THE ALPHA/BETA/OMEGA MEME

In our world, sexual roles are commonly defined by genders -- male or female or other, by sexualities -- gay or straight, bi or asexual or in-between. But what if they were defined by something else entirely?

Alpha/Beta/Omegaverse is a fusion of fanfiction tropes and animalistic behavior. In this world, sexual roles are divided into three categories: the Alphas (the dominant, the protective and the aggressive), the Betas (ordinary humans) and the Omegas (submissive, fertile and able to carry children).

ROLES:
1 - The Alpha.
* Stereotypically type A personalities.
* Anatomically: Males have a penis; females may have a penis in addition to a vagina.
* Alphas knot their mates, meaning that the base of the penis swells and locks them inside their mate while they produce copious amounts of semen in an effort to breed.
* Strong sense of smell.
* Near an Omega in heat, they experience a compulsion to mate that is almost impossible to overcome.
* Alphas may go into rut, which is their equivalent of Omega heat, and drives them to mate.

2 - The Beta.
* Ordinary human being.
* Males have penises; females have vaginas.
* Can mate to anyone.
* Might be able to smell hormones of Omegas and Alphas, but will not be overwhelmingly affected by them.

3 - The Omega.
* Stereotypically submissive, quiet, intelligent and less physically able.
* Female anatomy is similar to Betas; males are self-lubricating and may have either an external or internal vaginal setup.
* Regularly go into heat, which involves being overcome by the urge to mate. They are unable to consent while in heat.
* May be made compliant by a bite to the neck. However, that may also induce a mating bond.
* Often regarded as second-class citizens or prizes to be won.

SITUATIONS:
1 - Bonding - Love at first sight. You've spotted your soulmate. You can smell them, you can feel them, you know that they'll be with you until the end of your days. Unless there's something between the two of you. It could be age - maybe one of you has to wait until the other has reached maturity. It could be that the bond is one-sided, and the other has yet to fall in love. It could be an unwanted bond, or society could have divided you into different places. Is your love strong enough to conquer?

2 - Heat/Rut - The need is coming on you strong. Everyone for a half-mile around can smell it. Better find someone to ride it out with, or hole yourself up in a room with a few bottles of water and a durable sex toy. And you'd better hope that there isn't someone out there who will take advantage of your pliable state. Best case scenario, there might be a Beta who can take care of you, or fend off anyone too predatory.

3 - Pregnancy - Whether through a heat or not, you're pregnant. Congratulations - or condolences. Is it time to start a family, or time to start panicking?

4 - Suppressants - You're using suppressants to keep yourself on an even hormone cycle, skipping heats, or maybe pretending to pass as a different class of society. After all, Omegas might want to be in the military, where they're not usually allowed - or an Alpha might want to take a job in a university or as a nurse. Shouldn't they be allowed to, if their hormones are suppressed? Just hope that you don't miss a dose.

5 - Mistaken Identity - That friend that you always thought was an Alpha, or an Omega, or a neutral Beta, turns out to be something entirely different, and your world is turned absolutely upside down. Does it challenge your preconceptions? Or does it just ruin the balance between you two?

6 - Unlikely Pairs - After all, there's no actual reason that Alphas have to mate with Omegas. Maybe two Omegas can satisfy each other. Or two Alphas. Or your intended mate could easily be a Beta. Maybe this is just about breaking out of your pre-established role and becoming something new.

7 - Manifestation - In some cases, an individual may not know they are Omega, Beta or Alpha until their first heat/rut/manifestation, usually happening in early teen years. It may take you by surprise; it may be a blessing, or may be a deep disappointment.

8 - Other - Adventures in getting jobs, making families, fighting bad guys, and anything else you can come up with!

After multiple refills his posture relaxes and his tongue loosens. He jokes the way he did before he left for Hogarth's firm and when the subject of Matt's abilities comes up his smile doesn't fade.]

[ He'd done his damnedest to keep his distance, ever since she first came barging into his life. Wasn't the time or place to be getting invested, and never mind that she felt...different. Smelled different, whatever the hell it was. His head was still too turned around to do anything but bury it down and ignore it, focus set too deeply on the past.

But their paths kept crossing. Convinced him to take on her bosses as legal council. Managed to track him down once he broke out, insistent on staying involved even when he pushed her away. But there was still something, itching under his skin. Tugging.

