry. It's just- I've been waiting and waiting and people just keep like- like expecting things from me, as if me being an alpha suddenly would make me a good leader or smart or something! I'm worried of letting everybody down-!

[Or worse, what if he manifested something different than alpha after all? Would they force him to stop meeting with Fudou?!]

[Fudou sets his book down, turning himself around to face Kirishima as he stumbled with his words. Fudou didn't know what it was like to be an alpha, but he did know what it was like to worry that he wouldn't be able to do what was expected or meet the expectations of others.

He reached out to lightly pet Kirishima's head, an atempt to soothe away all of his worries and anxieties. To Fudou, Kirishima was perfect.

He may not have manifested yet or may never manifest. But Fudou loved him the way he was, he enjoyed all the time they spent together and was proud to see how he grew up so much in the past years.]

You don't have to be anything like what they want. I've met plenty of Alphas who aren't anything like that! [He's also met omegas who were exactly like that.]

You don't have to be like every other Alpha out there... You're fine the way you are.

[Kirishima leaned into the touch without thinking about it, relaxing for a moment before he rolled around once more with a huff. Usually he shamelessly indulges in the times Fudou is showing him his more nurturing side, but right now not even this didn't feel properly right.

Shouldn't he be the one whose presence was calming and reassuring?

He quickly shook the thought off and even managed to flash Fudou a grateful heartfelt smile but his scent kept leaking restlessness.]

Thanks! I'm really lucky to have a partner like you! ...but it's more about what if I want to actually live up to their expectations and still can't? I'm confident in being who I am 'cause everything else wouldn't be manly, but what if I get an omega and I fail to protect them? You know what I mean, right?

[He felt bad poking at Fudou's past but at the same time he really wanted to know the other's thoughts on such a hypothetical situation.]

[Fudou was beginning to pick up on his scent, he lightly brushed his hair from his face. Not surprised by Kirishima's worries.

However, the lighthearted smile faded when Kirishima asked him, he did. He knew what it was like to lose someone you loved dearly...]

I know what it's like to fail to protect someone you love... But when it's someone you love, you'll cut down mountains and cross oceans for them...

[The wounds may have healed, but all the scars remain. He pauses for a moment before deciding to disclose something he was supposed to hide.]

I haven't had an Alpha in since I obtained a human form because of loss... But if there's one thing I know, you'll be a great Alpha and your omega will love you.

Hmn~ [The young alpha agreed without words, knowing what Fudou meant. It was a feeling, a very manly one at that. You'd do the impossible for those you care about.]

Sorry I asked you. Was it difficult to switch into being human and having to deal with this whole alpha, beta, omega thing?

[It's a bad attempt of changing the topic of their conversation away from where he suspected that bad memories were buried. Kirishima's scent oozed out soothing and a tad bit apologetic that he asked, but also proud and confident in Fudou's strength for being able to talk this freely about it.]

[The scent brought him comfort but it also made his mind muddled and distracted. Fudou was growing anxious, waiting...expecting something to happen soon.

But he was still able to gather his thoughts and nodded his head.]

Yeah, it was only until I met you that dealing with Alphas became easier. Until then, the only Alpha I regularly interacted with was Yagen. [Another tantou, one that shared his past and cared for him very deeply. Even when he was at his lowest points and was hard to be around. Fudou would be lying if he said it wasn't hard to say goodbye to him when he was assigned Kirishima.

But he loved and cared for Kirishima very deeply.]

[Without meaning to his lips pulled into a slight growl, barely more than a breath of discontent at the mention of another alpha. Wait, no, a potential other alpha, the heat that was rising at the back of his neck made it hard to concentrate. Kirishima flopped around and tried hard to ignore it.]

Must be tough. Being expected to just accept and deal with whoever you're getting teamed up with...

[Shooting a look over his shoulder he grinned impishly.]

....That makes you super manly-strong! You've got to deal with all of this and yet you're not complaining and being the best omega-friend I could have ever asked for! Thanks again, Fudou!!

We usually get to pick our omegas and alphas, but I remember you were just a small child hiding behind his mother's skirt. And when our eyes locked, you ran over to me, took my hand in your tiny child hands and said 'Mama! I found my princess!'

Even as a kid you were still cheeky! [The other swords still have yet to let Fudou live that down. But Kirishima was so earnest and excited to meet him, that Fudou couldn't possibly say no when he was selected.]

[Fudou caught the fleeting look on Kirishima's face when he mentioned Yagen. A little surprised by it as he had mentioned him before and Kirishima seemed okay.

But puberty does that. Kirishima is a young alpha after all, it's only natural that he'd reach the age where the title 'alpha' meant much more than just a word.]

Haha, I'm not that great! I'm happy that I get to watch you grow into a great young man.