Keep her safe. He barely knew her, but the feeling was there all the same. Got stronger the more she stuck around instead of fading like he'd expected.

It wasn't enough to stop his path. Didn't keep him from going too far, from creating a rift through his actions because he was too stubborn and too angry not to finish what he'd started. But he hadn't forgotten, even if she hadn't been enough of a reason to step back from the edge then.

He followed the rest of it to the end, pulled on the thread that ripped his life apart until there was nothing left to follow, until the threads put pressure back in turn and brought a little perspective. She still came back, even when he wouldn't have blamed her for staying away, even when he continued to tell her to stay away in order to keep her safe, keep her out of the shit he was wading in, until protesting became more of an exercise in empty words rather than sincerity, and even that weighed a little heavier. A little harder to keep distance, even if he continued to dig his heels in because he'd spent so long at it that it was reflex at this point. Harder to push her away.

Eventually, he got the hint, somewhere in between getting wrapped up in somebody else's shit and another mission he told her not to get herself tangled up in (not that it helped). A few too many close calls, and a trip almost to death's door, and he Got It. Focus on the living. Live in the now instead of what's behind.

Don't fucking ignore the shit staring you in the face because it's not going to be there forever.

So he tracked her down this time instead of waiting. Pounded on the door of her apartment, one eye on the hallway just in case, and waited. ]

[ Frank had taken Penny as his mate the second she manifested. Part of it was undeniable chemistry. The other part of it was the fact that he really didn't want anyone else taking her as a mate. He wasn't entirely sure they'd treat her right. Sometimes he thought she should have been with someone closer to her own age, but they were in too deep now. He might only release her if she asked.

When she was in heat he was pretty quick to shut them both off from the world. He never let her get dressed, and helped her through it. Though his intentions were far from altruistic and she knew it. She had to know it by the way he took advantage at every opportunity.

Just like now.

He'd already "helped" her four times, and he was still looking at her like he was ready for a fifth time as soon as she was. In fact there was no question about it with how hard he was and how dark his pupils were. Her scent drove him crazy, it always did. Getting enough was never a thought that occurred to him.

He slid his hand over her stomach, caressing it before he nudged her onto her side so that he could pulled her back against his body. His hand shifted upwards to cup her breast as he nuzzled in against her neck and started to nip and suck at the flesh. ]

[ Stella tried to be subtle. She really did, but there were days when it wasn't so easy. When she looked at Nate and it was a miracle that she focused on briefings, or managed entire sentences about things other than what she'd rather being doing to and with him.

She was still eyeing him from across the table as her jaw clenched and then finally she started to chew on her thumbnail when she thought she really wasn't going to last any longer. When sitting still was mostly definitely not working for her. He knew. He had to know.

The second the meeting was over, Stella tilted her head in the direction of her quarters. Just in case Nate really hadn't figured it out by now. She covered ground quickly, her strides barely contained to a walk and not a run. Nate had followed, and the second he was through the door she kicked it shut behind him as she pulled him into a kiss and walked him back towards the nearest surface. ]

It was tough. Thor was dripping sweat and in the smallest pair of shorts he could find in Wakanda, it seemed. He was working out like some sort of monster to try and burn off the energy that kept him imprisoned only a few times a year. In a land so new to him, Thor could find a beta or an omega with the change of the wind.

The wind!

The country was so advanced that they had no air pollution, no gases hiding the scents of hundreds - if not thousands, he hadn't done an actual count - of those capable of breeding with him, of wanting to. It was like being locked in a box with all the food in the world, but too hungry to choose.

So instead, Thor was running through the trees, hoping to burn off his energy or find one of the famous rhinoceroses who was just as horny as he was. They'd fight to the death and Thor knew he'd eat out its heart.

Suddenly, the land inclined and shortly after Thor found himself on a small cliff. The waterfall in front of him looked angry. The blue water churned white by the rapids at its top, wisps peeling off as the water fell down over the smoothed rocks.

Backing up, Thor ran at full speed, his feet leaving the ground at the last instant. He sailed outward, weightless for several seconds. He felt peace for a split second before he was diving, body stretching, arms and legs crossing, and the water consumed him.
